Bago places one situation earlier than another; pagkatapos places it later. Both may connect clauses, but they do not use identical structures. Bago can directly introduce a predicate, while pagkatapos commonly appears with a linked pronoun and predicate, with ng + noun phrase, or as the independent discourse adverb “afterward.”
English lets before/after introduce a noun, an -ing form, or a full clause with little visible change. Filipino marks those structures more clearly. The form after the connector tells listeners whether they are hearing a complete event, an event nominal, or a discourse sequence.
For other temporal boundaries and their interaction with aspect, see adverbial clauses of time. The event-noun pattern after pagkatapos ng connects with nominalization using pag-.
Core patterns
| Pattern | Meaning | Register/note |
|---|---|---|
| bago + predicate | before an event occurs | neutral |
| bago + noun/time expression | before a reference point | neutral |
| pagkatapos + linked pronoun + predicate | after someone does something | neutral |
| pagkatapos + predicate + ng/ni actor | after a named participant acts | neutral; actor has a genitive-form marker |
| pagkatapos ng + noun/event nominal | after an event or period | neutral |
| matapos + predicate | after completing/after an event | formal or journalistic |
| pagkatapos, + main clause | afterward/next | neutral discourse adverb |
Do not treat pagkatapos as an English preposition that accepts any following sequence. Its complement must be built as a Filipino phrase or clause.
Before an event with bago
Bago umalis si Gemma, sinuri niya kung nakasara ang lahat ng bintana.
Before Gemma left, she checked whether all the windows were closed.
The bago clause comes first and establishes the later boundary. Both actors are explicit, so reference is clear.
Maghugas ka muna ng kamay bago humawak ng pagkain.
Wash your hands first before handling the food.
The actor of humawak is understood as the addressee of the command. Muna presents washing as the preliminary step. English may omit before, but the Filipino connector makes the intended order explicit.
Hindi muna namin ilalabas ang kagamitan bago tumigil ang ulan.
We will not take the equipment outside before the rain stops.
The main negation means the equipment stays inside up to the stopping point. This is different from Bago hindi tumigil ang ulan, which would put negation inside the time clause and is not the intended relation.
Bago can also precede a noun or time expression:
Dumating ang mga boluntaryo bago mag-alas-siyete ng umaga.
The volunteers arrived before seven in the morning.
Here no second clause follows; mag-alas-siyete is the reference time. This is one reason a word-for-word clause rule is insufficient.
After an event with pagkatapos
When the actor of the following predicate is expressed by a short pronoun, it links directly to pagkatapos: pagkatapos ko, pagkatapos mo, pagkatapos niya, pagkatapos namin, and so on.
Pagkatapos kong ihatid ang mga bata sa paaralan, dumiretso ako sa klinika.
After I took the children to school, I went straight to the clinic.
The form kong is ko + -ng, not the pivot pronoun ako. Patient/undergoer voice ihatid keeps ang mga bata as its pivot inside the subordinate clause.
Nagpahinga si Omar pagkatapos niyang ayusin ang sirang estante.
Omar rested after he repaired the broken shelf.
The final clause adds the earlier event after stating the result. Clause order affects presentation, not chronology.
With a full actor after the basic verb, pagkatapos commonly uses an ng/ni form: pagkatapos kumain ng mga bata, pagkatapos dumating ni Lorna. This differs from a full independent actor voice clause such as kumain ang mga bata. Because two adjacent ng phrases can obscure who did what, a linked pronoun or a fuller recast is often clearer.
If the complement is a noun or an event nominal, use pagkatapos ng:
Pagkatapos ng seminar, nagkape muna kami sa tapat ng aklatan.
After the seminar, we had coffee across from the library.
Ibabalik ko ang mga susi pagkatapos ng paglilinis ng silid.
I will return the keys after the room has been cleaned.
Ng seminar and ng paglilinis belong to noun phrases. They do not behave like overt clause actors.
Shared actors and reduction
When the actor is obvious and shared, speakers often omit it after bago or pagkatapos.
Pagkatapos kumain, naglakad kami sa tabing-dagat.
After eating, we walked along the shore.
The natural reading makes kami the people who ate and walked. If another group ate, state it: Pagkatapos kumain nina Mara at Joel, naglakad kami... Reduction is licensed by clear reference, not by an invariant “infinitive” form.
—Kailan natin susuriin ang mga resibo? —Pagkatapos makabalik ni Cora mula sa bangko.
—When will we review the receipts? —After Cora gets back from the bank.
The answer is a temporal fragment. The anticipated return appears in the basic dependent form makabalik, with its actor marked ni Cora; the question supplies the omitted main clause.
Matapos and discourse pagkatapos
Matapos + predicate is common in edited news and formal narration (formal/journalistic). It often corresponds to “after” or “having finished.”
Matapos aprubahan ng lupon ang badyet, inilathala ng kalihim ang pinal na plano.
After the board approved the budget, the secretary published the final plan. (formal)
The patient/undergoer voice predicate marks the approving actor with ng lupon and the approved item as ang badyet. Formal matapos does not remove voice or marker relations.
As a discourse adverb, pagkatapos can stand alone:
Tinapos muna namin ang imbentaryo. Pagkatapos, isinara namin ang bodega.
We finished the inventory first. Afterward, we closed the storeroom.
The comma signals that pagkatapos organizes two independent assertions. No ng is needed because it has no nominal complement.
Aspect and sequence
The connector establishes relative order, while each predicate still presents its own aspect. A subordinate event may be anticipated even when its form looks basic; a completed form may appear when the larger context treats that event as already realized.
Bago matapos ang buwan, mababayaran na namin ang natitirang balanse.
Before the month ends, we will have paid the remaining balance.
The boundary matapos ang buwan is future in context. Contemplated, result-oriented mababayaran na presents payment as complete by that point. Filipino does not need English future marking in both clauses.
Common Mistakes
Using a pivot pronoun directly after pagkatapos
❌ Pagkatapos ako naghugas ng pinggan, nagpahinga ako.
Incorrect — the actor pronoun must be linked to pagkatapos in this construction.
✅ Pagkatapos kong maghugas ng pinggan, nagpahinga ako.
After I washed the dishes, I rested.
Omitting ng before a noun complement
❌ Pagkatapos pulong, bumalik si Irene sa opisina.
Incorrect — the noun pulong requires pagkatapos ng.
✅ Pagkatapos ng pulong, bumalik si Irene sa opisina.
After the meeting, Irene returned to the office.
Copying English completed tense after bago
❌ Bago umalis na si Nardo, tinawagan niya ang drayber.
Incorrect for the intended simple sequence — na incorrectly presents departure as already achieved inside the before frame.
✅ Bago umalis si Nardo, tinawagan niya ang drayber.
Before Nardo left, he called the driver.
Leaving shared reference unclear
❌ Pagkatapos magbayad, ibinigay ni Lena kay Pio ang resibo.
Ambiguous — either Lena or Pio could be understood as the payer.
✅ Pagkatapos magbayad ni Pio, ibinigay sa kaniya ni Lena ang resibo.
After Pio paid, Lena gave him the receipt.
Key Takeaways
- Bago + predicate introduces the later event that serves as a boundary.
- Use pagkatapos ng before a noun/event nominal and pagkatapos kong/niyang... when a linked pronoun names the actor of a following predicate.
- Matapos is a formal or journalistic clause connector; standalone pagkatapos means “afterward.”
- Omit a shared actor only when its identity is clear.
