Hamza and Eyn in Iranian Persian Spelling

Persian spelling contains two easily confused inheritances from Arabic: hamzaء, a sign that may stand alone or sit on another letter, and eynع, a full alphabetic letter. In modern Iranian pronunciation neither behaves exactly as it does in careful Arabic. They may mark a real glottal interruption or vowel hiatus, but they also preserve the historical identity of an Arabic loan even when casual speech weakens the consonant.

That makes this topic partly systematic and partly lexical. The shape of a hamza seat follows inherited spelling conventions; it is not a phonetic menu in which ئ and ؤ represent different Persian sounds. Pronunciation is developed on Eyn and Hamza in Modern Iranian Speech; this page teaches what the eye and keyboard must preserve.

Hamza can stand alone or take a seat

The same hamza element appears in several encoded letters. The “seat” affects joining and spelling, not the basic identity of the interruption.

FormUnicodeJoining behaviorTypical examples
ءU+0621 ARABIC LETTER HAMZANever joinsجزء، سوء، انشاء
ئU+0626 YEH WITH HAMZA ABOVEJoins like a medial yeh-seat: ئـ، ـئـ، ـئمسئله، هیئت، جرئت
ؤU+0624 WAW WITH HAMZA ABOVEJoins to the preceding letter but not the following oneسؤال، مؤثر، رؤیا
أU+0623 ALEF WITH HAMZA ABOVEAlef-seat; does not join to the following letterتأثیر، مأمور، منشأ

The visible minimal set ء / ئ / ؤ is therefore not three interchangeable decorations. U+0621 is bare hamza, whereas U+0626 and U+0624 are complete letters containing a seat. Replacing one with another can break joining, searching, spell-checking, and dictionary lookup even when an uncareful reader guesses the intended word.

آیا سؤال دیگری دارید؟

âyâ so'âl-e digari dârid?

Do you have another question?

این مسئله راه‌حل ساده‌ای ندارد.

in mas'ale râh-e hall-e sâde-i nadârad.

This problem does not have a simple solution.

💡
Do not choose the seat by asking which Persian vowel you hear today. The modern pronunciation often converges, while spelling preserves the established word. Learn سؤال، مسئله، مسئول as written lexical forms.

Hamza and vowel hiatus

Within many loans, hamza corresponds to a boundary between vowels or to a glottal closure before a vowel. The learner romanization uses an apostrophe only when that break is genuinely pronounced: so'âl, mas'ul, ta'sir, hey'at. The apostrophe is a reading aid, not a character to insert into Persian script.

مسئول فروش فردا تماس می‌گیرد.

mas'ul-e forush fardâ tamâs mi-girad.

The sales manager will call tomorrow.

این تصمیم روی قیمت تأثیر می‌گذارد.

in tasmim ru-ye qeymat ta'sir mi-gozârad.

This decision affects the price.

رؤیای عجیبی دیدم.

ro'yâ-ye ajibi didam.

I had a strange dream.

In fluent Tehran speech, the closure may be light or absent in particular words and environments. That does not automatically license deleting hamza from edited spelling. English speakers face the reverse problem: because English normally leaves glottal transitions unwritten, they may treat Persian hamza as ornamental. It is better understood as an orthographic member of the word whose phonetic force ranges from clear hiatus to historical residue.

Eyn is a letter, not a hamza seat

Eyn is U+0639 and has all four joining forms: isolated ع, initial عـ, medial ـعـ, and final ـع. Hamza does not sit on eyn. In Arabic, ع represents a pharyngeal consonant; ordinary Iranian Persian does not reproduce that Arabic articulation.

In Iranian speech, word-initial eyn usually behaves like an ordinary vowel onset. This learner system therefore writes علی as Ali, not 'Ali, unless a genuinely salient glottal onset is being transcribed. Between vowels or near consonants, an audible interruption can justify an apostrophe: بعد ba'd, شروع shoru', معلوم ma'lum. Actual strength varies with speaker and register.

علی امروز زودتر رسید.

Ali emruz zudtar resid.

Ali arrived earlier today.

بعد از جلسه مستقیم به خانه رفتم.

ba'd az jalase mostaqim be khâne raftam.

