Pagitan, tabi, loob, and labas name spatial regions: an intervening space, an adjacent side, an interior, and an exterior. Combined with sa or nasa, they do work that English assigns to between, beside, in, and outside.
These are relational nouns, not four simple prepositions. A following ng/ni/nina phrase or pronoun identifies the reference point: sa loob ng gusali, sa tabi ni Mara, sa pagitan nila.
Core patterns
| Pattern | Relation | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| sa/nasa pagitan ng X at Y | between X and Y | two endpoints are normally named or understood |
| sa/nasa tabi ng X | beside/next to X | adjacency, not accompaniment |
| sa/nasa loob ng X | inside/within X | profiles an enclosure or bounded span |
| sa/nasa labas ng X | outside X | profiles the exterior relative to a boundary |
| katabi ng X | be adjacent to X | alternative relational predicate |
As elsewhere, nasa forms a locative predicate, while sa attaches the relational phrase to a verb or other predicate.
pagitan: an intervening space or relation
Nasa pagitan ng botika at bangko ang makitid na eskinita.
The narrow alley is between the pharmacy and the bank.
Umupo si Tino sa pagitan nina Bea at Noel para marinig niya silang dalawa.
Tino sat between Bea and Noel so he could hear both of them.
The common-noun pair appears after ng and is coordinated by at. Two personal names take nina. With pronouns, use a possessive form: sa pagitan natin “between us,” sa pagitan nila “between them.”
Pagitan can also describe abstract relationships or a span: ang ugnayan sa pagitan ng dalawang tanggapan “the relationship between the two offices.” In careful writing, naming both sides prevents ambiguity.
tabi: adjacency, not English with
Nasa tabi ng timbangan ang supot ng bigas.
The sack of rice is beside the scale.
—Saan ako uupo? —Dito, sa tabi ko, para makita mo ang talaan.
—Where should I sit? —Here, beside me, so you can see the list.
Sa tabi ko describes a location beside the speaker. It does not by itself mean social accompaniment. “Come with me” is Sumama ka sa akin, while “Sit beside me” is Umupo ka sa tabi ko.
An alternative predicate uses katabi:
Katabi ng botika ang maliit na panaderya.
The small bakery is next to the pharmacy.
Nasa tabi ng botika ang maliit na panaderya expresses the same basic spatial arrangement through a nasa phrase. Katabi is often more compact when adjacency itself is the main predicate. Both are neutral contemporary Filipino.
loob and labas: boundaries matter
Nasa loob ng pulang sobre ang resibo at garantiya.
The receipt and warranty are inside the red envelope.
Maghintay tayo sa labas ng klinika hanggang tawagin ang pangalan mo.
Let's wait outside the clinic until your name is called.
Loob explicitly profiles an interior; labas profiles what lies beyond the boundary. Simple sa is often sufficient when the boundary is not contrastive:
Nasa opisina si Mila, pero wala siya sa loob ng silid-pulong.
Mila is at the office, but she is not inside the meeting room.
Nasa opisina gives the general institutional location. Sa loob ng silid-pulong specifically tests the room's interior. English in the office does not force Filipino to use loob.
The negative and contrastive forms keep the same relational structure:
Hindi sa loob ng kahon kundi sa labas nito inilagay ang etiketa.
The label was placed not inside the box but on its outside.
Here hindi ... kundi ... corrects which region is intended. For simple absence, use wala sa loob ng kahon “it is not inside the box.”
Spatial and temporal loob
Sa loob ng also marks a bounded period, commonly “within” or “over the course of.” Context determines whether the action must be completed before the interval ends or occurs throughout it.
Natapos ni Lira ang ulat sa loob ng dalawang oras.
Lira finished the report within two hours.
This sentence measures the bounded time until completion. By contrast, Nagtrabaho si Lira nang dalawang oras means “Lira worked for two hours” and uses adverbial nang, not the relational phrase sa loob ng. English in/for two hours tempts learners to collapse the two structures.
Sa labas ng also has an abstract extension meaning “outside/beyond the scope of,” especially in formal prose: sa labas ng aming tungkulin “outside our responsibility.” This is established usage, not permission to translate every abstract English outside literally.
Reference points can be omitted
In a shared physical setting, sa loob, sa labas, sa tabi, and sa pagitan can occur without an overt complement when the reference point or endpoints are obvious.
Iwan mo muna ang basang payong sa labas; may lalagyan sa tabi.
Leave the wet umbrella outside for now; there is a holder nearby.
Here sa labas leaves the enclosing place unspoken, while sa tabi leaves the holder's landmark unspoken. The shared physical setting supplies both reference points. This is ordinary contextual omission, not a different preposition.
Long complements nest regularly:
Nasa loob ng kabinet ng silid-aklatan ang mga lumang mapa.
The old maps are inside the library's cabinet.
The structure is loob [ng kabinet [ng silid-aklatan]]. Each ng marks a separate possessive-like relation. For the general pattern, see possessive relators with ng.
Common Mistakes
Replacing the complement marker with sa
❌ Nasa loob sa bag ang gamot.
Incorrect — bag is the reference point that completes loob, so it takes ng.
✅ Nasa loob ng bag ang gamot.
The medicine is inside the bag.
Linking two endpoints with sa
❌ Nasa pagitan ng paaralan sa palengke ang tulay.
Incorrect — the two endpoints of pagitan are coordinated with at.
✅ Nasa pagitan ng paaralan at palengke ang tulay.
The bridge is between the school and the market.
Using kay after tabi
❌ Umupo si Ben sa tabi kay Liza.
Nonstandard in this relational-noun structure — the personal reference point takes ni.
✅ Umupo si Ben sa tabi ni Liza.
Ben sat beside Liza.
Overtranslating English in
❌ Nasa loob ng Maynila ang opisina namin.
Overly spatial for the ordinary city-location meaning; it emphasizes being within Manila's boundary.
✅ Nasa Maynila ang opisina namin.
Our office is in Manila.
The first form can be appropriate when contrasting locations inside and outside an official boundary. The correction gives the neutral location.
Key Takeaways
- Pagitan, tabi, loob, and labas are relational nouns inside larger sa/nasa phrases.
- Their reference point takes ng, ni/nina, or a possessive pronoun form.
- Pagitan normally identifies two endpoints; tabi expresses adjacency rather than accompaniment.
- Loob/labas profile a boundary, so simple sa/nasa is often better for a general location.
- Sa loob ng can bound time, but duration with “for two hours” commonly uses nang dalawang oras.
