The preposition ĉirkaŭ has one visual core: something is distributed or moves on several sides of a center. From that spatial picture come two major extensions—distribution across an area and approximation around a time or number.
Surrounding a Center
Ĉirkaŭ does not require a perfect circle. It is enough that people, objects, or movement occupy several sides of a reference point or more or less enclose it.
Ni sidis ĉirkaŭ la fajro kaj rakontis historiojn ĝis noktomezo.
We sat around the fire and told stories until midnight.
Alta barilo staras ĉirkaŭ la ĝardeno.
A high fence stands around the garden.
La Luno rondiras ĉirkaŭ la Tero.
The Moon revolves around the Earth.
The fire, garden, and Earth are centers. Ĉirkaŭ describes the surrounding arrangement or orbit, while apud would merely place something beside the center on one side.
La infanoj staris apud la tablo.
The children stood next to the table.
La infanoj staris ĉirkaŭ la tablo.
The children stood around the table.
That minimal contrast is central: apud gives lateral proximity; ĉirkaŭ distributes the children on multiple sides.
Static Position and Directional -N
In a static relation, the complement after ĉirkaŭ has no accusative ending.
La hundoj kuras ĉirkaŭ la domo ĉiumatene.
The dogs run around the house every morning.
The dogs' path surrounds the house; they are not moving toward the house as a destination. Motion alone does not trigger directional -n.
Use -n when something moves into a surrounding position:
Ŝi metis la koltukon ĉirkaŭ sian kolon.
She put the scarf around her neck.
Before the action, the scarf was not in that position; afterward it surrounds her neck. Compare the resulting static state:
La koltuko restis ĉirkaŭ ŝia kolo dum la tuta promenado.
The scarf remained around her neck throughout the walk.
Directional ĉirkaŭ + -n can also describe reaching the far side by moving around an obstacle:
La kato kuris ĉirkaŭ la angulon kaj malaperis.
The cat ran around the corner and disappeared.
This is a genuine goal/path interpretation: the cat reaches a location beyond the corner by going around it. See prepositions with optional directional -n for the general system.
Across an Area or in Many Places
The surrounding image can broaden into scattered distribution near or on several sides of a landmark. The places need not form a literal ring.
La kompanio havas malgrandajn oficejojn ĉirkaŭ la ĉefurbo.
The company has small offices around the capital.
Ĉirkaŭ la ĉambro staris skatoloj, seĝoj kaj du malnovaj lampoj.
Around the room stood boxes, chairs, and two old lamps.
In the first sentence, the capital is a geographic center and the offices are in its surrounding area. For distribution through a whole country or the world, tra is normally clearer: oficejoj tra la tuta lando, novaĵo konata tra la mondo. By contrast, directional ĉirkaŭ la mondon can describe a complete journey around the globe.
Approximate Time
A time can be imagined as a central point with a margin before and after it. Ĉirkaŭ therefore means “at approximately.”
La trajno alvenos ĉirkaŭ la oka vespere.
The train will arrive around eight in the evening.
Ĉirkaŭ la fino de Marto la vetero kutime fariĝas pli milda.
Around the end of March, the weather usually becomes milder.
Compare exact je with approximate ĉirkaŭ:
La prezento komenciĝos je la sepa; venu ĉirkaŭ la sesa kaj duono.
The presentation will start at seven; come around six thirty.
Je la sepa gives the scheduled point. Ĉirkaŭ la sesa kaj duono allows a margin. Do not combine them as je ĉirkaŭ la sesa unless there is a special syntactic reason; plain ĉirkaŭ already marks the temporal relation.
Approximate Numbers and Quantities
Before a numeral, ĉirkaŭ means “approximately/about.” It modifies the number rather than governing a spatial noun phrase.
Ĉirkaŭ cent homoj partoprenis la publikan kunvenon.
About a hundred people attended the public meeting.
La riparo kostos ĉirkaŭ du mil eŭrojn.
