The root tulog covers sleep, the state of being asleep, and events that cause someone to sleep. Matulog selects the sleeper, makatulog adds ability or successful attainment, magpatulog selects the person causing sleep, and patulugin selects the caused sleeper. English often uses sleep, fall asleep, and put to sleep without showing the Filipino voice frame.
All unlabelled forms below are neutral contemporary Filipino. The valency guide explains why adding a causer creates a new construction rather than merely a longer form of one verb.
Core Forms and Functions
| Family and function | Basic | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| sleeper pivot | matulog | natulog | natutulog | matutulog |
| ability or successful opportunity | makatulog | nakatulog | nakakatulog | makakatulog |
| causer pivot | magpatulog | nagpatulog | nagpapatulog | magpapatulog |
| caused sleeper pivot | patulugin | pinatulog | pinapatulog | papatulugin |
| sleeping place or event selected | tulugan | tinulugan | tinutulugan | tutulugan |
Root-reduplicating pinatutulog/patutulugin also occur beside pinapatulog/papatulugin. The pinapa-/papa- series in the table is a widely usable contemporary model. The alternatives do not reliably signal a different degree of causation; speaker and lexical preference matter.
Sleeping and Being Asleep
Matulog has one core participant, the sleeper, marked with an ang/si form. A place is normally a sa phrase, and manner takes nang.
Natulog si Isay sa duyan matapos bantayan ang tindahan buong hapon.
Isay slept in the hammock after minding the shop all afternoon.
Natutulog pa ang kuting sa ibabaw ng salansan ng diyaryo.
The kitten is still sleeping on top of the stack of newspapers.
Completed natulog presents a bounded sleeping event. Incompleted natutulog can describe sleep underway or a recurring habit; it is not a present-tense form by itself.
Bare tulog is a state predicate meaning “asleep,” and Filipino needs no equivalent of English is:
Tulog na si Isay, kaya bukas mo na lang ibigay sa kaniya ang mensahe.
Isay is asleep now, so just give her the message tomorrow.
Compare Natulog na si Isay “Isay has gone to sleep/slept already,” which presents an event, with Tulog na si Isay, which describes the resulting state. This event–state contrast is more useful than trying to insert English be.
Ability and Successful Attainment
Makatulog foregrounds whether sleep is possible or achieved. Completed nakatulog often implies success despite some obstacle.
Sa wakas, nakatulog din si Orestes kahit maingay ang mga sasakyan sa labas.
At last, Orestes managed to fall asleep despite the noisy vehicles outside.
Hindi ako makakatulog kung bukas ang ilaw sa pasilyo.
I will not be able to sleep if the hallway light is on.
The second sentence expresses prospective ability, not ordinary contemplated matutulog “will sleep/intends to sleep.” English will sleep can translate either form in some contexts, but the ability meaning is present only in maka-.
Selecting the Causer or the Caused Sleeper
Magpatulog adds a causer and selects that participant as actor pivot. The sleeper is a non-pivot ng phrase.
Nagpatulog si Cora ng sanggol sa tahimik na silid bago nagsimula ang salu-salo.
Cora put the baby to sleep in the quiet room before the gathering began. (causer pivot)
To select the caused sleeper, use patulugin:
Pinatulog ni Cora ang sanggol sa tahimik na silid bago nagsimula ang salu-salo.
Cora put the baby to sleep in the quiet room before the gathering began. (caused sleeper pivot)
The controlled pair keeps the event constant. Si Cora + ng sanggol becomes ni Cora + ang sanggol. English uses the same active causative for both; Filipino voice determines which participant anchors the clause.
Depending on context, causative pa- can mean soothe, allow, instruct, or compel. With a baby, “put to sleep” usually implies care; with a disruptive participant, it could be a directive. The affix alone does not specify the social force.
Papatulugin muna ng nars ang pasyente bago simulan ang pagsusuri.
The nurse will first put the patient to sleep before beginning the examination.
Here the medical context favors induced sleep. The exact method is not encoded in the verb.
Tulugan as Verb and Noun
Verbal tulugan selects a place, surface, or occasion on which sleep occurs. Its use is more context-dependent than ordinary matulog sa... and can imply that the selected event or place was slept through or used for sleeping.
Tinulugan ng mga pagod na manlalakbay ang silungan sa hintayan noong gabing iyon.
The tired travelers slept in the shelter at the stop that night.
In ordinary speech, Natulog ang mga manlalakbay sa silungan sa hintayan would also be possible, with the travelers selected instead.
Tulugan is also a noun meaning sleeping place or quarters. Syntax distinguishes the homographs: malinis na tulugan is a noun phrase, while tulugan ninyo ang silid is a verbal directive. Because the verb can sound marked without a supporting context, default to matulog sa... when you simply want to name a location.
Collocations, Questions, and Recent Completion
Common expressions include matulog nang maaga, mahimbing na tulog, tulog na tulog “sound asleep,” and tulog-mantika “sleeping very deeply” (informal). Tulog-manok means light or easily interrupted sleep (informal). These compounds are conventional; do not create new ones mechanically.
—Matutulog ka na ba? —Hindi pa; tatapusin ko muna ang binabasa kong kabanata.
—Are you going to sleep now? —Not yet; I'll finish the chapter I'm reading first.
The question uses contemplated matutulog for an unbegun event. The reply uses hindi pa because sleep has not happened; a recent-perfective form would contradict that meaning.
Recent-perfective katutulog means “has just gone to sleep,” commonly with an ng-form actor and lang/lamang. Widespread kakatulog is also accepted.
Huwag mong tawagan si Ador; katutulog lang niya matapos ang magdamagang trabaho.
Don't call Ador; he has just gone to sleep after working all night.
Common Mistakes
Using ability morphology for a neutral report
❌ Nakatulog si Isay sa duyan tuwing hapon.
Misleading for the intended neutral habit—nakatulog suggests that Isay managed to sleep.
✅ Natutulog si Isay sa duyan tuwing hapon.
Isay sleeps in the hammock every afternoon.
Keeping the caused sleeper ang-marked with causer-pivot magpa-
❌ Nagpatulog si Cora ang sanggol bago ang salu-salo.
Incorrect—nagpatulog selects Cora, so the caused sleeper takes ng.
✅ Nagpatulog si Cora ng sanggol bago ang salu-salo.
Cora put the baby to sleep before the gathering.
Keeping the causer as pivot with pinatulog
❌ Pinatulog si Cora ang sanggol sa tahimik na silid.
Incorrect—pinatulog selects the caused sleeper, so Cora takes ni.
✅ Pinatulog ni Cora ang sanggol sa tahimik na silid.
Cora put the baby to sleep in the quiet room.
Confusing object ng with manner nang
❌ Natulog ng mahimbing ang bata matapos uminom ng gatas.
Incorrect—mahimbing describes manner and requires nang.
✅ Natulog nang mahimbing ang bata matapos uminom ng gatas.
The child slept soundly after drinking milk.
