Conversation-management phrases do not primarily add facts; they help speakers coordinate the act of talking. They signal “I am starting,” “I did not understand,” “let me rephrase,” “this is a new topic,” or “we are finished.” English discourse words rarely map one-to-one onto Esperanto, so the safest method is to learn a stable pragmatic core with a variable clause, term, or topic slot.
nu and do organize the floor differently
Nu draws attention to what comes next. Depending on intonation, it can open a response, show hesitation, urge action, concede a point, or move toward closure. It is especially common (informal) in live conversation. It is not simply the translation of every English well.
Nu, kion vi proponas, se la unua plano ne funkcios?
Well then, what do you propose if the first plan does not work?
— Ĉu vi venos kun ni? — Nu, bone, sed mi ne povos longe resti.
— Will you come with us? — All right then, but I will not be able to stay long.
Nu, mi devas iri. Dankon pro la agrabla vespero.
Well, I have to go. Thank you for the pleasant evening.
Do presents what follows as a consequence, inference, summary, or next practical step. In conversation it can mark “so/then,” but its logical link should remain recoverable.
La lasta trajno jam foriris, do ni mendu taksion.
The last train has already left, so let's order a taxi.
Do, se mi ĝuste komprenas, vi bezonas la finan version ĝis vendredo.
So, if I understand correctly, you need the final version by Friday.
The pair can occur together: Nu do... signals that the speaker is ready to proceed or conclude. Repeating either word in every turn sounds mannered. Neutral written prose normally uses more explicit connectors.
Holding and taking a turn
To ask for the floor, use a question or permission frame. Ĉu mi povas aldoni ion? is neutral. Mi volus aldoni, ke... is softer (formal). To keep a turn after interruption, name the conversational need directly rather than sounding accusatory.
The broader social strategies behind these choices are covered in turn-taking and interruption.
Ĉu mi povas aldoni ion antaŭ ol ni decidos?
May I add something before we decide?
Mi volus aldoni, ke la buĝeto ankoraŭ ne estas aprobita.
I would like to add that the budget has not yet been approved.
Momenton, mi ankoraŭ ne finis la klarigon.
One moment, I have not finished the explanation yet.
Pardonu, ke mi interrompas, sed ni havas nur kvin minutojn.
Sorry to interrupt, but we have only five minutes.
The stable politeness core Pardonu, ke... accepts a clause naming the social disruption: ke mi interrompas, ke mi revenas al tio, ke mi demandas denove. For a firmer request, Permesu al mi fini is grammatical and clear (formal); in friendly talk, Atendu momenton is direct (informal) and depends heavily on tone.
Repairing comprehension
Repair works best in stages: first signal the problem, then identify its location, then request a specific remedy. Mi ne komprenis reports failure on that occasion; Mi ne komprenas describes the current state.
Pardonu, mi ne bone komprenis la lastan frazon. Ĉu vi povas ripeti ĝin?
Sorry, I did not quite understand the last sentence. Can you repeat it?
Ĉu vi povus paroli iom pli malrapide?
Could you speak a little more slowly?
Kion signifas la vorto «ĝisdatigi» en ĉi tiu kunteksto?
What does the word ‘ĝisdatigi’ mean in this context?
Kiel oni diras ‘receipt’ en Esperanto?
How does one say ‘receipt’ in Esperanto?
These are productive frames. Replace la lastan frazon with the misunderstood item, pli malrapide with the required adjustment, or the quoted term with any lexical gap. The impersonal oni in Kiel oni diras...? asks about community usage, not one person's choice.
To verify an interpretation, use Ĉu vi volas diri, ke... ? or Ĉu mi ĝuste komprenas, ke... ?. Both take a complete ke-clause.
Ĉu vi volas diri, ke la rezervado ne estas konfirmita?
Do you mean that the booking has not been confirmed?
— Ĉu mi ĝuste komprenas, ke ni renkontiĝos rete? — Jes, ĝuste.
— Do I understand correctly that we will meet online? — Yes, exactly.
Brief responses such as ĝuste, komprenite, certe, and bone can acknowledge a turn. Komprenite means “understood/acknowledged”; it need not mean agreement. Jes, ĝuste confirms the formulation.
Reformulating what you mean
Mi volas diri... introduces a correction or intended meaning. Alivorte... offers another formulation, while tio estas... specifies or equates. Pli precize... narrows a claim and is useful in careful discussion (academic).
Mi ne kritikas la ideon mem; mi volas diri, ke ni bezonas pli da tempo.
I am not criticizing the idea itself; I mean that we need more time.
La servo estos provizore interrompita — alivorte, ĝi ne funkcios ĉi-nokte.
The service will be temporarily interrupted—in other words, it will not work tonight.
Ni renkontiĝos fine de la monato, pli precize la dudek-naŭan.
We will meet at the end of the month, more precisely on the twenty-ninth.
Tio estas can clarify an antecedent, but mechanically translating every English abbreviation or spoken I mean with it produces stiff speech. Select the phrase by function: self-correction, paraphrase, or precision.
Shifting and returning to a topic
Cetere adds a side point or shifts to another relevant matter. Parenteze explicitly marks a parenthesis and is common in conversation (informal). Rilate al + noun phrase introduces a topic in planned or formal speech. Revenante al + noun phrase returns after a digression; its adverbial participle presents the speaker's conversational action.
Cetere, ĉu vi jam ricevis la mesaĝon de Lidia?
By the way, have you already received Lidia's message?
Parenteze, tiu kafejo nun fermas unu horon pli frue.
