The invariant particle ajn adds emphatic indefiniteness or indifference to a correlative: identity, place, time, manner, or another value makes no difference. Depending on the construction, kiu ajn means “whoever/whichever,” kie ajn means “wherever,” and io ajn means “anything whatsoever.” All unmarked uses here are neutral in register.
Ajn works with a complete table word
Ajn is not one of the five initials or nine endings. It follows an already complete table word and widens its range to unrestricted alternatives.
| Base domain | With ajn | Core meaning |
|---|---|---|
| kiu, identity | kiu ajn | whoever/whichever; identity does not matter |
| kio, thing | kio ajn | whatever |
| kie, place | kie ajn | wherever |
| kiam, time | kiam ajn | whenever |
| kiel, manner | kiel ajn | however; in whatever way |
| kiom, quantity/degree | kiom ajn | however much/many |
Kiu ajn venos unue, tiu malfermu la fenestrojn.
Whoever arrives first should open the windows.
Mi trovos vin, kie ajn vi atendos.
I will find you wherever you wait.
In these free-choice relative clauses, ajn signals that every possible identity or place leads to the same result. The following clause supplies a real grammatical role for the ki- word.
Relative free choice: whoever, whatever, wherever
The most central use combines ajn with a relative ki- correlative. English often fuses the meaning into a word ending in -ever; Esperanto keeps two words.
Elektu kion ajn vi volas el la menuo.
Choose whatever you want from the menu.
Kiam ajn vi bezonos helpon, telefonu al mi.
Whenever you need help, call me.
Ni akceptos la rezulton, kia ajn ĝi estos.
We will accept the result, whatever it is like.
The table-word ending still determines the domain: kion ajn is an object thing, kiam ajn a time, and kia ajn a quality. English whatever can cover both thing and kind, so translation alone cannot select between kio ajn and kia ajn.
Concessive “no matter how”
With kiel, kia, or kiom, ajn often creates a concessive scale: even at any possible manner, quality, or degree, the main result remains true.
Kiel ajn zorge vi pakos la glason, uzu ankaŭ molan ŝtofon.
No matter how carefully you pack the glass, also use a soft cloth.
Kiom ajn mi klarigis la problemon, li ne ŝanĝis sian opinion.
No matter how much I explained the problem, he did not change his opinion.
Kia ajn estos la vetero, la merkato malfermiĝos je la oka.
Whatever the weather is like, the market will open at eight.
This pattern is not simply emphatic very. Kiom ajn mi klarigis does not say exactly how much explaining occurred; it says that increasing or varying the amount did not alter the outcome.
Iu ajn and ĉiu ajn outside a relative clause
When there is no following relative clause, modern descriptive guidance prefers an i- or ĉi- table word rather than a bare ki- form influenced by national-language “any.”
Iu ajn selects any one eligible individual, with identity irrelevant. Ĉiu ajn says any arbitrary member qualifies and can approach “absolutely anyone/every single eligible one.”
Donu al mi iun ajn krajonon; la koloro ne gravas.
Give me any pencil; the color does not matter.
Ĉiu ajn povas lerni la bazajn regulojn en unu posttagmezo.
Absolutely anyone can learn the basic rules in one afternoon.
Ĉu vi havas ian ajn pruvon? — Ne, nur suspekton.
Do you have any evidence whatsoever? — No, only a suspicion.
Foundational examples and older usage do sometimes have independent kian ajn pagon and similar forms. Such usage is attested and understandable, not an error. The recommended modern choice is ian ajn pagon when one unrestricted kind will do, or ĉian ajn pagon when every kind is acceptable.
Mi akceptos ian ajn pagmanieron, kondiĉe ke ĝi estu sekura.
I will accept any payment method, provided that it is secure.
Case and number stay on the correlative
Ajn never changes form. If the table word permits -j/-n, those endings appear before ajn as part of the table word: kiun ajn, kiujn ajn, kian ajn, kiajn ajn.
Invitu kiujn ajn kolegojn vi volas.
Invite whichever colleagues you want.
Mi legos iun ajn el tiuj tri romanoj.
I will read any one of those three novels.
In the first sentence, kiujn is plural and accusative inside vi volas [inviti] kiujn kolegojn. In the second, iun is a singular accusative choice from a set. For the full marking map, see case and number on correlatives.
Ajn with universal and negative forms
Ĉiam ajn can mean “at absolutely any time,” often as a welcoming or permissive formula. Nenio ajn/nenion ajn strengthens zero reference: absolutely nothing. These combinations are established but less central than relative ki- + ajn.
Vi povas veni ĉiam ajn; la pordo estos malfermita.
You can come at absolutely any time; the door will be open.
Mi diros nenion ajn pri la surprizo.
I will say absolutely nothing about the surprise.
Do not assume that English any always needs ajn. In a neutral question Ĉu iu telefonis? already means “Did anyone call?” In an unrestricted negative, neniu telefonis means “nobody called.” Add ajn only when indifference, unrestricted choice, or emphatic breadth contributes something.
Ĉu iu telefonis dum mi forestis? — Ne, neniu.
Did anyone call while I was away? — No, nobody.
Word order, norm, and scope
Ajn stands immediately after the correlative it modifies. It is written as a separate word, without a hyphen. Moving it can obscure scope or produce a nonstandard sequence. The Fundamento explicitly establishes ki- + ajn; modern usage extends the same transparent particle to i-, ĉi-, and occasionally neni- correlatives.
When several correlatives occur, repeat ajn where separate free-choice scopes matter:
Kiuj ajn venos, kiam ajn ili venos, trovos pretan ĉambron.
Whoever comes, whenever they come, will find a room ready.
Common Mistakes
Putting ajn before the correlative
❌ Ajn kiu povas aliĝi.
Incorrect word order — ajn follows the table word.
✅ Ĉiu ajn povas aliĝi.
Absolutely anyone can join.
Hyphenating the two words
❌ Elektu kion-ajn vi volas.
Incorrect spelling — kion ajn is a two-word expression.
✅ Elektu kion ajn vi volas.
Choose whatever you want.
Putting case on ajn
❌ Invitu kiu ajnn vi volas.
Incorrect — case belongs on the eligible correlative, never on ajn.
✅ Invitu kiun ajn vi volas.
Invite whomever you want.
Choosing the wrong domain
❌ Prenu kia ajn estas sur la tablo.
Incorrect for an unrestricted thing — kia asks about kind or quality.
✅ Prenu kion ajn vi trovos sur la tablo.
Take whatever you find on the table.
Adding ajn to every English “any”
❌ Mi ne vidis iun ajn en la oficejo.
Wrong for the intended neutral total negative; use the negative series.
✅ Mi vidis neniun en la oficejo.
I saw nobody in the office.
Key Takeaways
Ajn follows a complete correlative and makes its value unrestricted or irrelevant. It is especially common in free-choice relatives such as kiu ajn and concessive expressions such as kiom ajn. Keep it separate and invariant, place case/number on the correlative, and do not translate every English any with ajn.