The repair will cost about two thousand euros.
The case required by the sentence remains visible after the numeral. In the second example, du mil eŭrojn is a price measure and takes -n; that ending is not caused by ĉirkaŭ. In ĉirkaŭ cent homoj partoprenis, the noun phrase is the subject and has no -n.
The abbreviation ĉ. is common in tables, notes, and other compact formal writing: ĉ. 200 paĝoj. In continuous prose, spelling out ĉirkaŭ is generally clearer, especially for learners and international readers.
— Kiom da tempo ni bezonos? — Ĉirkaŭ dudek minutojn, se ne estos trafiko.
— How much time will we need? — About twenty minutes, if there is no traffic.
Figurative and Topic-Like Uses
Ideas, discussions, or activity can metaphorically gather around a center.
La tuta debato turniĝis ĉirkaŭ unu praktika demando.
The whole debate revolved around one practical question.
This is standard figurative usage: the question is the conceptual center. Do not extend it mechanically to every English “about.” For the topic of speech or a book, pri is normally clearer:
Ŝi verkis artikolon pri publika transporto.
She wrote an article about public transport.
Artikolo ĉirkaŭ publika transporto is possible only with a deliberately figurative “organized around” nuance and is not the neutral topic marker.
Word Family and Compounds
The same root forms several transparent words:
| Form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ĉirkaŭa | surrounding, nearby |
| ĉirkaŭe | around, on all sides |
| ĉirkaŭen | around in various directions |
| ĉirkaŭi | to surround |
| ĉirkaŭaĵo | surroundings |
La ĉirkaŭaj stratoj estos fermitaj dum la maratono.
The surrounding streets will be closed during the marathon.
Mi rigardis ĉirkaŭen, sed mi ne vidis la elirejon.
I looked around, but I did not see the exit.
The directional ending in ĉirkaŭen means looking toward various surrounding points. Ĉirkaŭi is transitive: Arboj ĉirkaŭas la domon. Keep that structure distinct from prepositional Arboj staras ĉirkaŭ la domo.
Common Mistakes
Adding -N after every motion verb
❌ Ni promenis ĉirkaŭ la lagon dum unu horo.
Incorrect for a path around the lake with no new surrounding endpoint.
✅ Ni promenis ĉirkaŭ la lago dum unu horo.
We walked around the lake for an hour.
Omitting directional -N for placement
❌ Li metis la brakojn ĉirkaŭ ŝia kolo.
Incorrect — the arms move into a surrounding position.
✅ Li metis la brakojn ĉirkaŭ ŝian kolon.
He put his arms around her neck.
Using ĈIRKAŬ as a neutral topic marker
❌ Ni legis libron ĉirkaŭ klimata ŝanĝiĝo.
Incorrect for the ordinary meaning ‘a book about climate change.’
✅ Ni legis libron pri klimata ŝanĝiĝo.
We read a book about climate change.
Combining exact JE with approximate ĈIRKAŬ unnecessarily
❌ La gasto alvenos ĉirkaŭ je la kvina.
Incorrect — do not stack a second time preposition inside the ĉirkaŭ phrase.
✅ La gasto alvenos ĉirkaŭ la kvina.
The guest will arrive around five.
Treating ĈIRKAŬ as “next to”
❌ La lampo staras ĉirkaŭ la sofo.
Incorrect if there is one lamp on one side of the sofa.
✅ La lampo staras apud la sofo.
The lamp stands next to the sofa.
Key Takeaways
- Ĉirkaŭ places or moves something on several sides of a center; no perfect circle is required.
- Static/path uses normally have no -n; directional -n marks movement into a surrounding position or around an obstacle to a new endpoint.
- The spatial center metaphor extends naturally to approximate times and numbers.
- Use pri, not ĉirkaŭ, as the ordinary marker of a topic.
- Derived ĉirkaŭa, ĉirkaŭe, ĉirkaŭen, and ĉirkaŭi preserve the same surrounding core.
