Thanks, Apologies, and Courtesy

Iranian Persian courtesy is organized by sequence and social force. لطفا accompanies a request, خیلی ممنون acknowledges a benefit, خواهش می‌کنم answers thanks or invites, and ببخشید gets attention, requests repetition, or apologizes. Position in the exchange determines the real job.

These chunks require appropriate verb endings and proportionate tone. لطفا در را ببندید is polite to an unfamiliar adult; لطفا در را ببند keeps an intimate singular verb. The productive imperative system is treated elsewhere; this page teaches which courtesy frame surrounds it.

One chunk can perform several actions. Memorize an exchange, not an English gloss.

لطفا Marks the Request

لطفا can precede a full request or follow a short service noun phrase. It does not need to occupy one rigid sentence position, but it should clearly scope over the requested action.

لطفا این فرم را تا ظهر به بخش مالی تحویل بدهید.

lotfan in form râ tâ zohr be bakhsh-e mâli tahvil be-dahid.

Please deliver this form to the finance department by noon. (polite standard request)

یک بلیت رفت‌وبرگشت برای اصفهان، لطفا.

yek belit-e raft-o-bargasht barâ-ye Esfahân, lotfan.

A return ticket to Isfahan, please. (polite service request; elliptical noun phrase)

لطفا وقتی رسیدی یه پیام بده که نگران نشم.

lotfan vaqti residi ye peyâm bede ke negarân na-sham.

Please send a message when you arrive so I don’t worry. (informal singular request)

The ending, not لطفا, chooses the relationship: بدهید is polite/plural, بده familiar singular. English speakers often focus on please and overlook this agreement contrast.

In signs and forms, لطفا may introduce an impersonal instruction. It remains polite in orientation, though a long list of commands can still feel institutional.

💡
Use لطفا to label the requested action, then check the verb ending separately. Courtesy vocabulary never neutralizes a mismatched تو/شما choice.

ممنون and متشکرم Acknowledge a Benefit

ممنون is the broad everyday default. خیلی ممنون adds warmth; ممنونم makes the first-person relation explicit. A following که clause names the helpful act. متشکرم is more deliberate and often combines with از + noun phrase in professional or formal thanks.

خیلی ممنون که چمدانم را تا ماشین آوردید.

kheyli mamnun ke chamedân-am râ tâ mâshin âvardid.

Thank you very much for carrying my suitcase to the car. (polite standard)

ممنونم؛ آدرسی که فرستادید خیلی دقیق بود.

mamnun-am; âdresi ke ferestâdid kheyli daqiq bud.

Thank you; the address you sent was very precise. (polite everyday speech)

از راهنمایی روشن و صبورانه‌ی شما بسیار متشکرم.

az râhnamâyi-ye rowshan o saburâne-ye shomâ besyâr motashakker-am.

I am very grateful for your clear and patient guidance. (formal/polite)

Informal urban مرسی is common, but it is not required for natural speech. ممنون works from friendly conversation to polite service encounters. A very large favor may call for a reason, acknowledgment of effort, or reciprocal action rather than simply repeating خیلی.

خواهش می‌کنم Is Sequentially Ambiguous

After thanks, خواهش می‌کنم means “you’re welcome / not at all.” Before an invitation it means “please, go ahead.” Before a disputed request it can sound polite but firm. The preceding and following turns disambiguate it.

— ممنون که صبر کردید. — خواهش می‌کنم، عجله‌ای ندارم.

— mamnun ke sabr kardid. — khâhesh mi-konam, ajale-i na-dâram.

— Thank you for waiting. — You’re welcome; I’m not in a hurry. (polite response pair)

خواهش می‌کنم بنشینید؛ مدیر تا چند دقیقه‌ی دیگر می‌آید.

khâhesh mi-konam beneshinid; modir tâ chand daqiqe-ye digar mi-âyad.

Please sit down; the manager will arrive in a few minutes. (polite invitation)

خواهش می‌کنم اجازه بدهید توضیحم را کامل کنم.

khâhesh mi-konam ejâze be-dahid towzih-am râ kâmel konam.

Please let me finish my explanation. (polite but firm request)

English welcome creates a dangerous false friend. خوش آمدید welcomes an arrival; it does not answer thanks. The response chunk is خواهش می‌کنم.

ببخشید Opens, Repairs, or Requests Repetition

Turn-initial ببخشید can attract attention before a question. After a minor offense it is an apology. With a clarification clause, it asks the other person to repeat or explain. Polite/plural ببخشید is the safe default with strangers; familiar singular ببخش belongs to an intimate relationship.

ببخشید، می‌دانید داروخانه تا چه ساعتی باز است؟

be-bakhshid, mi-dânid dârukhâne tâ che sâ'ati bâz ast?

Excuse me, do you know until what time the pharmacy is open? (polite attention-getter)

ببخشید که دیر جواب دادم؛ امروز تمام روز جلسه داشتم.

be-bakhshid ke dir javâb dâdam; emruz tamâm-e ruz jalse dâshtam.

I’m sorry I replied late; I was in meetings all day today. (polite apology with explanation)

ببخشید، جمله‌ی آخر را نشنیدم؛ می‌شود تکرار کنید؟

be-bakhshid, jomle-ye âkhar râ na-shenidam; mi-shavad tekrâr konid?

Sorry, I didn’t hear the last sentence; could you repeat it? (polite repair request)

For serious harm, one ببخشید may be too small. A fuller apology identifies the act, accepts responsibility, and offers repair. The complete progression is taught on Apologizing and Repairing.

