Bukod dito is a sentence-level additive connector: it presents the next statement as another reason, fact, benefit, drawback, or consideration alongside what has just been said. It is common in organized speech and neutral-to-formal writing. Its contribution is not simply “and.” It tells the listener how to integrate a new proposition into the developing argument.
English besides, in addition, and apart from that overlap with bukod dito, but they do not map onto it mechanically. The Filipino expression points back to prior discourse through dito “here/this point,” while bukod sa introduces an explicit noun phrase or event as its complement.
Core form and coherence relation
| Form | Typical scope and function | Register |
|---|---|---|
| Bukod dito, + clause | Adds a separate proposition to the preceding discourse | neutral to formal |
| Bukod pa rito, + clause | Adds a further point with stronger cumulative force | neutral to formal |
| Bukod sa + noun/event, ... | Names what is being set aside or counted alongside something else | all registers |
| At saka / saka ... | Adds another point in spontaneous conversation | informal |
In its central use, bukod dito has scope over the whole clause that follows. A comma normally separates it from that clause in edited prose. The previous statement remains valid; the new statement is placed beside it rather than presented as its cause or result.
Tahimik ang silid-aklatan tuwing umaga. Bukod dito, maraming mesa malapit sa mga saksakan.
The library is quiet every morning. In addition, there are many tables near the electrical outlets.
Nabawasan na ang pila sa klinika. Bukod pa rito, maaari nang magtakda ng oras sa telepono.
The line at the clinic has become shorter. What is more, appointments can now be scheduled by phone.
The second example uses pa, which profiles the following fact as one more item in an accumulating set. It does not make the claim more certain; it makes the addition more explicit.
bukod dito versus bukod sa
The forms share bukod, but their syntax differs. Bukod dito is self-contained as a discourse frame: dito refers back to the matter already under discussion. Bukod sa requires a following complement, which may be a noun phrase, a pronoun, or a nominalized event.
Bukod dito, magpapadala ang barangay ng nakasulat na paalala bukas.
In addition, the barangay will send a written reminder tomorrow.
Bukod sa nakasulat na paalala, tatawagan din ng barangay ang mga nakatatandang residente.
Besides the written reminder, the barangay will also call the older residents.
In the first sentence, the connector links one complete statement to earlier discourse. In the second, sa nakasulat na paalala explicitly names one measure and contrasts it with another. The enclitic din reinforces the additive reading, but it is not obligatory whenever bukod sa appears.
The complement can also denote an action. Filipino normally packages that action as a noun-like expression rather than copying an English gerund word for word.
Bukod sa pag-aayos ng bubong, nilinis din ng mga boluntaryo ang kanal sa likod ng paaralan.
Besides repairing the roof, the volunteers also cleaned the drain behind the school.
Do not confuse discourse-deictic dito with a literal location. “Beside this chair” is sa tabi ng silyang ito, not bukod dito.
Position, scope, and information flow
The clearest position is at the beginning of a new sentence or clause. This lets readers identify the relation before processing the added point. In longer reports, it can open a paragraph whose entire content elaborates an additional consideration.
Hindi sapat ang ilaw sa tawiran kapag umuulan. Bukod dito, natatakpan ng mga sanga ang karatula sa kanto.
The lighting at the crossing is inadequate when it rains. In addition, branches obscure the sign at the corner.
Here the connector adds a second problem. The negative hindi sapat creates no special restriction: bukod dito can add positive or negative propositions, statements in any aspect, and clauses in any voice. Those grammatical choices belong to the following clause; the connector only manages the relation between discourse units.
It can also frame a question when the speaker is adding a new item to an agenda. The question itself must still have a natural Filipino interrogative structure.
Nakuha na natin ang pahintulot ng may-ari. Bukod dito, may dokumento pa ba tayong kailangang isumite sa munisipyo?
We have already obtained the owner's permission. Besides that, is there another document we still need to submit to the municipality?
In mid-clause position, bukod dito is possible but heavier and less transparent. Edited prose generally favors initial placement. Conversation more often chooses at saka, saka, or dagdag pa rito.
