Inter places something between two reference points or among several members of a group. It covers physical position, a destination within a set, choices, ranges, and reciprocal relationships. Like other local prepositions, it normally takes an unmarked complement for position and a complement with directional -n when a new position between the reference points is reached.
Between two, among several
English divides “between” and “among,” but Esperanto normally uses inter for both. What matters is that the reference set has at least two distinguishable members.
The pharmacy is between the bank and the post office.
Ni trovis trankvilan lokon inter la arboj.
We found a quiet place among the trees.
Have you seen my ticket? — Yes, it is between the books on the table.
With two separately named reference points, coordinate them with kaj: inter la banko kaj la poŝtoficejo. With a plural group, a single plural phrase is enough: inter la arboj, inter la gastoj.
A collective singular can also contain multiple individuals, so inter la publiko “among the audience” is possible. An ordinary singular object with no internal plurality does not supply the contrast that inter needs: inter la domo is incomplete unless another reference point follows.
Foundational and older texts also attest solitary singular expressions for group membership or the division of a substance. Those historical patterns are intelligible, but PMEG recommends not imitating them; neutral contemporary prose is clearer with el for group membership and en for division within a substance. The productive central pattern remains plural or coordinated reference points.
Static position versus directional inter + -n
An unmarked complement tells where something is. Directional -n tells where it is placed, thrown, driven, or otherwise moved to.
La pilko kuŝas inter la du seĝoj.
The ball is lying between the two chairs.
Roll the ball between the two chairs, not under the table.
Ŝi metis la lampon inter la sofon kaj la fotelon.
She put the lamp between the sofa and the armchair.
In the last two examples, the ball and lamp reach new positions, so all agreeing words in the directional complement carry -n: inter la du seĝojn and inter la sofon kaj la fotelon.
Motion can also occur within an already established between-space. Then no directional ending appears:
La infanoj kuris inter la arboj dum ni preparis tagmanĝon.
The children ran among the trees while we prepared lunch.
The running takes place within the wooded area; inter la arboj does not name a newly reached destination. Compare the wider principle on directional prepositional phrases.
Inter versus apud, en, and meze de
These expressions answer different spatial questions.
| Phrase | Relationship |
|---|---|
| inter la domoj | within the space defined by several houses |
| apud la domoj | near the houses, without a between-relation |
| en la domoj | inside the houses |
| meze de la placo | in the middle/central part of the square |
La bicikloj staras apud la lernejo, inter la ĉefa pordo kaj la sportejo.
The bicycles are beside the school, between the main door and the gym.
Inter requires surrounding or contrasting members, but it does not necessarily mean the exact mathematical center. A café can be inter du stacioj while being closer to one. Use meze de when centrality itself matters.
Relationships and reciprocal activity
The entities need not be physical landmarks. Inter also defines social, political, logical, and communicative relationships.
La interkonsento inter la tri landoj validos ekde Januaro.
The agreement among the three countries will take effect in January.
Estas granda diferenco inter kompreni regulon kaj uzi ĝin spontane.
There is a big difference between understanding a rule and using it spontaneously.
We discussed the problem among ourselves before presenting it to the director.
Inter ni makes the participants a group within whose relations the discussion occurs. With a third-person plural subject, inter si often expresses “among themselves”: Ili dividis la taskojn inter si. The reflexive si points back to the clause subject; it is not a general translation of “them.”
For a direct reciprocal object, Esperanto often uses unu la alian rather than inter:
La du teamoj respektas unu la alian malgraŭ la rivaleco inter ili.
The two teams respect each other despite the rivalry between them.
Here unu la alian is the object of respektas, while inter ili describes the relationship’s sphere. See reciprocal unu la alian for the object pattern.
Choice among alternatives versus selection from a group
Use inter when alternatives confront the chooser; use el when someone or something is identified as a member extracted from a group.
We have to choose between repairing the old bridge and building a new one.
Of the three proposals, the second is the most realistic.
