Writing ما...ش and Internal Clitics

Mainstream Cairene can negate a finite verb with two pieces, ما...ش, placed around the whole verbal host. Although grammar lessons display dots to reveal the frame, ordinary writing does not type dots or spaces inside it: ماكتبش، ماكتبتش، ماشفتهاش، ماقلتهوش.

The difficult part is not merely attaching ما and ش. Person endings and object or recipient clitics remain inside the frame. The negative clitic-order guide explains the syntax; this page gives a stable joined spelling procedure.

Compact form table

Positive hostJoined negativeAnalysisMeaning
كتبماكتبشما + كتب + شhe did not write
كتبتماكتبتشما + كتب + ت + شI/you did not write
بكتبمابكتبشما + ب + كتب + شI do not write
شفتهاماشفتهاشما + شفت + ها + شI did not see her/it
قلتلهماقلتلوشما + قلت + لـه + شI did not tell him
قلتهماقلتهوشما + قلت + ـه + شI did not say it

The table's plus signs are analytical. The negative column shows what belongs in running Egyptian text. The form may be long, but its internal order is systematic.

Build the word from the host outward

Start with the complete positive finite form, including agreement and clitics. Put ما at its left edge and ش at its right edge.

هو ماكتبش العنوان على الظرف.

huwwa makatabsh il-ʿonwān ʿala ẓ-ẓarf

He didn't write the address on the envelope.

أنا ماكتبتش اسمي في آخر الورقة.

ʾana makatabtish ismi fi ākhir il-waraʾa

I didn't write my name at the end of the sheet.

The ـت in the second form stays next to the stem because it marks the subject. Negative ـش comes after it. English did not appears before a bare verb, but Egyptian perfect negation does not remove the verb's person ending.

💡
Cover the outer letters ما...ش with your fingers. What remains should be a recognizable positive finite host, including any person and object material.

Minimal contrast 1: event versus current state

مافهمتش السؤال لما المدرس شرحه.

mafhimtish is-suʾāl lamma l-modarris sharaḥo

I didn't understand the question when the teacher explained it.

مش فاهم السؤال لحد دلوقتي.

mish fāhim is-suʾāl li-ḥadd dilwaʾti

I still don't understand the question. (male speaker; literally ‘not understanding’)

These are different constructions, not two spacing options. مافهمتش wraps a finite perfect event; separate مش negates participial فاهم, a current state. Natural English uses “understand” for both and can hide this grammatical difference.

Internal object clitics

An object suffix comes before final ـش.

ماشفتهاش في المكتب النهارده.

mashofthāsh fil-maktab in-nahārda

I didn't see her at the office today.

مابعتلهاش الصورة عشان كانت مشغولة.

mabaʿattilhāsh iṣ-ṣūra ʿashān kānit mashghūla

I didn't send her the picture because she was busy.

In ماشفتهاش, feminine object ـها sits inside the negative frame. In مابعتلهاش, recipient لها does the same. Do not move ـش before the clitic or write the clitic as an English-style separate pronoun.

Minimal contrast 2: object and recipient

ماقلتهوش في الاجتماع.

maʾoltehūsh fil-igtimāʿ

I didn't say it in the meeting.

ماقلتلوش عن الاجتماع.

maʾoltilūsh ʿan il-igtimāʿ

I didn't tell him about the meeting.

The first contains direct object ـه “it”; the second contains recipient لـه “to him.” Before negative ـش, their spoken vowels lengthen, reflected in romanization -hūsh / -lūsh and conventional spellings هوش / لوش. The added letters are not arbitrary padding: they keep different clitic structures readable.

b- imperfect stays inside the negative frame

مابشربش قهوة بعد المغرب.

mabashrabsh ʾahwa baʿd il-maghrib

I don't drink coffee after sunset.

أخويا مابيردش على مكالمات من أرقام مش مسجلة.

ʾakhūya mabiyiroddsh ʿala mokālamāt min ʾarʾām mish mosaggala

My brother doesn't answer calls from numbers that aren't saved.

