The Filipino recent perfective presents an event as completed immediately before speech or another reference point. It is conventionally called the kaka- construction, although conservative forms are better analyzed as ka- plus initial reduplication: kabibili, kasusulat, kararating, kaaalis. Leveled kaka- + root forms such as kakabili and kakasulat are also widespread.
The construction has its own participant frame: the actor takes an ng-form such as ko, mo, niya, namin, natin, ninyo, nila, or ni/ng. All unlabelled examples are neutral contemporary Filipino; variant preferences are labelled below.
Core Forms and Variation
| Root | Structure-preserving form | Widespread leveled form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| kain | kakakain | same | has just eaten |
| bili | kabibili | kakabili | has just bought |
| sulat | kasusulat | kakasulat | has just written |
| dating | kararating | kakarating | has just arrived |
| alis | kaaalis | kakaalis | has just left |
| luto | kaluluto | kakaluto | has just cooked |
Both columns occur in modern Filipino. Structure-preserving forms are common in careful descriptions and edited usage; leveled forms are widespread in contemporary speech and writing. Follow a publication's house style, and do not stigmatize an established variant.
Tess has just bought new glasses, so she can now read clearly.
I had just written a reply when the client called. (widespread leveled form)
The Actor Is Not an Ang-Form
Kakagising lang niya, kaya huwag muna tayong maingay.
They have just woken up, so let us not be noisy yet.
Liza and Poldo have just arrived from the province. (leveled form)
The actors are niya and nina Liza at Poldo, not siya and sina Liza at Poldo. A theme or other participant may also appear in an ng-form, so word order and lexical meaning distinguish roles:
Kaluluto lang ni Mara ng sopas para sa mga bata.
Mara has just cooked soup for the children. (structure-preserving form)
Ni Mara is the actor; ng sopas is the food theme. The recent perfective does not simply inherit an ordinary actor-voice ang actor + ng patient frame.
Recent versus Ordinary Completion
Dumating si Raul bago magtanghali.
Raul arrived before noon.
Raul has just arrived, so he is still near the door.
Both events are complete. Ordinary completed dumating gives no special recency. Kararating lang places arrival immediately before the current moment and shifts the actor to ni Raul.
The particle lang is extremely common but not the source of the aspect. It narrows the interval. Formal lamang can replace it in (formal) prose:
Kaaalis pa lamang ng delegasyon nang dumating ang liham mula sa gobernador.
The delegation had only just left when the letter from the governor arrived. (formal)
The past reference point is nang dumating ang liham. Recent perfective means “immediately before the relevant point,” not necessarily “a moment before now.”
Questions and a Short Exchange
—Kakauwi mo lang ba? —Oo, kararating ko lang mula sa terminal.
—Have you just gotten home? —Yes, I have just arrived from the terminal.
Kakauwi is a widespread leveled form. Mo/ko remain ng-form actors, and lang ba forms a natural particle sequence in the question.
Have you only just submitted the application, or was it already yesterday? (structure-preserving form)
The alternative kahapon pa explicitly tests the narrow recency claim.
Negation Reveals a Semantic Limit
The recent perfective asserts completion. To say that an event has not yet occurred, use the appropriate negative aspect construction instead.
The technician has not arrived yet; we are still waiting in the lobby.
Direct hindi pa kararating conflicts with the recent-perfective assertion. A speaker can deny someone else's whole recency claim, but then the denial is metalinguistic:
Hindi totoong kakalipat lang namin dito; dalawang taon na kaming nakatira sa gusaling ito.
It is not true that we have just moved here; we have lived in this building for two years.
The embedded claim is rejected; the moving itself is not necessarily denied.
An Alternative with Katatapos
Katatapos lang + basic verb explicitly says that an event has just been finished and can preserve a voice frame useful for a selected patient.
Berto has just finished repairing the broken water pump.
Compare the compact recent-perfective construction:
Kakaayos lang ni Berto ng bomba, pero tumutulo na naman ito.
Berto has just repaired a pump, but it is leaking again. (widespread leveled form)
The two constructions overlap, but katatapos foregrounds reaching the end of an activity. Do not stack patient suffixes mechanically onto kaka-.
Lexical and Register Limits
High-frequency activities and changes of state readily enter the construction. Stative predicates, fixed modals, and every theoretically possible voice derivative do not automatically form a natural recent perfective. Older grammars also record family-sensitive patterns with pag- for some mag- verbs; many are uncommon in everyday contemporary speech. Verify low-frequency forms rather than manufacturing them.
The recent-perfective foundation gives the basic construction; this page's central advanced point is that recency, actor marking, and variant choice form one package.
Common Mistakes
❌ Kakakain ako lang bago nagsimula ang klase.
Incorrect — the actor of a recent-perfective clause requires an ng-form.
✅ Kakakain ko lang bago nagsimula ang klase.
I had just eaten before the class began.
❌ Kadarating lang ni Raul mula sa pantalan.
Incorrect formation — the dating family requires reduplication.
✅ Kararating lang ni Raul mula sa pantalan.
Raul has just arrived from the port. (structure-preserving form)
❌ Hindi pa niya kakarating sa opisina.
Incorrect for ‘has not arrived yet’ — recent perfective asserts completion and the participant frame is mismatched.
They have not arrived at the office yet because traffic is heavy.
❌ Kakababasahin ko lang ang ulat.
Incorrect stacking — do not combine recent-perfective reduplication mechanically with patient contemplated morphology.
I have just read the report, so the details are still fresh in my mind. (widespread leveled form)
Key Takeaways
- Recent perfective places completion immediately before speech or another reference point.
- The actor takes an ng-form, not an ang-form.
- Structure-preserving and leveled kaka- variants coexist in contemporary Filipino.
- Lang/lamang commonly reinforces the narrow interval but does not create the construction.
- Negated “not yet” meanings use another aspectual construction.
