The letter و (vâv) has several jobs in Iranian Persian. It can be the consonant v, the vowel u, the diphthong ow, or part of a historical spelling in which no v is pronounced at all. In the separate word و “and,” it also alternates between careful va and conversational -o.
There is no complete shape-only algorithm. Position supplies useful clues, but vocabulary and context make the final decision. This is the same basic problem English readers solve when ow differs in snow and cow—except that Persian’s unpointed script leaves even more work to lexical knowledge. Review the letter’s joining behavior on lam, mim, nun, vâv, he, and ye.
The four main readings
| Value | Typical environment | Examples | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| v | word-initially or between vowels; also in many clusters | وارد vâred, هوا havâ, ورزش varzesh | all registers |
| u | vowel nucleus, often between consonants | دوست dust, نور nur, زود zud | all registers |
| ow | lexically specified diphthong | نو now, روشن rowshan, دولت dowlat | standard Iranian |
| silent historical vâv | mainly in the inherited sequence خو before a following vowel letter | خواب khâb, خواهر khâhar, خواندن khândan | standard Iranian; not universal across Persian varieties |
The “typical environment” column narrows the possibilities; it does not replace knowing the word. دور alone can be dur “far” or dowr “round, turn, period.”
Consonantal v
When و begins a normal Iranian Persian word, v is the strong default. Between vowels it is also commonly consonantal. Persian v is labiodental: the lower lip approaches the upper teeth, as in English very. Neutral Iranian Persian does not use English /w/ here.
وارد اتاق شدم.
vâred-e otâq shodam.
I entered the room.
هوا امروز گرمتر است.
havâ emruz garm-tar ast.
The weather is warmer today.
آخر هفته ورزش میکنیم.
âkhar-e hafte varzesh mi-konim.
We exercise on the weekend.
Long u
As a vowel letter, و commonly represents u, a high back rounded vowel. Keep it steady rather than turning it into English you or the shorter vowel many English speakers use in book. A preceding consonant normally begins the same syllable.
دوستم زود رسید.
dust-am zud resid.
My friend arrived early.
نور اتاق کم است.
nur-e otâq kam ast.
The room does not have much light.
امروز خیلی شلوغ بود.
emruz kheyli sholugh bud.
It was very crowded today.
Visible و does not identify its value by itself: امروز ends -ruz, while شلوغ has an unwritten short o in its first syllable and written و for u in its second. Learn the pronunciation and spelling as one lexical package.
The diphthong ow
For ow, the tongue moves from short o toward w. It is one syllable, not two. Some speakers and styles vary in the exact degree of movement, but the contrast with u remains lexically important.
این کفش هنوز نو است.
in kafsh hanuz now ast.
These shoes are still new.
چراغ را روشن کن.
cherâgh râ rowshan kon.
Turn on the light.
دولت نتیجه را اعلام کرد.
dowlat natije râ e'lâm kard.
The government announced the result. (formal/news register)
The (formal/news) frequency of دولت does not cause its pronunciation; ow is part of the word. Register labels describe where an example is common, not a different sound value invented by the sentence.
A genuine unpointed ambiguity: دور
The same visible word دور supports two established pronunciations. Only context selects the vowel:
ایستگاه از اینجا دور است.
istgâh az injâ dur ast.
The station is far from here.
یک دور دیگر بازی کنیم.
yek dowr-e digar bâzi konim.
Let’s play one more round.
No amount of staring at و resolves this pair. Syntax and meaning do: an adjective after ایستگاه is dur “far,” while the countable noun after یک is dowr “round.” This is why a dictionary lists pronunciations, not merely spellings.
Silent historical vâv after kh
In a small, high-frequency inherited set beginning خو, modern Iranian Persian does not pronounce consonantal v. The spelling preserves an older khw- sequence: خواب khâb, خواهر khâhar, خواستن khâstan, and خواندن khândan. This is genuinely arbitrary for a beginner and must be memorized.
خواهرم هنوز خواب است.
khâhar-am hanuz khâb ast.
My sister is still asleep.
میخواهم این کتاب را بخوانم.
mi-khâham in ketâb râ bekhânam.
I want to read this book.
Do not generalize “خو means silent و.” In خود khod and خوش khosh, و participates in short o. In the Arabic-derived خواص khavâs “the elite; special properties,” v is pronounced.
این ماده خواص متفاوتی دارد.
in mâdde khavâs-e motefâveti dârad.
This substance has different properties. (academic)
The word و “and”
As a separate conjunction, و is normally va in (formal) and deliberate (careful-spoken) reading. In everyday Tehran speech (informal; regional: Tehran) it commonly cliticizes as -o after the preceding word. That conversational o is not the lexical ow of نو.
چای و قهوه موجود است.
chây va qahve mowjud ast.
Tea and coffee are available. (careful-spoken standard)
من چای و قهوه میخوام.
man chây-o qahve mi-khâm.
I want tea and coffee. (informal; regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Reading every و as v
❌ دوستم زود رسید.
dvst-am zvd resid
Incorrect — both lexical vowel letters represent u here.
✅ دوستم زود رسید.
dust-am zud resid.
My friend arrived early.
2. Reading initial و as English w
❌ وارد شدم.
wâred shodam
Incorrect in neutral Iranian Persian — initial و is v.
✅ وارد شدم.
vâred shodam.
I entered.
3. Pronouncing historical vâv in خواب
❌ خوابم میآید.
khvâb-am mi-âyad
Incorrect in standard Iranian Persian — the و of خواب is silent.
✅ خوابم میآید.
khâb-am mi-âyad.
I am getting sleepy.
4. Silencing v in خواص by false analogy
❌ خواص این ماده مهم است.
khâs-e in mâdde mohem ast
Incorrect — خواص is khavâs; it is not a member of the silent-vâv family.
✅ خواص این ماده مهم است.
khavâs-e in mâdde mohem ast.
The properties of this substance are important.
5. Guessing دور without context
❌ یک دور دیگر
yek dur-e digar
Incorrect for ‘one more round’ — the noun دور is pronounced dowr here.
✅ یک دور دیگر
yek dowr-e digar
one more round
Key Takeaways
Read و as consonantal v, vowel u, diphthong ow, or silent historical vâv according to the word and its context. Use position as a clue, memorize the common خوا- family, protect pronounced-v exceptions such as خواص, and let sentence meaning disambiguate homographs such as دور.
