All three expressions can answer “why?”, but they do not build the answer in the same way. چون introduces a finite reason clause and is the broadest choice in conversation and neutral prose. زیرا also introduces a finite clause, but presents it as an explicit, planned explanation (formal). به دلیلِ is a prepositional expression followed most directly by a noun phrase: به دلیلِ باران “because of the rain.”
English often lets because cover both a clause and a phrase. Persian makes the structural choice visible, so first decide whether the cause is a proposition with its own verb or a packaged noun phrase.
The Decision Tree
- Does the reason have a finite verb? Choose چون for neutral speech/writing; choose زیرا when the explanatory link should sound formal and explicit.
- Is the cause already packaged as a noun phrase? Choose به دلیلِ + noun phrase.
- Do you need به دلیل before a full clause? Use established به این دلیل که or به دلیل اینکه, especially in formal prose.
- Is the reason a conversational response or justification? Prefer چون; زیرا can sound like a written explanation read aloud.
- Is the sentence already nominally dense? A finite چون-clause may be clearer than another long به دلیلِ phrase.
| Choice | Complement | Typical register | Information effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| چون | finite clause | neutral; conversational to written | states a direct reason |
| زیرا | finite clause | formal/academic | signals an explicit justification |
| به دلیلِ | noun phrase | neutral-formal to administrative | packages the cause as a circumstance |
چون: the Broad Finite-Clause Choice
چون can precede or follow the main clause. An initial reason frames what follows; a final reason often sounds like an answer or justification. Its finite verb keeps tense, aspect, negation, and an overt subject when needed.
چون قطار تأخیر داشت، جلسه را نیم ساعت دیرتر شروع کردیم.
chun qatâr ta'khir dâsht, jalase râ nim sâ'at dir-tar shoru' kardim.
Because the train was delayed, we started the meeting half an hour later. (neutral)
امشب بیرون نمیآیم چون باید گزارش را تمام کنم.
emshab birun na-mi-âyam chun bâyad gozâresh râ tamâm konam.
I'm not going out tonight because I have to finish the report. (neutral conversation)
Do not put the subjunctive after چون merely because the clause is subordinate. A causal clause normally presents its content as a fact or accepted premise, so it takes whatever indicative tense the meaning requires. Purpose with تا is a different relation, covered on Reason with چون and Purpose with تا.
زیرا: Planned, Explicit Explanation
زیرا joins a claim to a following reason (formal). It is common in essays, reports, formal presentations, and careful argument. It is not archaic, but repeated زیرا in friendly conversation sounds bookish. It most naturally follows the proposition being justified.
این برآورد باید بازبینی شود، زیرا دادههای سه ماه اخیر در آن نیامده است.
in barâvord bâyad bâzbini shavad, zirâ dâde-hâ-ye se mâh-e akhir dar ân na-yâmade ast.
This estimate must be reviewed, because it does not include the data from the last three months. (formal/academic)
ثبت درخواست به معنای پذیرش آن نیست؛ زیرا نتیجه پس از ارزیابی اعلام میشود.
sabt-e darkhâst be ma'nâ-ye paziresh-e ân nist; zirâ natije pas az arzyâbi e'lâm mi-shavad.
Submitting an application does not mean that it has been accepted, since the result is announced after evaluation. (formal/administrative)
A comma can separate two moderately short clauses. A Persian semicolon is useful when both sides are substantial independent propositions. Punctuation reflects information units; it does not make زیرا grammatical, and no rule requires the same mark every time.
به دلیلِ: Package the Cause as a Noun Phrase
The final ل carries ezâfe before its complement: به دلیلِ باران، به دلیلِ خرابیِ آسانسور، به دلیلِ افزایشِ هزینهها. In ordinary unvowelized writing the kasre is invisible, but the spoken link is real. The phrase can come before or after the main predicate.
پرواز به دلیل مه شدید لغو شد.
parvâz be dalil-e meh-e shadid laghv shod.
The flight was canceled because of heavy fog. (neutral-formal)
به دلیل تعمیر شبکه، سامانه تا ظهر در دسترس نخواهد بود.
be dalil-e ta'mir-e shabake, sâmâne tâ zohr dar dast-ras na-khâhad bud.
