English spreads not across events, properties, location, and possession, and it builds negative possession with do not have. Filipino divides these meanings structurally. Hindi denies that a predicate is true; wala asserts nonexistence, absence, or lack. Translating not first and then substituting Filipino words produces calques such as hindi ako may susi.
The repair is to recast the whole message. Ask whether something exists or is available. If the answer is no, use wala. If an existing participant simply does not have a property, identity, relation, or event attributed to it, use hindi.
The structural decision
| Intended meaning | Construction | Model |
|---|---|---|
| an event does not occur | hindi + verbal predicate | Hindi dumating si Eva. |
| a property, identity, or relation is false | hindi + predicate | Hindi malamig ang sabaw. |
| no entity of a type exists | walang + expression | Walang tubig. |
| an identified person or thing is absent | wala + ang/si phrase | Wala si Eva. |
| someone lacks something | wala + ang-pronoun + linker | Wala akong susi. |
| a direct negative command | huwag | Huwag kang umalis. |
The broader contrast is developed in hindi versus wala.
Hindi denies a predicate about something present
Use hindi when the clause denies an event, property, classification, or relation.
Hindi dumalo si Enzo sa pagdinig dahil nilalagnat siya.
Enzo did not attend the hearing because he had a fever.
Hindi matamis ang kape sa termos na ito.
The coffee in this thermos is not sweet.
Hindi gamot ang laman ng maliit na bote.
The contents of the small bottle are not medicine.
In all three sentences, there is something to predicate about: Enzo, the coffee, or the bottle's contents. Hindi rejects the event or description. It does not say that those participants are absent.
Aspect remains on the verb. Hindi dumalo, hindi dumadalo, and hindi dadalo deny completed, incompleted, and contemplated attendance respectively; hindi itself is not an English tense-bearing auxiliary.
Wala supplies the negative existential
Positive may/mayroon presents existence or availability. Its ordinary negative counterpart is wala, not hindi may.
Walang malinis na tuwalya sa paliguan.
There are no clean towels in the bathroom.
Walang nakatalang pulong para sa Martes ng umaga.
There is no meeting scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Surface walang is wala + linker -ng before the following expression. In the second example, the negative existential ranges over a meeting that satisfies the description nakatalang .... It is not merely hindi placed before the same positive clause.
For an identified absent person or thing, use wala + si/ang phrase:
Wala si Dr. Ramos sa klinika; nasa isang kumperensiya siya sa Cebu.
Dr. Ramos is not at the clinic; he is at a conference in Cebu.
The sentence asserts absence from an expected place. Hindi si Dr. Ramos sa klinika would instead begin a contrastive identification patternβroughly βIt is not Dr. Ramos at the clinicββand does not express the intended absence.
Negative possession is an absence construction
English says βI do not have a receipt,β with I as subject of have. Filipino presents the missing item relative to a possessor:
Wala akong resibo para sa biniling kagamitan.
I do not have a receipt for the equipment that was purchased.
Wala kaming sapat na oras para ulitin ang buong pagsusuri.
We do not have enough time to repeat the entire analysis. (exclusive we)
Akong and kaming are ang-form pronouns plus linker -ng before what is lacking. They are not the possessive ng-forms ko and namin. This structure directly contrasts with positive May resibo ako or Mayroon akong resibo.
A specific thing can exist but not belong to you
The contrast between denied ownership and lack shows why hindi and wala cannot be swapped mechanically.
Hindi akin ang payong na nasa tabi ng pinto.
The umbrella beside the door is not mine. (ownership relation denied)
Wala akong payong para sa pag-uwi mamaya.
I do not have an umbrella for going home later. (lack)
The first tracks a definite umbrella and rejects the relation akin. The second says no relevant umbrella is available to the speaker. English may use not mine and don't have; Filipino chooses between relation denial and existential lack.
Named nonparticipation differs from no participant
Hindi dumating si Mila sa takdang oras.
Mila did not arrive at the scheduled time.
Walang dumating na kinatawan mula sa kabilang tanggapan.
No representative from the other office arrived.
Hindi dumating si Mila denies an event involving a named person. Walang dumating na kinatawan says that no relevant person satisfied the event description. Replacing one negative word with the other requires rebuilding the participant structure.
Wala na/pa and hindi na/pa answer different questions
Both negatives combine with phase particles, but their base meanings remain distinct.
Wala na ang tagapangasiwa sa gusali, pero hindi pa sarado ang kaniyang tanggapan.
The administrator is no longer in the building, but the office is not closed yet.
Wala na says the person formerly present is gone. Hindi pa sarado denies the expected closed state up to now.
Compare expected absence and an unrealized property:
Wala pa si Lani, at hindi pa handa ang silid para sa pulong.
Lani is not here yet, and the room is not ready for the meeting yet.
The first concerns presence; the second concerns readiness.
Questions and a short exchange
βMay ekstrang kopya pa ba ng mapa? βWala na, pero hindi malabo ang kopyang nasa dingding.
βIs there still an extra copy of the map? βThere isn't, but the copy on the wall is not blurry.
The answer uses wala na for unavailable copies and hindi malabo to deny a property of an existing copy.
For direct negative commands, neither declarative pattern is enough. Use huwag:
Huwag mong ilagay ang basang payong sa ibabaw ng mga dokumento.
Do not put the wet umbrella on top of the documents.
Common Mistakes
Using hindi for missing material
β Hindi tubig sa gripo mula kaninang umaga.
Incorrect β the intended meaning is absence, not denial of a predicate about water.
β Walang tubig sa gripo mula kaninang umaga.
There has been no water from the faucet since this morning.
Preserving English do not have
β Hindi ako may barya para sa pamasahe sa traysikel.
Incorrect possession calque β negative possession uses wala and a linked ang-form possessor.
β Wala akong barya para sa pamasahe sa traysikel.
I do not have coins for the tricycle fare.
Negating mayroon word by word
β Hindi mayroon silang pahintulot na pumasok sa bodega.
Incorrect existential negation β use wala rather than hindi mayroon.
β Wala silang pahintulot na pumasok sa bodega.
They do not have permission to enter the storage room.
Denying a known person's presence with hindi
β Hindi si Teresa sa kaniyang mesa ngayon.
Wrong structure for the intended absence β this begins an identity contrast rather than saying Teresa is away.
β Wala si Teresa sa kaniyang mesa ngayon.
Teresa is not at her desk now.
Using hindi for a direct prohibition
β Hindi kayong mag-iwan ng pagkain sa pasilyo.
Incorrect directive β hindi denies a proposition; it does not form a direct negative command.
β Huwag kayong mag-iwan ng pagkain sa pasilyo.
Do not leave food in the hallway. (plural or respectful)
Key Takeaways
English not and do not have must be recast according to Filipino structure. Use hindi to deny events, properties, identities, and relations. Use wala/walang for nonexistence, absence, and lack, including negative possession with linked ang-form pronouns. Use huwag for prohibitions. Switching between hindi and wala changes more than one word: it changes what the clause asserts.
