Pluralizing Nouns after Numbers

After a cardinal number, a Persian counted noun normally stays morphologically singular: سه کتاب, پنج پنجره, ده دانشجو. English marks plurality twice—once with the number and again with the noun ending—but Persian lets the numeral carry the cardinality. Adding ـها creates the characteristic transfer error سه کتاب‌ها.

This rule concerns the form of the directly counted noun. It does not mean that the referents are singular, that every verb must be singular, or that Persian lacks plural marking elsewhere. A demonstrative, adjective, counter, measure word, and specific-object marker can all occur around the phrase without changing the core number + singular-noun pattern.

Find the Directly Counted Noun

The neutral sequence is number + noun. A demonstrative precedes the number, an adjective follows the noun through ezâfe, and را follows the complete direct object.

برای مهمان‌ها چهار صندلی راحت کنار پنجره گذاشتیم.

barâ-ye mehmân-hâ chahâr sandali-ye râhat kenâr-e panjare gozâshtim.

We put four comfortable chairs by the window for the guests. (neutral standard)

این ۳ پرونده‌ی محرمانه را به بایگانی برگردانید.

in se parvande-ye mahramâne râ be bâyegâni bar-gardânid.

Return these three confidential files to the archive. (formal instruction)

Neither صندلی nor پرونده takes ـها. The adjective also has no plural agreement. Persian adjectives remain invariant.

تا and نفر Package the Count

Conversational تا can make individual item-counting explicit: سه تا سیب. It is common in everyday speech and informal messages, but usually omitted from concise formal inventories. It does not license a plural noun after it.

نفر counts people: سه نفر مهندس. The following profession or role remains singular because نفر already packages the human count. Plain سه مهندس is also correct; نفر is useful when the human headcount itself matters.

برای راه سه تا بطری آب بردار.

barâ-ye râh se tâ botri-ye âb bardâr.

Take three bottles of water for the road. (conversational standard)

پنج نفر کارشناس درخواست‌ها را بررسی کردند.

panj nafar kârshenâs darkhâst-hâ râ barrasi kardand.

Five specialists reviewed the applications. (formal-neutral; precise human count)

💡
The noun after a number names the category, not a singular real-world individual. The number supplies plurality to the whole phrase, so a visible plural suffix is unnecessary.

Measures Keep the Unit Singular Too

English says “three kilos of rice”; neutral Persian says سه کیلو برنج. Both the unit and measured substance stay in their base forms. Direct measures normally have no ezâfe between the unit and substance.

برای مهمانی دو کیلو برنج ایرانی خریدیم.

barâ-ye mehmâni do kilo berenj-e irâni kharidim.

We bought two kilos of Iranian rice for the party. (neutral standard)

شش متر پارچه‌ی سفید برای پرده کافی است.

shesh metr pârche-ye sefid barâ-ye parde kâfi ast.

Six meters of white fabric is enough for the curtain. (neutral standard)

The adjective ایرانی modifies برنج, not کیلو; سفید modifies پارچه. Hear the later ezâfe without inserting English of after the measure. The full distinction appears on Measure Phrases without a General Classifier.

Noun Form and Verb Agreement Are Separate

The counted noun remains singular in shape, but the verb agrees with the referents according to animacy, individuation, and register. Counted human subjects strongly favor plural agreement: سه پرستار رسیدند. Inanimate counted subjects often take singular agreement in formal prose, while plural agreement is also current when separate objects act as individuated participants.

هفت داوطلب برای مصاحبه به دفتر آمدند.

haft dâvtalab barâ-ye mosâhebe be daftar âmadand.

Seven applicants came to the office for interviews. (neutral standard; human plural agreement)

چهار دستگاه تازه برای آزمایشگاه سفارش داده شده است.

chahâr dastgâh-e tâze barâ-ye âzmâyeshgâh sefâresh dâde shode ast.

