Paano asks “how?” about manner, method, procedure, means, or the way a situation will develop. It normally stands first, followed by the clause’s ordinary pronouns, aspect, voice, and participant markers. English how did you...? does not require a Filipino auxiliary: Paano mo ginawa...? is complete.
Do not use paano for every English expression containing how. Greetings usually use kumusta, while degree and extent use gaano.
Main functions
| Pattern | Question asked | Typical answer |
|---|---|---|
| Paano + event? | method or means | Sa pamamagitan ng... |
| Paano ginagawa...? | procedure | ordered steps |
| Paano na...? | what happens now / how will it proceed | new plan or outcome |
| Paano kung...? | what if | condition and response |
| Paano naman...? | how about / what about in contrast | parallel case |
Nakarating si Inez sa isla sakay ng maliit na bangka.
Inez reached the island aboard a small boat. (statement of means)
Paano nakarating si Inez sa isla?
How did Inez reach the island? (question replacing the means)
The completed ability/result form nakarating and personal pivot si Inez remain unchanged. Paano replaces the unknown manner or means.
Pronouns and word order
An ang-form pronoun normally follows paano early:
Paano kayo makakauwi kung wala nang bumibiyaheng bus?
How will you get home if no buses are running anymore? (plural or respectful kayo)
A full pivot noun phrase commonly stays after the predicate:
Paano makakauwi ang mga bisita kapag isinara na ang tulay?
How will the guests get home when the bridge has been closed?
The root-copy form makauuwi is also accepted, especially in careful or (formal) usage. Prefix-copy makakauwi, used here, is widespread in contemporary speech and ordinary writing.
Patient voice keeps the actor in the ng series:
Paano mo inayos ang sirang kandado nang walang bagong piyesa?
How did you fix the broken lock without a new part?
Paano natin hahatiin ang gawain para matapos tayo bago mag-alas-singko?
How will we divide the work so that we finish before five? (inclusive natin/tayo)
Mo and natin are not English objects; they are non-pivot actors because ang sirang kandado and ang gawain are patient pivots. Question formation does not erase that voice relation.
Aspect distinguishes result, process, and plan
Compare the same patient-voice verb family:
Paano mo ginawa ang matibay na patungan?
How did you make the sturdy stand? (completed result)
Paano mo ginagawa ang patungan para hindi ito maging tabingi?
How do you make the stand so that it does not become crooked? (habitual process)
Paano mo gagawin ang patungan kung kulang ang tabla?
How will you make the stand if there is not enough lumber? (contemplated plan)
Ginawa, ginagawa, gagawin describe different aspectual contours. Paano remains constant because the unknown is the method in each question.
Asking for a procedure
Generic instructions commonly use patient voice without naming a specific actor. The affected product or task is the pivot.
Paano niluluto ang ginataang kalabasa nang hindi lumalapot nang sobra ang gata?
How is squash in coconut milk cooked without the coconut milk becoming too thick?
An answer may use imperatives, a sequence of completed-form time clauses, or manner phrases with nang. The spelling nang in nang hindi lumalapot introduces the manner or accompanying condition; it is not the ng phrase marker.
The manner-adverb guide develops the distinction between adverbial nang and phrase-marker ng.
Paano kung, paano na, and paano naman
These frequent combinations extend the basic method question into planning and discourse.
Paano kung hindi dumating bukas ang piyesang kailangan natin?
What if the part we need does not arrive tomorrow?
Sarado ang pangunahing daan; paano na tayo makararating sa ospital?
The main road is closed; how will we get to the hospital now?
May tutuluyan na ang mga guro; paano naman ang mga mag-aaral?
The teachers already have somewhere to stay; what about the students?
Paano kung asks the listener to consider a condition. Paano na asks how the plan or situation proceeds after a new development. Paano naman raises a contrasting participant or case. These are neutral conversational patterns, though tone can make them worried or reproachful.
Paano versus kumusta and gaano
Use kumusta for a routine inquiry about someone’s condition. Bare Paano ka? is not the dependable neutral equivalent of “How are you?”; it may instead suggest “How will you manage?” or “What about you?” depending on context.
Kumusta ka pagkatapos ng operasyon?
How are you after the operation? (condition or well-being)
Use gaano + adjective/adverb for degree or extent.
Gaano kalalim ang tubig sa bahaging iyon ng ilog?
How deep is the water in that part of the river?
Paano asks in what way; gaano kalalim asks to what degree. English uses how for both, but Filipino distinguishes the structures.
Ba, intonation, and a short exchange
Bare paano already forms a content question. Paano ba...? can ask for clarification or convey impatience, puzzlement, or emphasis.
Paano ba bubuksan ang kabinet kung nawawala ang susi?
How exactly are we supposed to open the cabinet if the key is missing? (puzzled or insistent)
—Paano ka nakapunta rito nang ganito kaaga? —Sumakay ako sa unang dyip na dumaan.
—How did you get here this early? —I took the first jeepney that came by. (informal exchange)
Neutral information questions often end with falling intonation. A rising Paano? can be an echo question asking the speaker to repeat the method or can express disbelief.
Common Mistakes
Copying English subject-first order
❌ Paano ikaw nakarating sa istasyon?
Unnatural as a neutral question — use enclitic ka after paano.
✅ Paano ka nakarating sa istasyon?
How did you get to the station?
Ignoring patient voice
❌ Paano ikaw ginawa ang parol na ito?
Incorrect — the definite parol is the patient pivot, so the actor must be ng-form mo.
✅ Paano mo ginawa ang parol na ito?
How did you make this lantern?
Using paano for degree
❌ Paano malalim ang balon sa likod ng bahay?
Incorrect for a degree question — paano asks manner, not depth.
✅ Gaano kalalim ang balon sa likod ng bahay?
How deep is the well behind the house?
Using paano as the ordinary greeting
❌ Paano ka ngayon?
Unreliable for the intended neutral ‘How are you?’ — it can suggest how the person will manage.
✅ Kumusta ka ngayon?
How are you now?