She chose the least expensive model from the five available ones.
Elekti inter kvin modeloj focuses on facing five alternatives. Elekti unu el kvin modeloj focuses on extracting one member. Both can describe the same decision, but not from the same viewpoint.
The same relation supports distribution:
Ni dividis la restantan manĝaĵon inter la kvar familioj.
We divided the remaining food among the four families.
The families form the set across which the food is distributed. The accusative on manĝaĵon marks the direct object; familioj stays unmarked because this is not movement into a new spatial position.
Time spans, numbers, and ranges
Inter can locate an event within two temporal or numerical boundaries.
La teknikisto alvenos inter la naŭa kaj la dekunua.
The technician will arrive between nine and eleven.
La riparo kostos inter ducent kaj tricent eŭrojn, laŭ la difekto.
The repair will cost between two hundred and three hundred euros, depending on the damage.
Here inter modifies the numerical range rather than governing eŭrojn as a spatial complement. Eŭrojn carries the measure ending licensed by kostos; it is not a directional accusative. The same structure appears in an object such as Mi vidis inter cent kaj ducent homojn “I saw between one hundred and two hundred people.”
Whether the endpoints themselves are included may depend on the real-world convention. A price estimated inter ducent kaj tricent eŭroj can normally equal 200 or 300; an appointment promised inter la naŭa kaj la dekunua is pragmatically expected within that window, but precision should be stated if a boundary matters.
Use de ... ĝis ... when presenting the whole ordered extent rather than locating something somewhere within it:
La ekspozicio estos malfermita de mardo ĝis dimanĉo.
The exhibition will be open from Tuesday through Sunday.
English “between Monday and Friday” can mean an unspecified time inside the interval; “from Monday through Friday” presents the entire duration. Esperanto makes the same conceptual distinction with inter versus de ... ĝis ....
Because inter precisely names the relation among reference points, vague je cannot replace it: say diferenco inter la du planoj, not diferenco je la du planoj.
Compounds and related forms
Inter- productively creates words involving mutuality, exchange, or a position across members:
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| interkonsento | agreement reached among parties |
| interparolo | conversation |
| interŝanĝi | exchange |
| interrilato | relationship, interrelation |
| internacia | international, between or among nations |
Do not confuse intera with interna. Intera means intermediate or situated between; interna means inner or located inside.
The inner door leads to an intermediate corridor between the two buildings.
The sentence deliberately contrasts an inside part with a part occupying a between-position.
Norm and register
Inter is a foundational, neutral preposition. Its spatial, temporal, alternative, distributive, and relational uses occur in both conversation and formal writing. Directional inter + -n is standard whenever the complement truly names a new endpoint; it is not a special literary construction.
Common Mistakes
Using a lone ordinary singular complement
❌ La aŭto estas inter la domo.
Incomplete — one ordinary house does not provide two sides or a group.
The car is between the house and the garage.
Adding -n to a static position
❌ La benko staras inter la altajn arbojn.
Incorrect — the bench already occupies that position.
✅ La benko staras inter la altaj arboj.
The bench stands among the tall trees.
Omitting -n from a newly reached position
❌ Metu la skatolon inter la du seĝoj.
Incorrect for placing it into the between-space — the destination needs -n.
✅ Metu la skatolon inter la du seĝojn.
Put the box between the two chairs.
Using inter when the intended relation is emergence from a group
❌ Post kelkaj minutoj li venis inter la homamaso.
Incorrect for emerging from the crowd — inter places him among it rather than marking it as his source.
After a few minutes, he emerged from the crowd.
Confusing intera with interna
Wrong if the intended pocket is on the inside, not between other parts.
The documents are in the inside pocket of my jacket.
Key Takeaways
Use inter for “between” and “among.” Its complement must identify at least two relevant members, whether separately named, plural, or collective. Leave a static complement unmarked; add directional -n for a new between-position. Use inter for alternatives and relations, but el for straightforward membership or extraction from a group.
