The Seven Non-Connecting Letters

Seven Persian lettersا د ذ ر ز ژ و—do not connect to the letter that follows them in reading order. Because Persian runs right to left, that means they do not extend a join toward the visual left. They can create a clear gap inside a perfectly ordinary one-word spelling.

This joining behavior is mechanical and register-neutral. It applies in handwriting and type, in casual messages (informal) and edited prose (written-standard/formal) alike. Mastering the seven prevents you from mistaking visual pieces for separate words.

The seven letters

LetterNameTypical valueExample
اalefâ or vowel carrierباران — bârân
دdâldدانشگاه — dâneshgâh
ذzâlzلذت — lezzat
رrerکارگر — kârgar
زzezارزان — arzân
ژzhezhپژوهش — pezhuhesh
وvâvv, u, or oدوست — dust

A compact memory line is alef, dâl, zâl, re, ze, zhe, vâv. Notice the visual families: د/ذ differ by a dot, and ر/ز/ژ share a body with zero, one, or three dots. Learning those families makes the list less arbitrary.

The names of the seven letters that do not connect to the following letter.

💡
In the phrase “non-connecting,” the missing connection is only on one side. These letters can accept a join from the preceding eligible letter on their visual right; they simply cannot continue it to the following letter on their visual left.

Where the join breaks

Persian text is stored and read in logical order. If a non-connecting letter occurs, the connection after it stops:

Logical sequenceConnection resultOne word?
ب + ا + رب joins to ا; ا does not join onward to رYes: بار
ک + ا + ر + گ + را breaks before ر; ر breaks before گYes: کارگر
د + و + س + تد breaks before و; و breaks before س; س joins to تYes: دوست

The first letter of a Persian word appears at the right. Consequently, saying that alef “does not connect on the left” and saying that it “does not connect to the following letter” describe the same visual fact. The second wording is safer when discussing stored text because it does not depend on screen orientation.

باران شدید است.

bârân shadid ast.

The rain is heavy.

این کارگر ماهر است.

in kârgar mâher ast.

This worker is skilled.

In باران, there are multiple visible breaks, yet no ordinary spaces inside the word. In کارگر, the gap after ر does not separate کار from گر; the complete spelling is one lexical word, kârgar “worker.”

A visible gap is not a word boundary

English teaches readers to treat a gap as strong evidence of a space. Persian cannot be segmented that way. Compare these three causes of separation:

CauseExampleUnderlying structure
Non-connecting letterکارگرOne word; no boundary character after ر
ZWNJکتاب‌هاOne orthographic word with a morphological boundary
Ordinary spaceکتاب خوبTwo words

You cannot reliably distinguish the three by measuring the visible width. Fonts, justification, and screen rendering alter spacing. Inspect spelling and morphology: know the non-connectors, learn where Persian writes a true space, and recognize productive ZWNJ patterns.

دوست من امروز آمد.

dust-e man emruz âmad.

My friend came today.

The spelling دوست has internal visual pieces because both د and و block a forward join. It is nevertheless one word. The actual spaces occur after دوست, من, and امروز.

💡
When reading a new word, follow the letters across small internal gaps until you meet an actual word space. The shape of a non-connector is a signal about cursive behavior, not a command to stop reading.

What happens to neighboring shapes

A join break affects the following dual-joining letter too. Because that following letter receives no connection from the non-connector, it may display an initial form if it joins onward, or an isolated form if it does not. This is why “medial letter” and “medial shape” are not synonymous.

In ابر abr “cloud,” ب is the second character of the word, but alef cannot connect to it. ب therefore begins a fresh cursive segment and joins onward to ر. It takes an initial-like shape inside the word. In آب âb “water,” final ب follows alef and receives no join, so it appears isolated even though it is the last character.

ابر‌ها تیره هستند.

abr-hâ tire hastand.

The clouds are dark.

آب سرد است.

âb sard ast.

The water is cold.

These are not exceptions. The contextual form follows real connection opportunities, not a letter’s numerical position inside the word. Review Joining Forms if “initial inside a word” still feels contradictory.

Each non-connector in a natural word

The following examples show that all seven behave normally in everyday vocabulary. A gap immediately after one of those letters comes from its joining behavior, not from an inserted space. The compound لذت‌بخش independently has a standard ZWNJ at its morphological boundary; that later gap has a different cause.

دانشگاه امروز باز است.

dâneshgâh emruz bâz ast.

The university is open today.

این فیلم لذت‌بخش بود.

in film lezzat-bakhsh bud.

This film was enjoyable.

قیمتش ارزان بود.

qeymat-ash arzân bud.

Its price was inexpensive.

این پژوهش تازه است.

in pezhuhesh tâze ast.

This research is new.

The letters ذ and ژ occur less frequently than ا, د, ر, ز, and و, but their joining behavior is identical. Frequency does not create a register restriction: پژوهش is common in academic/formal contexts, while لذت is broadly neutral.

Alef with madda and the same joining rule

آ is alef with madda, used notably for word-initial long â. Its joining behavior follows alef: it does not connect to the following letter. In آمد âmad “came,” آ stands apart from م. Madda changes the vowel information, not the join class. The alef and long â page treats its spelling conditions.

آرش زود آمد.

Ârash zud âmad.

Arash came early.

Common Mistakes

1. Inserting a space at a natural break after alef

❌ من به دا نشگاه رفتم.

Incorrect: the break after alef does not divide the word dâneshgâh.

✅ من به دانشگاه رفتم.

man be dâneshgâh raftam.

I went to the university.

2. Splitting a word after re

❌ آن کا رگر اینجاست.

Incorrect: re breaks the join, but kârgar remains one word.

✅ آن کارگر اینجاست.

ân kârgar injâst.

That worker is here.

3. Forcing a join with a visible extender

❌ باـران شدید است.

Incorrect: alef cannot connect to the following re, and an extender does not change that.

✅ باران شدید است.

bârân shadid ast.

The rain is heavy.

4. Adding a space after zhe

❌ این پ ژوهش تازه است.

Incorrect: zhe creates a visual break after itself, not before itself, and the word has no internal space.

✅ این پژوهش تازه است.

in pezhuhesh tâze ast.

This research is new.

5. Removing a real word space because vâv already creates a gap

❌ اوآمد و رفت.

Incorrect: u and âmad are separate words and still require a true space.

✅ او آمد و رفت.

u âmad va raft.

He or she came and left.

Key Takeaways

  • The seven non-connectors are ا د ذ ر ز ژ و.
  • Each can accept a connection from the preceding eligible letter but cannot connect to the following letter.
  • Their join breaks create visible gaps inside single words; a gap is not automatically a space.
  • A break can cause a later letter to take an initial or isolated shape even in the middle or at the end of a word.
  • Alef with madda, آ, has the same non-connecting behavior as alef.
