Adjectives do more than classify nouns: repeated pairings develop conventional meanings. Ψιλή βροχή is fine, light rain; στενός φίλος is a close friend; ζεστό χρώμα is a warm color. Another adjective may be grammatically possible but evoke a different property, sound more creative, or simply be less expected.
This is probabilistic knowledge, not a list of bans. Good speakers exploit unexpected combinations deliberately. Learners first need the neutral pairing and the inference it normally triggers, then they can recognize where context changes the choice.

The adjective still agrees with an inflected noun: στενός φίλος, στενή φίλη, στενοί φίλοι. Color words have additional patterns, especially when a color name behaves as an indeclinable noun; see Color Adjectives. The ordinary -ος, -η, -ο agreement system is reviewed under Adjectives in -ος, -η, -ο.
Coffee: strong is not automatically heavy
The common claim that Greek permits βαρύς καφές but not δυνατός καφές is false. Both pairings are current. Δυνατός foregrounds strength—taste, concentration, or stimulating effect. Βαρύς foregrounds weight as experienced: body, intensity, or the drink's effect on the stomach. A dark, intense coffee may naturally receive both descriptions.
Μου έφτιαξε έναν πολύ δυνατό καφέ χωρίς καθόλου ζάχαρη.
mu éftiakse énan polí dhinató kafé chorís kathólu záchari.
She made me a very strong coffee with no sugar at all.
Αυτός ο καφές είναι βαρύς για μένα μετά το φαγητό.
aftós o kafés íne varís ya ména metá to fayitó.
This coffee is too heavy for me after a meal.
Παρόλο που έχει έντονο άρωμα, ο καφές δεν μου φαίνεται βαρύς.
parólo pu échi éndono ároma, o kafés dhen mu fénete varís.
Although it has an intense aroma, the coffee doesn't seem heavy to me.
English strong coffee leaves several dimensions unresolved too. Greek offers an additional habitual contrast, but context and speaker perception remain decisive.
Weather and work
Ψιλή βροχή describes droplet size and the fine texture of rainfall; it is written with ι, unlike ψηλή “tall.” It often corresponds to English fine rain or drizzle, though ψιλόβροχο and ψιχαλίζει can be more specifically drizzly.
Μια ψιλή βροχή άρχισε μόλις βγήκαμε από το θέατρο.
mia psilí vrochí árchise mólis vyíkame apó to théatro.
A fine rain began as soon as we came out of the theatre.
Η ψιλή βροχή κράτησε όλο το πρωί, αλλά οι δρόμοι δεν πλημμύρισαν.
i psilí vrochí krátise ólo to proí, alá i dhrómi dhen plimírisan.
The fine rain lasted all morning, but the roads did not flood.
Γερή δουλειά is genuine, but it is not a mechanical equivalent of English good job. Καλή δουλειά! praises a result. Γερή δουλειά presents the work as substantial, demanding, robust, or thorough; έπεσε γερή δουλειά often means that serious effort went into something.
Έπεσε γερή δουλειά για να ανοίξει το κατάστημα στην ώρα του.
épese yerí dhuliá ya na aníksi to katástima stin óra tu.
A lot of hard work went into opening the shop on time.
Οι τεχνίτες έκαναν γερή δουλειά στα θεμέλια του παλιού σπιτιού.
i technítes ékanan yerí dhuliá sta themélia tu paliú spitiú.
The tradespeople did solid work on the foundations of the old house.
Because γερή evaluates solidity or scale, its exact English rendering changes with the noun and situation. That is a reason to learn contexts, not to discard the pairing.
Color pairings
Ζεστό and ψυχρό classify colors by their visual associations, not literal temperature. Ανοιχτό and σκούρο grade lightness and darkness. With indeclinable color names such as μπλε, the modifier carries the agreement information for the larger noun phrase.
Διάλεξαν ένα ζεστό χρώμα για το καθιστικό, κοντά στην ώχρα.
dhiáleksan éna zestó chróma ya to kathistikó, kondá stin óchra.