The b- marker does not disappear under negation. The order is ما + ب + person/stem + ش. This spelling also helps distinguish the negative finite verb from مش + participle/adjective.

Future negation uses مش

For the ordinary future, this guide uses separate مش before joined حـ:

مش حنسافر الأسبوع ده.

mish ḥanisāfir il-ʾosbūʿ da

We aren't going to travel this week.

Forming a single ماحنسافرش by mechanical analogy is not the baseline taught here. Regional, generational, and discourse variation in negation exists, but it must be described specifically rather than mixed into one learner rule.

What about spaces found online?

Forms such as ما كتبتش occur in spontaneous messages, subtitles, and user-generated text (informal digital variation). Readers understand them, and an editor may preserve them in an accountable quotation. This guide nonetheless joins ماكتبتش because the negative frame and host form one searchable orthographic unit.

Spacing becomes much less defensible when it strands ش by itself—ما كتبت ش—or separates an internal object—ما قلت هوش. Those shapes import English word boundaries and obscure Egyptian morphology.

A realistic apology message

مارديتش عليكي امبارح عشان ماشفتش الرسالة. ولما شفتها، ماحبيتش أزعجك متأخر. أنا مش ناسي الموضوع، وحرد عليكي النهارده.

maraddētish ʿalēki imbāriḥ ʿashān mashoftish ir-risāla. wi-lamma shoftha, maḥabbētish ʾazʿigik mitʾakhkhar. ʾana mish nāsi l-mawḍūʿ, wi-ḥarodd ʿalēki n-nahārda

I didn't reply to you yesterday because I didn't see the message. When I did see it, I didn't want to bother you late. I haven't forgotten the matter, and I'll reply today. (male sender addressing a woman)

The message contrasts three systems: joined perfect negatives مارديتش، ماشفتش، ماحبيتش; independent مش before participle ناسي; and separate مش would also precede a future, though the final affirmative uses joined حرد.

Keyboard method

Type the word in logical morphological order: م ا + host + clitics + ش. Do not type three literal dots from the notation ما...ش. Do not insert a hyphen, Latin apostrophe, or invisible direction mark. After typing, move the cursor through the word and check that every object or recipient lies before final ش.

Common Mistakes

Splitting all three pieces

❌ أنا ما فهمت ش التعليمات.

Incorrect edited segmentation—the finite negative is one orthographic word.

✅ إحنا مافهمناش آخر خطوة.

ʾiḥna mafhimnāsh ākhir khoṭwa

We didn't understand the last step.

Putting ـش before the object

❌ أنا ماشفش ها في الصورة.

Incorrect clitic order—the object suffix belongs inside the negative frame.

✅ أنا ماعرفتهاش من الصورة القديمة.

ʾana maʿarafthāsh min iṣ-ṣūra l-ʾadīma

I didn't recognize her from the old picture.

Replacing finite negation with مش mechanically

❌ أنا مش كتبت التقرير امبارح.

Incorrect for the intended neutral event negation—use ما...ش around the finite perfect.

✅ أنا ماخلصتش التقرير امبارح.

ʾana makhallaṣtish it-taʾrīr imbāriḥ

I didn't finish the report yesterday.

Wrapping the ordinary future in ما...ش

❌ ماحقدرش أجيلك بكرة.

Not the baseline future negation taught here—mainstream Cairene ordinarily uses separate مش before حقدر.

✅ مش حقدر أجيلك قبل الساعة ستة.

mish ḥaʾdar ʾagīlak ʾabl is-sāʿa sitta

I won't be able to come to you before six. (to a man)

Key Takeaways

  • Type circumfixal verbal negation as one word: ماكتبش، مابكتبش، ماشفتهاش.
  • Keep person endings, b- markers, and object or recipient clitics inside ما...ش.
  • Distinguish finite ما...ش, predicate مش, and future مش حـ by grammar, not by their English translation.
  • Treat casual spacing as a documented source practice when necessary, but use joined forms for this guide's readable baseline.
