Dialogue: Making Plans

Eleni and Sofia are friends, so they use familiar singular forms such as κάνεις, σε βολεύει, στείλε μου. Their exchange moves from an open suggestion to a settled plan. Greek marks each conversational move with a different frame: consultative να, accommodating ας, decisive bare first-person plural, and future θα.

The complete exchange

Eleni

Τι κάνεις αύριο το βράδυ; Έχεις κανονίσει κάτι;

ti kánis ávrio to vrádhi; échis kanonísi káti;

What are you doing tomorrow evening? Have you arranged anything?

Sofia

Δεν έχω κανονίσει τίποτα. Να πάμε σινεμά;

dhen écho kanonísi típota. na páme sinemá;

I haven't arranged anything. Shall we go to the cinema?

Eleni

Καλή ιδέα! Παίζει μια καινούρια ταινία στο κέντρο.

kalí idhéa! pézi mia kenúria tenía sto kéndro

Good idea! There's a new film showing downtown.

Sofia

Να κλείσω εγώ τα εισιτήρια απόψε;

na klíso eghó ta isitíria apópse;

Shall I book the tickets tonight?

Eleni

Ναι, κλείσ' τα εσύ. Ας φάμε πρώτα κάπου κοντά.

ne, klís' ta esí. as fáme próta kápu kondá

Yes, you book them. Let's eat somewhere nearby first.

Sofia

Πάμε στο μικρό μεζεδοπωλείο πίσω από το σινεμά!

páme sto mikró mezedhopolío píso apó to sinemá!

Let's go to the little meze restaurant behind the cinema!

Eleni

Τέλεια. Στις οκτώ σε βολεύει;

télia. stis októ se volévi;

Perfect. Does eight o'clock suit you?

Sofia

Ναι. Θα σε πάρω τηλέφωνο μόλις φύγω από το σπίτι.

ne. tha se páro tiléfono mólis fígho apó to spíti

Yes. I'll call you as soon as I leave home.

Eleni

Ωραία. Στείλε μου και τη διεύθυνση του μαγαζιού.

oréa. stíle mu ke ti dhiéfthinsi tu maghaziú

Great. Send me the restaurant's address too.

Sofia

Έγινε. Τα λέμε αύριο στις οκτώ!

éyine. ta léme ávrio stis októ!

Done. See you tomorrow at eight!

Να proposes and asks for a decision

Να πάμε σινεμά; is a first-person-plural deliberative: Sofia floats a joint action and asks Eleni to approve it. Να κλείσω εγώ...; is first-person singular and offers to perform one part of the plan.

Να συναντηθούμε έξω από τον σταθμό στις επτάμισι;

na sinandithúme ékso apó ton stathmó stis eftámisi;

Shall we meet outside the station at half past seven?

These are not shortened futures. A deliberative να-question hands the choice to the listener and normally uses the Greek polar rise–fall contour. Θα πάμε; would instead ask whether a future trip is expected to happen.

Bare πάμε moves the group

Once the friends agree to eat first, Sofia says Πάμε στο μικρό μεζεδοπωλείο! The bare first-person plural presents the group as moving toward that choice. With question intonation, bare Πάμε; can consult; here the exclamation and the already-shared plan make it decisive.

Compare the three forms without turning them into a rigid politeness ladder:

Να φάμε πρώτα;

na fáme próta;

Shall we eat first? (consultative proposal)

Ας φάμε πρώτα, αφού η ταινία αρχίζει αργά.

as fáme próta, afú i tenía archízi arghá

Let's eat first, since the film starts late. (accommodating proposal)

Τρώμε πρώτα και μετά πάμε σινεμά!

tróme próta ke metá páme sinemá!

Let's eat first and then go to the cinema! (decisive plan)

Να asks the group to decide, ας readily suggests or accommodates, and the bare plural mobilizes the group. Tone and context can adjust all three. The fuller social ranking belongs to offers and suggestions.

