Question-Word Position

In a neutral Filipino information question, the question word normally comes first and serves as the interrogative predicate or the head of an initial phrase: Sino ang tumawag?, Ano ang kailangan mo?, Saan ka pupunta? Filipino does not add English do/did or invert an auxiliary with a subject.

Particles and clitic pronouns gather immediately after the initial question word or phrase. A question word left in its statement position is possible mainly as an echo, repair, or expression of surprise—not as the default pattern.

This follows the same predicate-first baseline described for ordinary clauses in the basic predicate-first clause. Interrogative expressions occupy the predicate's early position rather than being added to an English-style subject-first template.

Neutral initial patterns

Initial expressionPatternExample
sino/ano/alinquestion predicate + ang descriptionSino ang dumating?
saan/kailan/bakit/paanoquestion word + clitic cluster + clauseSaan ka pupunta?
expanded question phrasewhole phrase firstAnong oras ka aalis?
relator + question wordrelator remains before its complementPara kanino ito?

From statement to neutral question

Aalis si Nena sa Biyernes ng umaga.

Nena will leave on Friday morning.

Kailan aalis si Nena?

When will Nena leave?

The requested time moves to the initial interrogative position. The contemplated verb and actor marking remain intact.

Dinala ni Nena ang mga kahon sa bodega.

Nena took the boxes to the storeroom.

Saan dinala ni Nena ang mga kahon?

Where did Nena take the boxes?

Patient/undergoer voice still selects ang mga kahon, while saan asks for the destination.

💡
Move the requested information to the front, but do not rebuild the rest as English subject–auxiliary–verb order.

Clitics follow the question word

Bakit ka pa naghihintay sa labas?

Why are you still waiting outside?

Short ka comes before particle pa. With a longer pronoun, the particle comes first:

Bakit pa sila naghihintay sa labas?

Why are they still waiting outside?

Reportive and question particles also occur early:

Saan daw nila nakita ang nawawalang aso?

Where did they reportedly see the missing dog?

Ano ba ang gusto mong linawin?

What exactly do you want to clarify?

An information question does not require ba, but ba can add insistence, engagement, or a request for specificity.

Expanded question phrases stay together

Anong oras magsisimula ang pagpupulong?

What time will the meeting begin?

Ilang araw kayong mananatili sa Iloilo?

How many days will you stay in Iloilo?

Para kanino mo inihanda ang ekstrang kopya?

For whom did you prepare the extra copy?

The linker in anong/ilang builds the question phrase. Para remains before kanino; Filipino does not strand it at the end in imitation of colloquial English Who did you prepare it for?

Other relational expressions behave similarly: Mula saan nanggaling ang amoy? asks for a source, while Hanggang kailan bukas ang tanggapan? asks for an endpoint in time. The entire relational question phrase comes first. This is more informative than a rule saying “move the wh-word,” because the relator and its complement form one unit and cannot be separated arbitrarily.

Hanggang kailan maaaring isumite ang mga aplikasyon?

Until when may the applications be submitted?

The undergoer pivot ang mga aplikasyon and formal modal maaari remain in their normal roles after the initial time-limit phrase.

Echo position is marked

Bumili ka ng ano?

You bought what? (surprised echo question)

Darating sila kailan?

They're arriving when? (request for repetition or surprise)

These are natural in conversation (informal/conversational) when the speaker failed to hear, cannot believe, or challenges a detail. Neutral requests are Ano ang binili mo? and Kailan sila darating? Intonation carries much of the echo force.

Negation and scope

Bakit hindi mo sinabi sa amin ang pagbabago?

Why didn't you tell us about the change?

Initial bakit has scope over the negative proposition hindi mo sinabi.... Moving bakit later can sound like an afterthought or echo rather than a neutral reason question.

Sino ang hindi pa nakakapirma sa talaan?

Who has not yet managed to sign the list?

The requested human is identified through sino ang..., while negative cluster hindi pa stays inside the description.

A short exchange

—Saan kayo magkikita mamaya? —Sa harap ng munisipyo. —Sa harap ng alin? —Ng lumang gusali, hindi ng bagong tanggapan.

—Where will you meet later? —In front of the municipal hall. —In front of which one? —The old building, not the new office.

The follow-up Sa harap ng alin? repeats the necessary relational frame. It is a repair question prompted by an ambiguous location.

💡
In-situ question words are useful for echoes; initial question words are the dependable neutral pattern. Do not treat the two positions as freely interchangeable.

Common Mistakes

❌ Ikaw ay pupunta saan bukas?

Marked and unnatural as a neutral question; it copies English subject-first structure and leaves saan in echo position.

✅ Saan ka pupunta bukas?

Where will you go tomorrow?

❌ Kailan ay umalis si Ruben?

Incorrect — ay cannot fill an English-style auxiliary slot after kailan.

✅ Kailan umalis si Ruben?

When did Ruben leave?

❌ Sino para ang regalong ito?

Incorrect — the relator para must introduce its question complement.

✅ Para kanino ang regalong ito?

For whom is this gift?

❌ Bakit sila pa naghihintay?

Unnatural standard clitic order — pa precedes the longer pronoun sila.

✅ Bakit pa sila naghihintay?

Why are they still waiting?

Key Takeaways

  • Neutral information questions place the question word or phrase first.
  • Filipino retains predicate-first structure without English auxiliary inversion.
  • Short pronouns and particles follow the initial question expression in their normal order.
  • Relators stay with question complements: para kanino, galing saan, sa alin.
  • In-situ question words are marked echo or repair strategies, especially in conversation.
