Formal Yes-No Questions with آیا

آیا is a clause-initial particle that explicitly marks a yes-no question: آیا این قطار در قم توقف می‌کند؟ “Does this train stop in Qom?” It does not take person marking and it does not move the verb. Everything after it keeps ordinary Persian statement order.

In formal writing, questionnaires, interviews, and careful speech, آیا makes a long question recognizable from its first word. Everyday conversation usually omits it and relies on intonation: این قطار در قم توقف می‌کند؟ Both are grammatical; their register differs.

The pattern

ContextPatternExample shapeRegister
formal yes-no questionآیا + ordinary clause + ؟آیا درخواست ثبت شده است؟(formal/written)
careful spoken questionsameآیا شما موافق هستید؟careful/formal
ordinary spoken questionordinary clause + contourدرخواست ثبت شده؟neutral/informal
negative formal questionآیا + negative clause + ؟آیا پاسخ نرسیده است؟(formal)

English marks a question with auxiliary inversion after whether is absent. Persian آیا resembles a question marker, not an auxiliary: the subject, object, and verb remain in their normal positions.

آیا این قطار در ایستگاه بعد توقف می‌کند؟

âyâ in qatâr dar istgâh-e ba'd tavaqqof mi-konad?

Does this train stop at the next station? (careful/formal)

آیا شما نسخه‌ی اصلی قرارداد را دارید؟

âyâ shomâ noskhe-ye asli-ye qarârdâd râ dârid?

Do you have the original copy of the contract? (polite formal)

آیا نتیجه‌ی این پژوهش قابل تعمیم است؟

âyâ natije-ye in pazhuhesh qâbel-e ta'mim ast?

Can the result of this study be generalized? (academic)

💡
After آیا, say the sentence exactly as a statement until the final question mark and intonation. Do not move the verb toward the beginning.

Why formal writing favors آیا

In speech, the listener hears the question contour. On a page, especially in a long sentence, آیا announces the sentence type before the reader reaches ؟. It is therefore common in research questions, forms, public interviews, and argumentative prose.

آیا افزایش ساعات کاری واقعا به بهبود کیفیت خدمات منجر می‌شود؟

âyâ afzâyesh-e sâ'ât-e kâri vâqe'an be behbud-e keyfiyyat-e khedamât monjar mi-shavad?

Does increasing working hours really lead to improved service quality? (academic research question)

آیا متقاضی پیش از ثبت درخواست شرایط را مطالعه کرده است؟

âyâ motaqâzi pish az sabt-e darkhâst sharâyet râ motâle'e karde ast?

Has the applicant read the conditions before submitting the application? (formal administrative)

In a casual exchange, these forms can sound like an interview or written questionnaire. Omit آیا while keeping the clause intact.

فردا وقت داری با هم ناهار بخوریم؟

fardâ vaqt dâri bâ ham nâhâr be-khorim?

Do you have time to have lunch together tomorrow? (neutral conversation; آیا naturally omitted)

The intonation pattern is explained on Yes-No Questions by Intonation.

Negative questions with آیا

Put the negative form in its ordinary place. آیا does not absorb or replace negation.

آیا هنوز پاسخ رسمی دریافت نشده است؟

âyâ hanuz pâsokh-e rasmi daryâft na-shode ast?

Has no official response been received yet? (formal; negative present perfect passive)

آیا این تصمیم با مقررات جدید مغایرت ندارد؟

âyâ in tasmim bâ moqarrarât-e jadid moghâyerat na-dârad?

Does this decision not conflict with the new regulations? (formal; negative question seeking confirmation)

The second wording can suggest that the writer expects “no conflict.” A neutral information request may be clearer in the positive: آیا این تصمیم با مقررات جدید مغایرت دارد؟

💡
Negative آیا questions can carry an expectation. If a form or survey must remain neutral, ask the positive question and provide yes/no choices.

Answers do not contain آیا

Answer with بله plus a positive predicate or نه plus a negative predicate. آیا belongs only to the question frame.

— آیا جلسه ساعت نه آغاز می‌شود؟ — بله، ساعت نه در سالن اصلی آغاز می‌شود.

— âyâ jalase sâ'at-e noh âghâz mi-shavad? — bale, sâ'at-e noh dar sâlon-e asli âghâz mi-shavad.

— Does the meeting begin at nine? — Yes, it begins at nine in the main hall. (formal exchange)

— آیا برای ورود کارت لازم است؟ — نه، نام شما در فهرست هست.

— âyâ barâ-ye vorud kârt lâzem ast? — na, nâm-e shomâ dar fehrest hast.

— Is a card required for entry? — No, your name is on the list. (polite formal)

آیا is not whether in every environment

At the start of a direct question, آیا marks yes/no force. Embedded “whether” questions require their own reporting construction and are not simply direct questions with punctuation removed. That topic belongs to reported questions; at A1, keep آیا at the start of a complete direct question.

Common Mistakes

1. Inverting the verb after آیا

❌ آیا می‌کند این قطار توقف؟

Incorrect — آیا does not trigger auxiliary or verb movement.

✅ آیا این قطار در قم توقف می‌کند؟

âyâ in qatâr dar Qom tavaqqof mi-konad?

Does this train stop in Qom?

2. Repeating آیا before each phrase

❌ آیا شما آیا وقت دارید؟

Incorrect — one clause-initial آیا marks the whole question.

✅ آیا شما امروز وقت ملاقات دارید؟

âyâ shomâ emruz vaqt-e molâqât dârid?

Do you have an appointment today?

3. Keeping آیا in the answer

❌ آیا بله، آماده هستم.

Incorrect — آیا introduces a question, not an affirmative answer.

✅ بله، برای مصاحبه آماده هستم.

bale, barâ-ye mosâhebe âmâde hastam.

Yes, I am ready for the interview.

4. Using formal آیا for a casual invitation

✅ آیا مایل هستید فردا با هم قهوه بنوشیم؟

âyâ mâyel hastid fardâ bâ ham qahve be-nushim?

Would you like us to have coffee together tomorrow? (grammatical formal invitation; needlessly distant between close friends)

✅ فردا بریم قهوه بخوریم؟

fardâ berim qahve be-khorim?

Shall we go have coffee tomorrow? (informal, regional: Tehran)

Key Takeaways

  • آیا appears once at the beginning of a direct yes-no question.
  • The rest of the clause keeps ordinary Persian word order.
  • It is especially useful in formal writing, questionnaires, interviews, and careful speech.
  • Conversation normally omits it and uses intonation.
  • Negation stays on the predicate, and answers use بله/نه, not آیا.