متأسفم: Sympathy or Regret

متأسفم can express sympathy about bad news without claiming responsibility. It can also introduce an apology, but context must show whether the speaker caused the problem.

خیلی متأسفم که سفرتان لغو شد؛ امیدوارم زود بلیت دیگری پیدا کنید.

kheyli mota'assef-am ke safar-etân laghv shod; omidvâr-am zud belit-e digari peydâ konid.

I’m very sorry your trip was canceled; I hope you find another ticket soon. (sympathy, not admission of fault)

متأسفم؛ من زمان جلسه را اشتباه نوشتم و همین الان اطلاعیه را اصلاح می‌کنم.

mota'assef-am; man zamân-e jalse râ eshtebâh neveshtam va hamin alân ettelâ'iye râ eslâh mi-konam.

I’m sorry; I wrote the meeting time incorrectly, and I’m correcting the notice right now. (responsible formal-neutral apology)

The second example adds the responsible من, names the error, and promises repair. Courtesy is an interactional structure, not a magic word.

Position and Tone

Sentence-final لطفا can make a short service request sound compact and conventional. Repeating it after every clause can sound impatient. A turn-initial ببخشید prepares an interruption; sentence-final ببخشید usually looks back at an offense.

دو فنجان چای کم‌رنگ، لطفا؛ یکی هم بدون قند.

do fenjân chây-e kam-rang, lotfan; yeki ham bedun-e qand.

Two cups of weak tea, please; one without sugar. (polite café order)

💡
For a request that costs the listener time or effort, build a three-part frame: brief reason, feasible request, and acknowledgment. Persian politeness is distributed across the turn.

Two Complete Exchanges

— ببخشید، لطفا این صندلی را کمی جلو می‌برید؟ — حتما. اینجا خوب است؟ — بله، خیلی ممنون. — خواهش می‌کنم.

— be-bakhshid, lotfan in sandali râ kami jelo mi-barid? — hatman. injâ khub ast? — bale, kheyli mamnun. — khâhesh mi-konam.

— Excuse me, could you move this chair forward a little? — Certainly. Is this good? — Yes, thank you very much. — You’re welcome. (polite service exchange)

— ببخش که پیامتو دیر دیدم. — اشکالی نداره. — ممنون که منتظر موندی؛ الان راه می‌افتم.

— be-bakhsh ke peyâm-et-o dir didam. — eshkâli na-dâre. — mamnun ke montazer mundi; alân râh mi-oftam.

— Sorry I saw your message late. — No problem. — Thanks for waiting; I’m leaving now. (informal, regional: Tehran)

Common Mistakes

1. Using خوش آمدید for “you’re welcome”

⚠️ — از کمکتان ممنونم. — خوش آمدید.

— az komak-etân mamnun-am. — khosh âmadid.

— Thank you for your help. — Welcome. Both chunks are grammatical, but خوش آمدید welcomes an arrival and does not answer thanks.

✅ — از وقتی که گذاشتید ممنونم. — خواهش می‌کنم، خوشحال شدم که کمک کردم.

— az vaqti ke gozâshtid mamnun-am. — khâhesh mi-konam, khoshhâl shodam ke komak kardam.

— Thank you for the time you gave me. — You’re welcome; I was happy to help. (natural reply pair)

2. Using متأسفم to get a stranger’s attention

⚠️ متأسفم، ایستگاه مترو کجاست؟

mota'assef-am, istgâh-e metro kojâ-st?

I’m sorry, where is the metro station? The sentence is understandable, but متأسفم expresses regret rather than the ordinary attention-getting ‘excuse me.’

✅ ببخشید، نزدیک‌ترین ایستگاه مترو کجاست؟

be-bakhshid, nazdik-tarin istgâh-e metro kojâ-st?

Excuse me, where is the nearest metro station? (polite question to a stranger)

3. Letting لطفا hide wrong agreement

❌ شما لطفا اینجا بشین.

Incorrect in the intended respectful request — شما requires a polite/plural verb such as بنشینید, not familiar singular بشین.

✅ شما لطفا اینجا بنشینید تا نوبتتان برسد.

shomâ lotfan injâ beneshinid tâ nowbat-etân beresad.

Please sit here until your turn comes. (polite standard)

4. Using a tiny apology after consequential harm

⚠️ ببخشید، اطلاعات شما را اشتباهی برای دیگران فرستادم.

be-bakhshid, ettelâ'ât-e shomâ râ eshtebâhi barâ-ye digarân ferestâdam.

Sorry, I accidentally sent your information to others. Grammatically valid, but incomplete as a repair after a serious privacy breach.

✅ صمیمانه عذر می‌خواهم؛ اطلاعات شما را اشتباهی فرستادم، به گیرندگان اطلاع دادم و برای حذف آن اقدام کرده‌ام.

samimâne ozr mi-khâham; ettelâ'ât-e shomâ râ eshtebâhi ferestâdam, be girandegân ettelâ' dâdam va barâ-ye hazf-e ân eqdâm karde-am.

I sincerely apologize; I sent your information by mistake, notified the recipients, and have taken action to have it deleted. (formal accountable apology)

Key Takeaways

  • لطفا accompanies a request, but person agreement and burden determine much of its politeness.
  • ممنون/خیلی ممنون are everyday thanks; متشکرم is more deliberate and often formal-neutral.
  • خواهش می‌کنم means “you’re welcome” after thanks and “please/go ahead” before an invitation or request.
  • ببخشید gets attention, apologizes, or opens repair; متأسفم expresses regret or sympathy.
  • Match each chunk to its position in the exchange and scale a serious apology beyond one formula.
