The contemplated form of an -um- actor-voice family presents an event as not yet begun. It commonly expresses a plan, prediction, expectation, or later step, so English often uses will or be going to. Filipino is marking the event's phase, however, not conjugating for future tense.
The most visible surprise is that contemplated forms omit -um-. They retain actor voice because they belong to the same lexical paradigm as kumain, bumili, sumulat, and umalis, not because the letters um must appear in every cell.
The complementary infinitive and contemplated forms page compares this distinction across several voice families. Here the formation rules are narrowed to -um- verbs.
Forming the contemplated member
For a consonant-initial root, reduplicate its first consonant–vowel sequence. For a vowel-initial root, reduplicate the initial vowel. Do not insert -um-.
| Root | Basic/completed | Contemplated structure | Contemplated form |
|---|---|---|---|
| kain | kumain | ka + kain | kakain |
| bili | bumili | bi + bili | bibili |
| sulat | sumulat | su + sulat | susulat |
| takbo | tumakbo | ta + takbo | tatakbo |
| alis | umalis | a + alis | aalis |
| akyat | umakyat | a + akyat | aakyat |
| uwi | umuwi | u + uwi | uuwi |
The doubled vowels in aalis, aakyat, and uuwi are standard spelling and represent reduplication. They are not typographical errors and do not take a hyphen in ordinary running text.
Aalis si Mercy pagkatapos ng huling pulong.
Mercy will leave after the final meeting.
Susulat ang kalihim sa mga kalahok kapag handa na ang programa.
The secretary will write to the participants when the program is ready.
The actor pivots remain si Mercy and ang kalihim even though no -um- is visible. Sa mga kalahok is the personal group's endpoint rather than a core patient.
Contemplated aspect is broader than future tense
The contemplated form profiles non-initiation relative to a viewpoint. Several common interpretations follow from context.
Intention or plan
Bibili ako ng bagong salamin kapag dumating ang sahod.
I will buy new eyeglasses when my salary arrives.
The event is intended but has not begun. Kapag sets a condition for carrying out the plan.
Prediction or expectation
Uulan mamayang hapon, kaya dalhin mo ang kapote.
It will rain this afternoon, so bring your raincoat.
Weather uulan has no deliberate actor. The actor-voice label describes the verb's morphological and alignment family, not conscious agency.
Prospective event inside a condition
Kung tatakbo ka bukas, matulog ka nang maaga ngayong gabi.
If you are going to run tomorrow, go to bed early tonight.
The contemplated form occurs inside a conditional clause. English may choose “are going to” rather than “will,” but the Filipino event remains not yet begun.
Later event viewed from a past plan
Akala namin, uuwi si Dado noong Biyernes, pero ipinagpaliban ang biyahe.
We thought Dado would go home on Friday, but the trip was postponed.
Uuwi is contemplated relative to the earlier expectation, even though the entire account is now in the past. This is another reason not to equate contemplated aspect with grammatical future tense.
Controlled comparison: basic versus contemplated
Many -um- families use an -um- basic form in a positive command but a reduplicated, -um--less form in an independent projection.
Kumain ka ng kaunti bago uminom ng gamot.
Eat a little before taking the medicine.
Kakain ka ng kaunti bago uminom ng gamot.
You will eat a little before taking the medicine.
The first is a directive; the second is a statement or firm prediction about the addressee. English distinguishes imperative eat from will eat. Filipino distinguishes basic kumain from contemplated kakain.
A dependent complement likewise commonly takes the basic form rather than the contemplated form:
Gusto ni Lira na sumama sa paglilibot bukas.
Lira wants to join the tour tomorrow.
The joining is future in real-world time, but sumama is basic because it is selected by gusto, not asserted independently as an unbegun event.
Negatives, questions, and a short exchange
Declarative hindi negates a contemplated event while leaving its aspect form intact.
Hindi sasama si Rene sa lakad dahil may pasok siya bukas.
Rene will not join the outing because he has work tomorrow.
A prohibition uses huwag plus the basic form instead. Compare Hindi siya sasama “He will not join” with Huwag siyang sumama “Do not let him join/He should not join.” Negator and verb form jointly identify the clause type.
—Bibili ba kayo ng pagkain sa daan? —Oo, bibili kami bago sumakay ng bus.
—Will you buy food on the way? —Yes, we will buy some before boarding the bus.
The question and answer both use contemplated bibili. Kayo includes the people addressed; exclusive kami in the reply excludes the questioner.
Lexical restrictions and variation
Reduplication is regular only after you know the root's actor-voice family. The root is a family of constructions, and one citation form hides its derivational system. Bili gives bibili, but luto ordinarily gives magluluto, not luluto or lumuluto, in actor voice.
Some contemporary speakers use more than one family with a root. Alongside bibiyahe from bumiyahe, magbibiyahe occurs in a mag- family. Preferences vary by speaker and collocation; neither pattern authorizes mixed forms such as bumibiyahe for contemplated aspect. Learn each accepted paradigm intact.
Voice also limits markers. In Bibili si Hana ng tiket, Hana is the actor pivot and the ticket is ng-marked. If a particular ticket is selected as patient pivot, use an established patient-voice form and remap the participants rather than changing ng to ang alone.
Common Mistakes
Keeping -um- in the contemplated form
❌ Kukumain si Pio pagkatapos ng pagsusuri.
Incorrect — the contemplated member of the kumain family omits -um-.
✅ Kakain si Pio pagkatapos ng pagsusuri.
Pio will eat after the examination.
The correct form repeats ka- from the root kain.
Treating doubled initial vowels as an error
❌ A-alis ang unang pangkat bago magbukang-liwayway.
Incorrect standard spelling — contemplated alis is written aalis without a hyphen.
✅ Aalis ang unang pangkat bago magbukang-liwayway.
The first group will leave before dawn.
The doubled aa transparently reflects vowel reduplication.
Copying English declarative negation into a prohibition
❌ Hindi ka umalis nang walang paalam.
Wrong as a prohibition — this is a completed declarative meaning ‘You did not leave without saying goodbye.’
✅ Huwag kang umalis nang walang paalam.
Do not leave without saying goodbye.
The correction changes both the negator and the clause type. Here nang walang paalam is an adverbial expression meaning “without saying goodbye”; it is not written with marker ng.
Adding a universal future prefix
❌ Magbibili si Olan ng prutas bago umuwi.
Incorrect for the ordinary contemplated member of the bumili family; mag- cannot be added as a universal future marker.
✅ Bibili si Olan ng prutas bago umuwi.
Olan will buy fruit before going home.
Mag- is part of particular verb families, not the Filipino equivalent of English will.
Key Takeaways
- Contemplated -um- families use root reduplication without visible -um-: kakain, bibili, aalis.
- The form presents an event as not yet begun; it can express plans, predictions, conditions, and past expectations.
- Basic forms still appear in positive commands and many dependent complements with future reference.
- Actor-voice alignment remains even when the letters um disappear.
- Paradigm membership is lexical, and accepted alternative families must be learned separately.