Incidentally, that café now closes one hour earlier.
Rilate al la dua propono, mi havas unu praktikan demandon.
Regarding the second proposal, I have one practical question.
Revenante al nia ĉefa temo, ni ankoraŭ devas elekti daton.
Returning to our main topic, we still have to choose a date.
In a meeting, Ni revenu al... directly invites the group back. In conversation, Sed por reveni al... softens the redirection by presenting it as the speaker's own organizational move.
Summarizing and closing
Resume marks an actual summary and is especially useful in planned speech (formal); mallonge dirite means “put briefly.” A close often combines do with a practical conclusion, then a farewell or next-contact expression.
Resume, ni aprobis la buĝeton sed prokrastis la lanĉon.
In summary, we approved the budget but postponed the launch.
Do, ni interkonsentis. Mi sendos la dokumenton hodiaŭ, kaj vi respondos morgaŭ.
So, we have an agreement. I will send the document today, and you will reply tomorrow.
Bone, mi ne plu retenu vin. Ĝis la venonta semajno!
All right, I won't keep you any longer. See you next week!
Agreement is not the same as acknowledgment
Back-channel responses show that a listener is following, but they do not all commit the listener to the claim. Mi komprenas and komprenite acknowledge reception. Ĝuste confirms that a formulation is correct. Mi konsentas explicitly agrees, while eble or mi ne certas withholds commitment. This distinction matters in meetings: silence or bone may permit the conversation to continue without approving a proposal.
— La livero prokrastiĝos unu semajnon. — Mi komprenas, sed mi ne konsentas pri la nova prezo.
— The delivery will be delayed by one week. — I understand, but I do not agree about the new price.
— Do vi sendos la tekston hodiaŭ? — Ĝuste, antaŭ la sesa.
— So you will send the text today? — Correct, before six.
An English speaker may use I see to mean “I understand.” Literal mi vidas can sometimes be interpreted that way from context, but mi komprenas is the transparent international choice. This is an instance where literal metaphor is possible yet pedagogically less reliable.
To disagree without seizing the floor aggressively, acknowledge a valid part before marking the contrast: Mi komprenas vian argumenton, tamen... or Pri tio mi konsentas; tamen.... The fixed first clause does social work, while the variable tamen clause supplies the substantive objection.
Mi komprenas vian zorgon; tamen prokrasto kreus alian problemon.
I understand your concern; however, a delay would create another problem.
Managing online and group conversation
The same system extends to video calls and text chats, but the repair target changes. Speakers name audio, connection, screen, message, or thread. Short explicit phrases are preferable to idioms because a technical failure already increases processing difficulty.
Mi ne bone aŭdas vin. Ĉu vi povas ripeti la lastan parton?
I cannot hear you well. Can you repeat the last part?
Pardonu, la konekto interrompiĝis. Pri kiu punkto vi parolis?
Sorry, the connection dropped. Which point were you discussing?
Ni parolas samtempe; bonvolu fini, kaj poste mi respondos.
We are speaking at the same time; please finish, and then I will respond.
In a group, address responsibility without ambiguity: Mi respondos al la demando de Ana, poste Marko parolos. In text, Rilate al via unua demando... anchors a reply when intervening messages have separated it from its source. These are not special online grammar; they are ordinary topic and turn frames applied to a medium with fewer intonational cues.
Rilate al via unua demando: jes, la registrado restos malfermita ĝis vendredo.
Regarding your first question: yes, registration will remain open until Friday.
Intonation and punctuation change the force
A phrase's words do not determine its social effect alone. A rising Ĉu vere? can invite confirmation; a sharply falling Ĉu vere. may sound skeptical or ironic in represented dialogue. Nu, nu can soothe, warn, or show impatience according to delivery. Writing must replace some of those cues with context, punctuation, or an explicit stance phrase.
In formal minutes, avoid transcribing every nu and hesitation. Report the conversational function: Ŝi petis klarigon, li resumis la decidon, la prezidanto revenigis la diskuton al la tagordo. In literary dialogue (literary), by contrast, well-chosen particles can reveal pace and attitude.
Common Mistakes
Translating English filler well as bone everywhere
❌ Bone, mi ne certas pri la respondo.
Awkward when bone is intended only as the discourse marker ‘well.’
✅ Nu, mi ne certas pri la respondo.
Well, I am not sure about the answer.
Confusing fakte with aktuale
❌ Aktuale, la kunveno estis nuligita hieraŭ.
Incorrect for ‘actually’ — aktuale means currently or presently.
✅ Fakte, la kunveno estis nuligita hieraŭ.
Actually, the meeting was cancelled yesterday.
Copying English you know as a filler
❌ Ĝi estis, vi scias, iom stranga situacio.
Unnatural as a mechanical filler; vi scias normally makes a real claim about the listener's knowledge.
✅ Ĝi estis, nu, iom stranga situacio.
It was, well, a somewhat strange situation.
Using do without an inferential link
❌ Mi loĝas en Oslo. Do, kia estas via plej ŝatata filmo?
Awkward — the new question does not follow from the preceding statement.
✅ Mi loĝas en Oslo. Cetere, kia estas via plej ŝatata filmo?
I live in Oslo. By the way, what is your favourite film?
Key Takeaways
Conversation management becomes systematic when phrases are grouped by function. Nu manages attention and stance; do marks consequence or a next step. Repair frames specify what was not understood and the remedy needed. Alivorte, pli precize, cetere, and revenante al... distinguish reformulation, precision, topic shift, and return. Register and intonation matter as much as literal dictionary meaning.
