Model Verb Type 5: tarvita — Full Conjugation

Tarvita ("to need") is the reference verb for Type 5, a small closed class of verbs ending in -ita/-itä. The signature is a hidden expansion: the short -ita infinitive opens up into a -tse- present stem. Tarvita → tarvitse-, exactly like valita → valitsen ("choose"), häiritä → häiritsen ("disturb"), mainita → mainitsen ("mention"). There is no consonant gradation. The one form you cannot guess from the present is the past participle, which collapses the -tse- right back down: tarvinnut, not *tarvitsenut. If you can find the stem tarvitse- and remember that single irregular participle, the whole paradigm falls out.

Present and past (indicative)

Stem tarvitse-. The past drops the -e- before -i-: tarvitsi.

Tarvitsen apua tämän kaapin kokoamisessa.

I need help assembling this cabinet.

Kasvi tarvitsee enemmän valoa kuin luulin.

The plant needs more light than I thought.

Tarvitsin eilen lääkäriä, mutta kaikki ajat olivat varattuja.

I needed a doctor yesterday, but every slot was taken.

💡
The trap is conjugating straight off the infinitive. It is not *tarvin from tarvita — the present stem is tarvitse-, so "I need" is tarvitsen. Learn the verb by its -tse- stem, not its dictionary form, and this class becomes regular.

Perfect and pluperfect

Both use olla plus the participle tarvinnut (plural tarvinneet) — the form that surprises everyone, because the -tse- vanishes.

minäolen tarvinnutolin tarvinnut
hänon tarvinnutoli tarvinnut
meolemme tarvinneetolimme tarvinneet
heovat tarvinneetolivat tarvinneet
negativeen ole tarvinnuten ollut tarvinnut

En ole koskaan tarvinnut autoa keskustassa.

I have never needed a car in the city center.

Conditional, potential, imperative

The conditional drops the -e- before -isi-: tarvitsisi. The potential (formal/literary) builds on the infinitive stem tarvit-: tarvinnee. The imperative is tarvitse!, with the plural and jussive forms on tarvit- (tarvitkaa, tarvitkoon).

The perfect conditional is olisin tarvinnut ("I would have needed").

Tarvitsisitko sinä tätä vielä, vai voinko heittää sen pois?

Would you still need this, or can I throw it away?

Passive

The passive drops the -tse- and builds on tarvit-: present tarvitaan, past tarvittiin.

Infinitives and participles

The MA-infinitive and the present/agent participles keep the -tse-; the passive participle drops it.

Tarvita usually takes a partitive object, because needing is by nature partial and open-ended: tarvitsen apua ("I need help"), tarvitsen lisää aikaa ("I need more time"). A total object appears when the need is bounded and complete: tarvitsen sen kirjan huomiseksi ("I need that (particular) book by tomorrow").

Tarvitsen lisää aikaa, ennen kuin voin päättää.

I need more time before I can decide.

Key Takeaways

  • Present stem tarvitse-: the short -ita infinitive expands to -tse- (tarvitsen, like valita → valitsen).
  • Past tarvitsi, conditional tarvitsisi keep the -tse-.
  • Participle tarvinnut (pl. tarvinneet) collapses the -tse- — the one form you must memorise.
  • Passive tarvitaan / tarvittiin drops the -tse- too. Object is normally partitive (tarvitsen apua).
