Verb + Noun Collocations

Greek verb–noun collocations often package an ordinary action with a broad verb such as κάνω, δίνω, παίρνω, βάζω, βγάζω, or ρίχνω. The noun identifies the event; the verb is its conventional partner. English chooses different partners surprisingly often, so learn παίρνω απόφαση as “make a decision,” not as two words to assemble during conversation.

This page is a learner-facing reference. The structural explanation belongs to Light Verbs, while the κάνω reference, δίνω reference, παίρνω reference, and βάζω reference give each verb's wider range.

Articles and number vary with meaning: κάνω λάθος / κάνω ένα σοβαρό λάθος, δίνω εξετάσεις / δίνω μία εξέταση, παίρνω μια δύσκολη απόφαση. Preserve the verb–noun partnership while adapting the noun phrase.

Κάνω: activities and everyday states

With these nouns, κάνω organizes an activity without necessarily meaning literal “make.” Κάνω μπάνιο is broader than English have a bath: depending on setting, it can mean bathe, wash, or swim in the sea. Κάνω παρέα may be reciprocal, or it may take με for the people involved.

Θα κάνω ένα γρήγορο ντους και μετά φεύγουμε.

tha káno éna ghríghoro dus ke metá févghume.

I'll take a quick shower, and then we'll leave.

Τα παιδιά κάνουν μπάνιο στη θάλασσα από το πρωί.

Κάναμε παρέα στο πανεπιστήμιο, αλλά τώρα μένουμε σε διαφορετικές πόλεις.

káname paréa sto panepistímio, alá tóra ménume se dhiaforetikés pólis.

We used to hang out at university, but now we live in different cities.

Έκανα λάθος στη διεύθυνση και το δέμα γύρισε πίσω.

ékana láthos sti dhiéfthinsi ke to dhéma yírise píso.

I made a mistake in the address, and the parcel was returned.

The dedicated κάνω expressions page owns other meanings in that family rather than restocking this list.

Δίνω and παίρνω: viewpoint matters

The candidate δίνει εξετάσεις. A journalist normally παίρνει συνέντευξη από someone, while the interviewee δίνει συνέντευξη. These are not contradictory: the two verbs select opposite roles in the same event.

Ο υποψήφιος δίνει προφορική εξέταση στις εννέα.

o ipopsífios dhíni proforikí eksétasi stis enéa.

The candidate is taking an oral exam at nine.

Η σκηνοθέτρια έδωσε συνέντευξη σε ένα πολιτιστικό περιοδικό.

i skinothétria édhose sinéndefksi se éna politistikó periodhikó.

The director gave an interview to a cultural magazine.

Σου δίνω την υπόσχεσή μου ότι δεν θα το αναβάλω ξανά.

su dhíno tin ipóschesí mu óti dhen tha to anaválo ksaná.

I give you my word that I won't postpone it again.

With παίρνω, English transfer moves in the other direction. Greek uses παίρνω for making a decision, calling someone, and taking leave. Παίρνω τηλέφωνο τη Μαρία uses a direct-object accusative for the person called. With τηλεφωνώ, an overt name occurs in a σε + accusative phrase (τηλεφωνώ στη Μαρία), while a weak-pronoun recipient is genitive in neutral Standard Greek (της τηλεφωνώ).

Πάρε με τηλέφωνο μόλις φτάσεις στον σταθμό.

páre me tiléfono mólis ftásis ston stathmó.

Call me as soon as you reach the station.

Δεν έχω πάρει ακόμη απόφαση για τη νέα θέση.

dhen écho pári akómi apófasi ya ti néa thési.

I haven't made a decision about the new position yet.

Πήρα δύο μέρες άδεια για να μετακομίσω.

píra dhío méres ádhia ya na metakomíso.

I took two days off to move house.

💡
When two verbs describe opposite participant roles, store the role with the phrase: the interviewee δίνει συνέντευξη, while the interviewer παίρνει συνέντευξη από κάποιον.

Βάζω, βγάζω, and ρίχνω: vivid source meanings

These verbs retain more imagery. Βάζω μπρος sets a mechanism or plan in motion; βάζω στοίχημα places a wager. Βγάζω φωτογραφία presents the photograph as an output, while ρίχνω μια ματιά presents a glance as a quick, bounded action.

Βάζω στοίχημα ότι το λεωφορείο θα αργήσει πάλι.

vázo stíchima óti to leoforío tha aryísi páli.

I bet the bus will be late again.

Έβαλε μπρος τον κινητήρα και άφησε το φορτηγό να ζεσταθεί.

évale bros ton kinitíra ke áfise to fortighó na zestathí.

He started the engine and let the truck warm up.

Μας έβγαλε μια φωτογραφία μπροστά στην είσοδο του θεάτρου.

mas évghale mia fotoghrafía brostá stin ísodho tu theátru.

She took a photograph of us in front of the theatre entrance.

Ρίξε μια ματιά στο μήνυμα πριν το στείλω.

ríkse mia matiá sto mínima prin to stílo.

Have a quick look at the message before I send it.

Βγάζω λόγο is current for giving a speech, though εκφωνώ λόγο is the more formal reporting choice. The phrase does not license arbitrary replacements of βγάζω with English-style make.

Ο πρόεδρος έβγαλε σύντομο λόγο πριν αρχίσει η τελετή.

o próedhros évghale síndomo lógho prin archísi i teletí.

The chair gave a short speech before the ceremony began.

💡
When English “take” is ambiguous, ask what actually happens. Creating an image is βγάζω φωτογραφία; moving a printed photograph can be παίρνω μια φωτογραφία. The surrounding object and goal matter as much as the English verb.

Common Mistakes

Using English make for απόφαση

❌ Πρέπει να κάνουμε μια απόφαση σήμερα.

Incorrect — απόφαση conventionally selects παίρνω.

✅ Πρέπει να πάρουμε μια απόφαση σήμερα.

prépi na párume mia apófasi símera.

We have to make a decision today.

Assuming παίρνω εξετάσεις means “sit exams”

In educational contexts, candidates δίνουν εξετάσεις. Παίρνω τις εξετάσεις can instead be understood literally as collecting the papers or results, so it is not marked ungrammatical.

Τον Ιούνιο δίνω εξετάσεις για το δίπλωμα οδήγησης.

ton Iúnio dhíno eksetásis ya to dhíploma odhíyisis.

In June I'm taking the driving test.

Translating “take a photo” with παίρνω without checking context

Παίρνω μια φωτογραφία από το συρτάρι means take a physical photo from the drawer. For creating an image, use βγάζω or τραβάω φωτογραφία.

Έβγαλα φωτογραφία το πρόγραμμα για να μην το ξεχάσω.

évghala fotoghrafía to próghrama ya na min to ksecháso.

I photographed the schedule so that I wouldn't forget it.

Treating κάνω μπάνιο as only a bathtub expression

The location supplies the reading; at the beach it normally refers to swimming or bathing in the sea.

Το απόγευμα κάναμε μπάνιο σε έναν ήσυχο κόλπο.

to apóyevma káname bánio se énan ísicho kólpo.

In the afternoon we swam in a quiet bay.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn the whole frame, then vary its grammar: παίρνω μια δύσκολη απόφαση, πήραμε οριστική απόφαση.
  • Candidates δίνουν εξετάσεις; interviewees δίνουν συνέντευξη; people παίρνουν αποφάσεις, τηλέφωνο, and άδεια.
  • Βγάζω φωτογραφία creates an image; παίρνω μια φωτογραφία may simply move a physical photograph.
  • Participant viewpoint explains some contrasts, but conventional partner selection must still be learned.