Ας and aspect

Ας φάμε uses ας + perfective first plural to package the proposed meal as one bounded part of the evening. An imperfective form would be possible under an internal or open construal:

Ας τρώμε νωρίτερα όσο δουλεύουμε πρωινή βάρδια.

as tróme norítera óso dhulévume proiní várdhia

Let's eat earlier while we're working the morning shift. (open arrangement)

The contrast is bounded versus internal/open viewpoint, never mechanically “once versus repeated.”

Θα establishes a future arrangement

Θα σε πάρω τηλέφωνο no longer asks permission; it announces Sofia's settled plan. Perfective πάρω packages the call as a bounded future action. The time clause μόλις φύγω uses a dependent perfective form without θα because μόλις already subordinates the future event.

Θα σου στείλω μήνυμα όταν φτάσω στον σταθμό.

tha su stílo mínima ótan ftáso ston stathmó

I'll send you a message when I reach the station.

Greek can also license όταν θα when the subordinate clause is explicitly viewed from a future standpoint, but the compact prospective sequence here needs no second θα.

Time phrases

Αύριο το βράδυ uses the bare accusative for a time period. Clock time uses στις + numeral: στις οκτώ, στις επτάμισι. Απόψε means “tonight,” relative to the day of speaking.

Η προβολή αρχίζει αύριο στις εννιά και τέταρτο.

i provolí archízi ávrio stis eniá ke tétarto

The screening starts tomorrow at quarter past nine.

Three clitic positions in one plan

The dialogue gives three environments:

  • after a particle, before the verb: θα σε πάρω;
  • after a positive imperative: κλείσ' τα, στείλε μου;
  • with two roles, the genitive recipient precedes an accusative thing before a finite verb: θα σου τη στείλω.

Μόλις βρω τη διεύθυνση, θα σου τη στείλω.

mólis vro ti dhiéfthinsi, tha su ti stílo

As soon as I find the address, I'll send it to you.

In κλείσ' τα, the elided imperative and clitic remain two words in writing; the apostrophe marks the dropped final vowel of κλείσε.

Agreement formulas

Καλή ιδέα! evaluates the suggestion positively. Τέλεια and Ωραία confirm successive details, while Έγινε accepts the final arrangement: “done/agreed.” These responses advance the negotiation rather than repeating a bare ναι at every turn.

Common Mistakes

Putting a clitic before θα

In the neutral Standard particle frame, θα precedes the clitic and the finite verb.

✅ Θα σε πάρω τηλέφωνο μόλις τελειώσει η δουλειά.

tha se páro tiléfono mólis teliósi i dhuliá

I'll call you as soon as work finishes.

Stacking ας and να

Neutral Standard Greek selects one particle in this slot: ας φάμε makes the hortative proposal directly.

✅ Ας φάμε πριν από την απογευματινή παράσταση.

as fáme prin apó tin apoyevmatiní parástasi

Let's eat before the afternoon performance.

Putting a clitic before a positive imperative

This dialogue models neutral Standard enclisis: the positive imperative precedes its clitic, στείλε μου. Regional systems can place clitics differently and are not being marked impossible here.

✅ Στείλε μου την ακριβή ώρα της προβολής.

stíle mu tin akriví óra tis provolís

Send me the exact time of the screening.

Key Takeaways

  • Να πάμε; seeks agreement; να κλείσω; offers to act.
  • Ας φάμε proposes or accommodates; a bare plural such as πάμε! moves the group decisively.
  • Aspect remains viewpoint: bounded ας φάμε versus internal/open ας τρώμε.
  • Θα σε πάρω announces a future arrangement rather than asking for a decision.
  • Use στις + time, but bare αύριο το βράδυ/απόψε.
  • Keep clitics after θα/να, before finite verbs, and after positive imperatives.

  • Deliberative Questions With ναB1 — να + subjunctive with question intonation asks what one should or shall do — Να πάω; (Should I go?), Τι να κάνω; (What should I do?), Να σου φέρω κάτι; (Shall I bring you something?) — the everyday Greek for English 'should I / shall I', with no θα and no auxiliary.
  • Offers and SuggestionsA2 — Offer help and propose shared action with deliberative να, μήπως, θέλεις, τι λες, bare plural forms, and hortative ας.