Four new machines have been ordered for the laboratory. (formal; inanimate singular agreement)

Do not look at the lack of ـها and conclude that the verb must be singular. Morphological number inside the noun phrase and semantic agreement at the clause level are distinct decisions.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying the English plural suffix after a number

❌ برای جلسه شش صندلی‌ها لازم داریم.

Incorrect — the cardinal number already supplies plurality, so صندلی remains singular.

✅ برای جلسه شش صندلی اضافه لازم داریم.

barâ-ye jalse shesh sandali-ye ezâfe lâzem dârim.

We need six extra chairs for the meeting.

2. Pluralizing both noun and adjective

❌ سه کتاب‌های جدیدها روی میز بود.

Incorrect — neither the counted noun nor its adjective takes plural marking in this phrase.

✅ سه کتاب جدید روی میز کنار لپ‌تاپ بود.

se ketâb-e jadid ru-ye miz-e kenâr-e laptâp bud.

Three new books were on the table beside the laptop. (neutral standard)

3. Omitting written ezâfe after a counted noun ending in ه

❌ دو پنجره بزرگ رو به حیاط باز می‌شود.

Incorrect standard spelling for ‘two large windows’ — پنجره requires ه‌ی before بزرگ.

✅ دو پنجره‌ی بزرگ اتاق رو به حیاط باز می‌شود.

do panjare-ye bozorg-e otâq ru be hayât bâz mi-shavad.

The room’s two large windows open onto the courtyard. (formal-neutral inanimate agreement)

4. Treating تا as obligatory or pluralizing after it

❌ در صورت‌جلسه پنج تا پیشنهادها ثبت شد.

Incorrect formal phrasing — تا is needlessly conversational here, and پیشنهاد must remain singular after پنج.

✅ در صورت‌جلسه پنج پیشنهاد عملی ثبت شد.

dar surat-jalse panj pishnehâd-e amali sabt shod.

Five practical proposals were recorded in the minutes. (formal)

5. Using نفر to count a nonhuman noun

❌ دو نفر دوچرخه جلوی ایستگاه مانده است.

Incorrect — نفر is a human counter and cannot count bicycles.

✅ دو دوچرخه کنار ورودی ایستگاه قفل شده است.

do docharkhe kenâr-e vorudi-ye istgâh qofl shode ast.

Two bicycles are locked beside the station entrance. (formal-neutral inanimate agreement)

6. Pluralizing a measure unit and inserting English of

❌ سه کیلوها از برنج برای شام بپز.

Incorrect — direct measure syntax uses singular کیلو and no preposition corresponding to English ‘of.’

✅ برای شام سه کیلو برنج در قابلمه‌ی بزرگ بپز.

barâ-ye shâm se kilo berenj dar qâblame-ye bozorg bepaz.

Cook three kilos of rice for dinner in the large pot.

7. Confusing a counted phrase with a possessive phrase

کتاب‌های سه دانشجو is grammatical, but it means “the books of three students.” It does not mean “three books.”

✅ کتاب‌های سه دانشجو روی قفسه جا مانده بود.

ketâb-hâ-ye se dâneshju ru-ye qafase jâ mânde bud.

The books belonging to three students had been left on the shelf. (grammatical possessive reading)

✅ سه کتاب درسی روی همان قفسه جا مانده بود.

se ketâb-e darsi ru-ye hamân qafase jâ mânde bud.

Three textbooks had been left on that shelf. (intended counted reading)

💡
Word order distinguishes cardinality from possession: سه کتاب counts books; کتاب‌های سه دانشجو begins with a plural head and then identifies its possessors.

Key Takeaways

  • A noun directly counted by a cardinal normally remains singular.
  • تا is a conversational item counter; نفر counts people; neither triggers noun pluralization.
  • Measure units remain singular, and direct measures normally omit ezâfe between unit and substance.
  • Adjectives follow the singular counted noun and do not agree for number.
  • Choose subject-verb agreement by animacy, individuation, and register—not from the noun’s visible suffix.