Formal and conversational additions
Compare two natural versions of the same message:
Maayos ang bentilasyon ng bulwagan. Bukod dito, may hiwalay itong pasukan para sa mga tagapagtanghal.
The hall has good ventilation. In addition, it has a separate entrance for the performers. (neutral/formal)
Maayos ang bentilasyon ng bulwagan. At saka, may hiwalay na pasukan ang mga tagapagtanghal.
The hall has good ventilation. And besides, the performers have a separate entrance. (informal)
The facts are comparable, but the interactional effect differs. Bukod dito makes the structure of a presentation visible. At saka sounds like a speaker adding something while holding the conversational floor. On the additive coordination page, saka also joins words and phrases; bukod dito normally links larger stretches of discourse.
Gayundin (formal) can add a parallel statement, especially when two entities or situations behave alike. Dagdag pa rito (neutral/formal) explicitly signals “furthermore.” These are accepted alternatives, but they are not interchangeable in every context: parallelism favors gayundin, while simple accumulation favors bukod dito or dagdag pa rito.
Sasailalim sa pagsusuri ang lumang gusali. Gayundin, susuriin ang katabing tulay bago magsimula ang tag-ulan.
The old building will undergo inspection. Likewise, the adjacent bridge will be inspected before the rainy season begins. (formal)
A connected example
In a recommendation, each additive should contribute a genuinely distinct reason:
Inirerekomenda naming ilipat sa umaga ang pagsasanay. Mas malamig sa bulwagang pampalakasan bago mag-alas-diyes. Bukod dito, wala pang ibang pangkat na gumagamit ng lugar sa oras na iyon. Bukod pa rito, mas maraming magulang ang makapaghahatid sa mga bata bago pumasok sa trabaho.
We recommend moving the practice to the morning. It is cooler in the sports hall before ten. In addition, no other group uses the place at that time. What is more, more parents will be able to bring the children before going to work.
The two connectors create a cumulative case. Repeating them in every sentence, however, would sound mechanical. Cohesion also comes from reference, lexical continuity, and inference—not from inserting a connector before every proposition.
Common Mistakes
Using addition where the relation is consequence
❌ Nasira ang pangunahing tubo. Bukod dito, pinatay muna ang suplay ng tubig.
Incorrect for the intended meaning—the shutdown resulted from the broken pipe; it is not merely another fact.
✅ Nasira ang pangunahing tubo. Kaya pinatay muna ang suplay ng tubig.
The main pipe broke. Therefore, the water supply was temporarily shut off.
Replacing bukod dito with kaya changes the coherence relation from addition to result. See consequence with kaya and tuloy.
Combining the two frames
❌ Bukod dito sa libreng konsultasyon, may diskuwento rin sa mga gamot.
Incorrect—the discourse form bukod dito and the complement-taking form bukod sa have been blended.
✅ Bukod sa libreng konsultasyon, may diskuwento rin sa mga gamot.
Besides the free consultation, there is also a discount on medicines.
Use bukod dito, + clause or bukod sa + complement, not both in the same frame.
Treating bukod dito as a physical location
❌ Ilagay mo ang kahon bukod dito sa aparador.
Incorrect for 'beside this cabinet'—bukod dito is not the ordinary locative expression for physical adjacency.
✅ Ilagay mo ang kahon sa tabi ng aparador na ito.
Put the box beside this cabinet.
Choosing a dictionary synonym without checking the relation
❌ Bukod dito, mali ba ang petsang nakalagay sa resibo?
Awkward if the speaker is correcting or challenging the previous claim rather than adding an agenda item.
✅ Gayunpaman, mali ba ang petsang nakalagay sa resibo?
Nevertheless, isn't the date printed on the receipt wrong?
The corrected version signals a counterexpectation. A connector is not chosen by its English gloss alone; it encodes the speaker's stance toward how the next claim follows from the previous one.
Key Takeaways
- Bukod dito adds a complete new point and normally stands at the beginning of its clause.
- Bukod sa introduces an explicit complement; it is not simply a spelling variant.
- At saka is conversational, while bukod dito is more typical of organized speech and prose.
- The connector does not determine aspect, voice, or participant marking inside its clause.
- Choose it only when the intended relation is accumulation, not cause, result, contrast, or reformulation.
