English as can describe a role, a comparison, or a cause, while instead of describes replacement. Persian keeps two important meanings clearly apart: به جای be jâ-ye means “instead of/in place of,” whereas به عنوان be onvân-e means “as/in the capacity of.”
Both end in a noun linked by ezâfe to their complement. جای is the ezâfe-linked form of جا: after final ا, Persian writes ی and pronounces jâ-ye. Consonant-final عنوان carries audible but normally unwritten ezâfe.
Decision table
| Meaning | Choose | Question answered | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| substitution | به جای X | what replaces X? | neutral |
| role/capacity | به عنوان X | in what role? | neutral to formal |
| alternative action | به جای اینکه ... | what happened rather than what? | neutral |
| classification/use | به عنوان X استفاده کردن | used as what? | formal-neutral |
امروز به جای ماشین با مترو آمدم.
emruz be jâ-ye mâshin bâ metro âmadam.
Today I came by metro instead of by car. (neutral standard)
او به عنوان مترجم در جلسه شرکت کرد.
u be onvân-e motarjem dar jalase sherkat kard.
He or she attended the meeting as an interpreter. (formal-neutral)
Substitution with به جای
The complement names the expected, displaced, or forgone option. It may be a person, object, method, time, or action.
میتوانی به جای من در جلسه یادداشت برداری؟
mi-tavâni be jâ-ye man dar jalase yâddâsht bardâri?
Can you take notes at the meeting in my place? (careful spoken standard)
برای این غذا به جای کره از روغن زیتون استفاده کردم.
barâ-ye in ghazâ be jâ-ye kare az rowghan-e zeytun estefâde kardam.
For this dish, I used olive oil instead of butter. (neutral standard)
به جایش “instead/in its place” can stand without an overt complement when the alternative is known. The clitic attaches to جای and does not strand the compound preposition.
قهوه نداشتند؛ به جایش چای آوردند.
qahve nadâshtand; be jâ-yash chây âvardand.
They had no coffee, so they brought tea instead. (neutral standard)
The same no-stranding principle applies to topic phrases such as دربارهی آن; compare the structure on در مورد and دربارهی.
Clausal replacement
For an action or proposition, use به جای اینکه + finite clause. Persian does not generally put a bare conjugated clause directly after جای.
به جای اینکه عصبانی شوی، اول به حرفش گوش کن.
be jâ-ye in-ke asabâni shavi, avval be harf-ash gush kon.
Instead of getting angry, listen to what he or she says first. (neutral standard)
An infinitive or nominalization is also possible when natural: به جای بحث کردن “instead of arguing.” The full finite pattern is useful when the embedded action needs its own subject or tense.
Role and capacity with به عنوان
به عنوان does not replace someone. It assigns a role, official capacity, label, example, or function. It is especially common with کار کردن، انتخاب کردن، معرفی کردن، شناختن، استفاده کردن. Its complement is normally nominal; causal English as does not license به عنوان اینکه.
مریم را به عنوان نمایندهی گروه انتخاب کردند.
maryam râ be onvân-e namâyande-ye goruh entekhâb kardand.
They chose Maryam as the group's representative. (formal-neutral)
از این اتاق به عنوان انبار استفاده میکنند.
az in otâq be onvân-e anbâr estefâde mi-konand.
They use this room as a storeroom. (formal-neutral)
این تجربه را به عنوان شکست نمیبینم.
in tajrobe râ be onvân-e shekast nemi-binam.
I do not regard this experience as a failure. (formal-neutral)
English “as” is not one Persian preposition
“She works as an engineer” uses به عنوان. “She came instead of the engineer” uses به جای. Comparative “as tall as” and causal “as it was late” require entirely different grammar; translating every as with به عنوان produces errors.
چون دیر شده بود، تاکسی گرفتیم.
chun dir shode bud, tâksi gereftim.
As it was late, we took a taxi. (causal as; not به عنوان)
A short exchange
امروز نیما مدیر جلسه است؟
emruz nimâ modir-e jalase ast?
Is Nima chairing the meeting today? (careful spoken standard)
نه، سارا به جای او میآید و به عنوان مدیر جلسه صحبت میکند.
na, sârâ be jâ-ye u mi-âyad va be onvân-e modir-e jalase sohbat mi-konad.
No, Sara is coming in his place and will speak as the meeting chair. (careful spoken standard)
One person replaces Nima; that same person acts in the role of chair. The contrast is visible in a single connected context.
Common Mistakes
1. Using به عنوان for replacement
❌ سارا به عنوان نیما به جلسه آمد.
as straightforward replacement rather than role or impersonation
Incorrect for replacement — this says Sara came in the capacity of Nima.
✅ سارا به جای نیما به جلسه آمد.
sârâ be jâ-ye nimâ be jalase âmad.
Sara came to the meeting instead of Nima.
2. Omitting ezâfe after عنوان
❌ به عنوان مدیر کار میکند.
be onvân modir kâr mi-konad
Incorrect pronunciation — عنوان links to the role noun with ezâfe.
✅ به عنوان پزشک کار میکند.
be onvân-e pezeshk kâr mi-konad.
He or she works as a physician.
3. Adding را after the complement
❌ به جای ماشین را با مترو آمدم.
Incorrect — ماشین is the complement of به جای, not a direct object.
✅ به جای ماشین با اتوبوس آمدم.
be jâ-ye mâshin bâ otobus âmadam.
I came by bus instead of by car.
4. Putting a finite clause directly after جای
❌ به جای عصبانی شوی، سؤال کن.
Incorrect — a finite alternative clause needs اینکه.
✅ به جای اینکه عصبانی شوی، سؤال کن.
be jâ-ye in-ke asabâni shavi, so'âl kon.
Instead of getting angry, ask a question.

- به عنوان introduces a role, capacity, label, or function.
- Both require ezâfe before a nominal complement.