After the meeting, I went straight home.

فیلم ساعت نه شروع می‌شود.

film sâ'at-e noh shoru' mi-shavad.

The film starts at nine.

💡
Persian ع is not an instruction to imitate Arabic [ʕ]. Preserve the letter in spelling, learn the Iranian word's actual pronunciation, and use an apostrophe in romanization only where the speech has a real break.

Pronunciation-neutral does not mean dispensable

In a casual pronunciation, deleting a weak glottal gesture may leave no obvious sound corresponding to hamza or eyn. The written letter still distinguishes the conventional word, connects it to a recognizable learned family, and prevents collisions with other spellings. Persian orthography records consonantal history more faithfully than every surface sound.

This is why معلوم remains spelled with ع even for speakers whose ma'lum approaches malum, and why مسئول retains ئ in careful standard writing. A pronunciation-neutral letter is comparable to an etymological letter in English debt: its history explains it, but its current spelling must still be learned.

هنوز معلوم نیست قطار چه ساعتی می‌رسد.

hanuz ma'lum nist qetâr che sâ'ati mi-rasad.

It is still unclear what time the train will arrive.

Accepted variants and editorial choices

Some final-hamza words have both a conservative and a shortened Iranian spelling. انشاء / انشا, املاء / املا, and اعضاء / اعضا are established pairs; the shorter forms are extremely common in modern Iranian prose. When a suffix beginning with a vowel follows, modern writing often uses a yeh bridge from the shortened form, as in اعضای گروه.

Other variation is real but should not be mistaken for total freedom. رؤیا / رویا both appear in current publications, while this guide uses the conservative رؤیا. For “problem,” normalize to مسئله; for “responsible,” normalize to مسئول. Spellings such as مساله and مسول are common informal simplifications but are not this guide's edited standard.

اعضای گروه فردا انتخاب می‌شوند.

a'zâ-ye goruh fardâ entekhâb mi-shavand.

The members of the group will be selected tomorrow.

There is no perfectly predictive shortcut for every hamza seat or accepted variant. A dependable editor checks an authoritative spelling dictionary, then stays consistent within the document. Etymology clarifies the pattern; it does not eliminate memorization.

Common Mistakes

1. Deleting hamza from a standard lexical spelling

❌ مسول فروش امروز اینجا نیست.

Incorrect edited spelling — مسئول retains yeh-seat hamza.

✅ مسئول فروش امروز اینجا نیست.

mas'ul-e forush emruz injâ nist.

The sales manager is not here today.

2. Guessing the wrong hamza seat

❌ این مسؤله را فردا بررسی می‌کنیم.

Incorrect — the established spelling is مسئله, with a yeh-seat hamza after س.

✅ این مسئله را فردا بررسی می‌کنیم.

in mas'ale râ fardâ barrasi mi-konim.

We will examine this issue tomorrow.

3. Replacing eyn with alef because it sounds weak

❌ نتیجه هنوز مالوم نیست.

Incorrect — weak pronunciation does not remove ع from the standard spelling معلوم.

✅ نتیجه هنوز معلوم نیست.

natije hanuz ma'lum nist.

The result is still unknown.

4. Pronouncing initial eyn as an Arabic pharyngeal

❌ علی

'Ali with a pharyngeal consonant

Incorrect Iranian reading — initial ع does not require Arabic [ʕ], and the learner romanization is Ali.

✅ علی الان در راه است.

Ali alân dar râh ast.

Ali is on the way now.

5. Keeping an Arabic keyboard yeh in a derived form

❌ مسئوليت این بخش با من است.

Incorrect Persian encoding — the yeh in مسئوليت is Arabic ي.

✅ مسئولیت این بخش با من است.

mas'uliyat-e in bakhsh bâ man ast.

I am responsible for this section.

Key Takeaways

Hamza may be bare or seated on yeh, waw, or alef; those spellings are lexical, not freely interchangeable phonetic symbols. Eyn is a full joining letter and is not pronounced as Arabic [ʕ] in ordinary Iranian Persian. Preserve established letters even when casual speech weakens them, use the romanization apostrophe only for an audible break, and treat accepted spelling pairs as bounded editorial choices rather than permission to guess.
