Egyptian بـ is a verbal marker, not a separate word equivalent to English do, am, or usually. It attaches before the person-marked imperfect: بكتب، بتكتب، بيكتب، بنكتب. Suffixes then attach after the verb, so one written word can express marker + person + action + object.
This page focuses on spelling and word boundaries; the b- formation guide explains the construction's discourse functions. The baseline is mainstream Cairene and joined edited colloquial spelling.
Compact paradigm: كتب “write”
| Subject | Joined form | Romanization | Visible structure |
|---|---|---|---|
The spaces and plus signs in the last column are analysis only. When typing a sentence, write the form in the second column as one word. Arabic ب joins to the following connectable letter automatically; no hyphen or invisible joiner is needed.
The order inside the word
The useful template is:
conjunction + b- marker + person prefix + stem + agreement ending + object clitic
Not every form fills every slot. In وبتكتبيها, for example, وـ means “and,” بـ is the imperfect marker, تـ...ـي marks feminine singular address, and ـها is the object “it/her.”
وإنتي بتكتبيها في الكراسة كل يوم.
wi-nti bitiktibīha fil-korrāsa koll yōm
And you write it in the notebook every day. (addressing a woman)
English places “you,” “write,” and “it” in separate words. Egyptian can identify the addressee and object inside the verb; the Arabic spelling preserves that package.
هو بيقراها وبيرجعها مكانها.
huwwa biyiʾrāha wi-biyiraggaʿha makānaha
He reads it and puts it back in its place.
Both coordinated verbs repeat بـ because each is an independently marked predicate. The conjunction attaches to the second form: و + بيرجعها.
Minimal contrast 1: بكتب and بيكتب
أنا بكتب التقرير قبل الاجتماع.
ʾana baktib it-taʾrīr ʾabl il-igtimāʿ
I write the report before the meeting.
هو بيكتب التقرير بعد الاجتماع.
huwwa biyiktib it-taʾrīr baʿd il-igtimāʿ
He writes the report after the meeting.
The ي in بيكتب is not an optional vowel letter inserted after بـ. It is the third-person person prefix. First-person بكتب lacks it. Writing every form as بيكتب erases subject agreement.
Minimal contrast 2: feminine singular and plural address
إنتي بتكتبي الاسم كامل.
ʾinti bitiktibi l-ism kāmil
You write the full name. (to a woman)
إنتوا بتكتبوا الأسامي بالترتيب.
ʾintu bitiktibu l-asāmi bit-tartīb
You all write the names in order.
Final ـي and ـوا belong to the same orthographic word as the marker and stem. They are agreement endings, not pronouns that should be separated.
When the word begins with two ب letters
The verb بعت “send” begins with ب. Adding first-person imperfect بـ therefore gives ببعت, with two real bāʾ letters.
ببعت الفاتورة للعميل أول الشهر.
babʿat il-fātūra lil-ʿamīl ʾawwil ish-shahr
I send the invoice to the client at the start of the month.
Deleting one ب would hide either the grammatical marker or the root-initial consonant. Doubling in the spelling is therefore informative, not untidy. The same principle applies when other clitics create visually repeated letters.
Negation and other material can wrap around the form
In ordinary finite negation, ما...ش can surround the entire b-imperfect host.
مابفهمش الخط الصغير من غير النضارة.
mabafhamsh il-khaṭṭ iṣ-ṣoghayyar min ghēr in-naḍḍāra
I can't understand the small print without my glasses.
مابيقولهاش قدام الناس.
mabiyiʾūlhāsh ʾuddām in-nās
He doesn't say it in front of people.
The negative prefix, بـ, person prefix, verb, object ـها, and negative ـش are all joined. The analysis is complex; the keyboard action is simple: type the letters consecutively.
First-person spelling and genuine variation
This guide writes بكتب، براجع، بفهم without an alif after بـ. Forms such as باكتب or بأكتب occur in Egyptian writing, especially when writers try to show the spoken vowel or preserve the bare form's hamza (informal/individual convention). They are recognition variants, not the baseline adopted here.
Do not extrapolate social identity from that choice. Platform habits, schooling, search conventions, and individual preference overlap across age, class, region, and community.
A realistic work message
أنا براجع الملف دلوقتي، وببعتلك النسخة الجديدة أول ما بخلص كل جزء. لو بتشوف ملاحظة مهمة، علم عليها.
ʾana barāgiʿ il-malaf dilwaʾti, wi-babʿatlak in-noskha l-gidīda ʾawwil ma bakhallaṣ koll gozʾ. law bitshūf molāḥẓa mohimma, ʿallim ʿalēha
I'm reviewing the file now, and I send you the new version whenever I finish each section. If you notice an important comment, mark it. (to a man)
The first b-imperfect is ongoing, the second describes a repeated workflow, and the form after أول ما is habitual within that workflow. Spelling them alike does not force one English tense translation.
Four proofreading diagnostics
- Find a standalone ب before an imperfect verb; in this construction, rejoin it.
- Check the person prefix after بـ: zero in house بكتب, تـ in بتكتب, يـ in بيكتب, نـ in بنكتب.
- Keep agreement endings and object clitics attached: بتكتبيها، بيكتبوه.
- Search for Persian ک ی and for Latin hyphens copied from romanized analysis.
Common Mistakes
Separating the marker
❌ هي ب تراجع الحساب كل أسبوع.
Incorrect segmentation—the b- marker and person-marked verb form one word.
✅ هي بتراجع الحساب قبل الدفع.
hiyya bitirāgiʿ il-ḥisāb ʾabl id-dafʿ
She reviews the bill before payment.
Adding ي to every person
❌ أنا بيكتب الملاحظات في الدفتر.
Incorrect agreement—بيكتب is third-person masculine, not first person.
✅ أنا بسجل الملاحظات في دفتري.
ʾana basaggil il-molāḥẓāt fi daftarī
I record the notes in my notebook.
Deleting a genuine repeated ب
❌ ببعت فيها باء زيادة، فلازم تبقى بعت.
Incorrect analysis—the first ب is the imperfect marker and the second begins the verb ‘send.’
✅ أنا ببعتلهم تذكير قبل المعاد.
ʾana babʿatlohom tazkīr ʾabl il-miʿād
I send them a reminder before the appointment.
Replacing the Arabic form with an analytical label
❌ اكتب بي شرطة قبل الفعل بدل ما توصلها.
Incorrect writing strategy—hyphenated romanized analysis is not Arabic orthography.
✅ وصل حرف الباء بالفعل، وافصله بس في الشرح.
waṣṣal ḥarf il-bāʾ bil-fiʿl, wi-fṣilo bass fish-sharḥ
Join the letter bāʾ to the verb, and separate it only in the explanation.
Key Takeaways
- Write بكتب، بتكتب، بيكتب، بنكتب as single words.
- The person prefix comes after بـ; endings and object clitics remain attached after the stem.
- A repeated letter can represent two morphemes: ببعت is correct and transparent.
- Joined spelling does not reduce the range of habitual, ongoing, generic, and contextual meanings carried by the Egyptian b-imperfect.