They chose a warm color for the living room, close to ochre.
Το ανοιχτό μπλε κάνει το μικρό δωμάτιο να φαίνεται πιο φωτεινό.
to anichtó ble káni to mikró dhomátio na fénete pio fotinó.
The light blue makes the small room look brighter.
Φόρεσε ένα σκούρο πράσινο σακάκι στη συνέντευξη.
fórese éna skúro prásino sakáki sti sinéndefksi.
He wore a dark green jacket to the interview.
Food, relationships, and expressive language
Ψητό κρέας describes cooking by roasting or grilling; the exact method comes from context. Φρέσκο ψωμί normally means recently made bread, but freshness can also contrast with frozen, packaged, or stale food.
Το μαγαζί σερβίρει ψητό κρέας με πατάτες και σαλάτα.
to maghazí servíri psitó kréas me patátes ke saláta.
The restaurant serves grilled meat with potatoes and salad.
Πήρα φρέσκο ψωμί από τον φούρνο της γειτονιάς.
píra frésko psomí apó ton fúrno tis yitoniás.
I bought fresh bread from the neighborhood bakery.
For relationships, στενός φίλος is neutral “close friend”; it describes closeness, not physical narrowness. Τρελή αγάπη is more expressive. It can celebrate overwhelming passion, dramatize a romance, or provide a vivid title. It is not the neutral default for every loving relationship.
Η Ελένη είναι στενή μου φίλη από τα φοιτητικά μας χρόνια.
i Eléni íne stení mu fíli apó ta fititiká mas chrónia.
Eleni has been a close friend of mine since our student days.
Η τρελή τους αγάπη έγινε θέμα συζήτησης σε όλη τη γειτονιά.
i trelí tus aghápi éyine théma sizítisis se óli ti yitoniá.
Their wild love became a topic of conversation throughout the neighborhood. (expressive)
Common Mistakes
Confusing ψιλή and ψηλή
For fine rain, write ψιλή βροχή, not ×ψηλή βροχή. Ψηλή means “tall/high” and belongs with nouns whose height is being described.
Έξω πέφτει ψιλή βροχή, οπότε πάρε ομπρέλα.
ékso péfti psilí vrochí, opóte páre ombréla.
It's drizzling outside, so take an umbrella.
Using γερή δουλειά as automatic praise
Καλή δουλειά! is the direct congratulatory formula. Γερή δουλειά says that the work is substantial, demanding, or solid.
Καλή δουλειά! Η παρουσίαση ήταν πολύ καθαρή.
kalí dhuliá! i parusíasi ítan polí katharí.
Good job! The presentation was very clear.
Treating δυνατός καφές as an error
It is neutral for strength. Choose βαρύς only when its heaviness profile is the relevant meaning.
Ζήτησα δυνατό καφέ, όχι απαραίτητα βαρύ.
zítisa dhinató kafé, óchi aparétita varí.
I asked for strong coffee, not necessarily a heavy one.
Forgetting adjective agreement
The conventional pairing does not suspend morphology: στενός φίλος → στενή φίλη.
❌ Η Άννα είναι στενός μου φίλη.
Incorrect — the adjective must agree with the feminine noun φίλη.
✅ Η Άννα είναι στενή μου φίλη.
i Ána íne stení mu fíli.
Anna is a close friend of mine.
Key Takeaways
- Collocations guide likely interpretation; they do not make every alternative ungrammatical.
- Δυνατός καφές emphasizes strength, while βαρύς καφές emphasizes experienced heaviness or body; overlap is normal.
- Ψιλή βροχή contains ψιλή “fine,” not ψηλή “tall.”
- Γερή δουλειά describes substantial or robust work; Καλή δουλειά! is the ordinary praise formula.
- Neutral στενός φίλος contrasts with expressive τρελή αγάπη in register and emotional force.
