καταλαβαίνω (to understand)

Morphologically this verb asks little of you: καταλαβαίνω is a nasal stem, so the -αιν- drops and καταλάβ- underneath is the perfective stem — the whole family is laid out on nasal-stem verbs. In the past, stress retracts within the compound to give κα-τά-λα-βα; the internal-augment page contrasts that movement with forms such as υπέγραψα, which actually insert ε. What earns καταλαβαίνω a card of its own is that one of its forms has become a conversational move.

Κατάλαβα is something you say

Standing alone after someone has explained something, Κατάλαβα. commonly means "I see", "got it", "right" — an acknowledgement that the message has landed, and one of the handful of one-word replies that hold a Greek conversation together, alongside Εντάξει and Σωστά. In another context it can still report a past realization; the conversational setting supplies the reading. It belongs with the other backchannels as much as with the aorist.

Κατάλαβα, δεν χρειάζεται να μου το εξηγήσεις άλλο.

katálava, dhen chriázete na mu to eksiyísis álo

Right, got it — you don't need to explain any further.

The negative pair below illustrates an aspect contrast with strong conversational defaults. Both are correct; the surrounding request makes the intended reading clear:

Δεν καταλαβαίνω, μπορείς να μου το πεις πιο απλά;

dhen katalavéno, borís na mu to pis pio aplá;

I'm not following — can you put it more simply? (the explanation isn't working)

Δεν κατάλαβα, μου το λες άλλη μια φορά;

dhen katálava, mu to les áli mia forá;

Sorry, I missed that — can you say it again? (I just didn't catch it)

💡
Δεν καταλαβαίνω presents the difficulty as current or ongoing, so it often asks for a clearer explanation. Δεν κατάλαβα packages one past occasion, so after a missed utterance it often asks for a repeat — but it can also mean that the content made no sense. Context decides whether the useful response is louder or simpler.

  • accusative
Καταλαβαίνει από μηχανές.know about, be a judge of

The από frame is the one with no English shape behind it: καταλαβαίνω από κάτι is not "understand from something" but "know about something, be able to judge it" — the register of an expert or of a wine drinker, and in the negative it turns into a character judgement.

Ο θείος μου καταλαβαίνει από μηχανές, ρώτησέ τον.

o thíos mu katalavéni apó michanés, rótisé ton

My uncle knows about engines — ask him.

Μην τον πειράζεις, δεν καταλαβαίνει από αστεία.

min ton pirázis, dhen katalavéni apó astía

Don't wind him up — he can't take a joke.

Κατάλαβα τι εννοείς, αλλά δεν συμφωνώ καθόλου.

katálava ti enoís, alá dhen simfonó kathólu

I see what you mean, but I don't agree at all.

κατάλαβα is not κατέλαβα

The two are one vowel apart because they are the same ancient verb, split in two. καταλαβαίνω is the demotic descendant of ancient καταλαμβάνω, rebuilt on that verb's own aorist stem καταλαβ- plus -αίνω, on the model of λαμβάνω → λαβαίνω. The learned καταλαμβάνω (formal) then stayed in the language alongside it and kept the physical sense — "seize, occupy, take over" — with the aorist κατέλαβα, common in news writing. Same root, divided labour: read the two as one verb and you get sentences about protesters who understood a ministry.

Οι διαδηλωτές κατέλαβαν το κτίριο του υπουργείου.

i dhiadhilotés katélavan to ktírio tu ipuryíu

The demonstrators occupied the ministry building. (formal)

Common Mistakes

Using για where the frame wants από. For knowing about a subject, καταλαβαίνω selects από, not the για you would expect from English about.

❌ Ο πατέρας μου καταλαβαίνει πολύ για κρασιά.

Incorrect — the frame is καταλαβαίνω από: καταλαβαίνει πολύ από κρασιά.

✅ Ο πατέρας μου καταλαβαίνει πολύ από κρασιά, θα διαλέξει αυτός.

o patéras mu katalavéni polí apó krasiá, tha dhialéksi aftós

My father knows a lot about wine — let him choose.

Key Takeaways

  • The whole verb: καταλαβαίνω · καταλάβαινα · κατάλαβα · να καταλάβω · κατάλαβε · έχω καταλάβει · καταλαβαίνοντας.
  • The neutral current aorist has no σ and no front augment: κατάλαβα, with καταλάβαμε in the plural. Older literary Greek also attests εκατάλαβα.
  • In an explanatory exchange, Κατάλαβα. commonly works as the reply "I see, got it"; elsewhere it can report a past realization.
  • Δεν καταλαβαίνω usually presents an ongoing problem; Δεν κατάλαβα presents one past failure to understand. Context decides whether the speaker wants a rephrasing or a repeat.
  • The "know about, be a judge of" frame is καταλαβαίνω από, not για: καταλαβαίνει από μηχανές.
  • There is no -μένος participle; "understood, clear" is the adjective κατανοητός. The mediopassive exists only in the plural, and means "understand each other": δεν καταλαβαινόμαστε.
  • κατάλαβα (understood) and κατέλαβα (seized) are the demotic and the learned half of one ancient verb — one vowel apart, and not interchangeable.

  • ξέρω (to know)A2 — ξέρω has a present stem and the imperfect ήξερα, but no perfective stem. This card maps its inflectional gaps and the verbs that fill them: μαθαίνω for 'find out', γνωρίζω for meeting or acquaintance and for formal-leaning informational 'know'.

Drop it and the bare root underneath is the perfective stem (μάθ-, καταλάβ-, μπ-, πι-).