Because of network maintenance, the system will be unavailable until noon. (formal notice)
Nominal packaging is useful when the cause is a recognized event or circumstance. It can also hide who acted. Compare به دلیلِ اعلام نشدن نتیجه “because the result was not announced” with چون دبیرخانه نتیجه را اعلام نکرد “because the secretariat did not announce the result.” The second explicitly assigns responsibility.
For a clausal complement, standard prose uses به این دلیل که or lexicalized به دلیل اینکه:
این گزینه را انتخاب کردیم، به این دلیل که هزینهی نگهداریاش کمتر بود.
in gozine râ entekhâb kardim, be in dalil ke hazine-ye negahdâri-ash kam-tar bud.
We chose this option because its maintenance cost was lower. (formal-neutral; explicit clausal frame)
Minimal Contrast
These sentences report the same basic cause but package it differently:
جلسه را عقب انداختیم چون مدیر هنوز نرسیده بود.
jalase râ aqab andâkhtim chun modir hanuz na-reside bud.
We postponed the meeting because the director had not arrived yet. (neutral; actor and past perfect explicit)
جلسه به دلیل نرسیدن مدیر به تعویق افتاد.
jalase be dalil-e na-residan-e modir be ta'viq oftâd.
The meeting was postponed because of the director's failure to arrive. (formal; event packaged nominally)
The second is not “better Persian.” It foregrounds the meeting and circumstance; the first foregrounds the organizers' decision and preserves temporal sequencing.
Two Ambiguous Contexts, Resolved Aloud
A friend asks why you left
In an ordinary answer, چون fits the interaction. زیرا is grammatical but sounds as though you are drafting a report.
زود برگشتم چون حالم خوب نبود.
zud bargashtam chun hâl-am khub na-bud.
I came back early because I wasn't feeling well. (neutral conversation)
A policy document names the basis for a delay
If “incomplete documents” is a stable administrative category, به دلیلِ نقص مدارک is compact. If the writer must say who failed to submit which document, use a finite clause instead.
رسیدگی به پرونده به دلیل نقص مدارک متوقف شده است.
residegi be parvande be dalil-e naqs-e madârek motavaqqef shode ast.
Processing of the case has stopped because the documentation is incomplete. (formal/administrative)
Common Mistakes
1. Putting a bare noun phrase after چون
❌ چون باران شدید، مسابقه لغو شد.
Incorrect for the intended causal clause — چون requires a finite predicate here.
✅ چون باران شدیدی میبارید، مسابقهی عصر لغو شد.
chun bârân-e shadidi mi-bârid, mosâbeqe-ye asr laghv shod.
Because it was raining heavily, the afternoon match was canceled.
2. Dropping ezâfe after دلیل
❌ برنامه به دلیل خرابی سرور متوقف شد.
barnâme be dalil kharâbi-ye server motavaqqef shod
Incorrect pronunciation if دلیل and خرابی are left unlinked; written Persian normally leaves the kasre invisible.
✅ برنامه به دلیل خرابی سرور مرکزی متوقف شد.
barnâme be dalil-e kharâbi-ye server-e markazi motavaqqef shod.
The program stopped because of a failure of the central server.
3. Using زیرا as if it governed a noun
❌ پرواز زیرا مه لغو شد.
Incorrect — زیرا introduces a clause, not the noun phrase مه.
✅ پرواز لغو شد، زیرا دید خلبان بسیار کم بود.
parvâz laghv shod, zirâ did-e khalabân besyâr kam bud.
The flight was canceled because the pilot's visibility was very poor. (formal)
4. Treating formal nominalization as automatically clearer
⚠️ به دلیل عدم انجام اعلام تغییرات، ابهام ایجاد شد.
be dalil-e adam-e anjâm-e e'lâm-e taghyirât, ebhâm ijâd shod.
Grammatical but needlessly stacked in the intended context: the event nouns obscure who failed to act.
✅ چون مسئولان تغییرات را اعلام نکردند، ابهام ایجاد شد.
chun mas'ulân taghyirât râ e'lâm na-kardand, ebhâm ijâd shod.
Because the officials did not announce the changes, confusion arose.
Key Takeaways
- Finite everyday/neutral reason: چون + clause.
- Finite formal justification: زیرا + clause.
- Packaged nominal cause: به دلیلِ + noun phrase.
- Full clause after this frame: به این دلیل که or به دلیل اینکه.
- Use punctuation to separate information units, not by a rigid connector rule.
- Prefer a finite clause when actor, tense, negation, or responsibility must stay visible.
