Two noun phrases joined by و can form one coordinated subject, but agreement depends on where that coordination sits and how the speaker construes it. Before the verb, a human coordination normally triggers resolved plural agreement. After the verb, mainstream Cairene permits both full plural agreement and singular agreement with the first conjunct. That first-conjunct option belongs specifically to coordination: it must not be generalized into an MSA-style rule that puts a singular verb before an ordinary human-plural noun phrase.
Coordination also resolves person: “I + anyone” calls for first-person plural, while “you + someone else” calls for second-person plural. None of these choices can be predicted by blindly agreeing with the nearest noun. Review the ordinary preverbal pattern on subject-first agreement before adding a second conjunct.
Rule 1: a preverbal human coordination takes plural agreement
When two named people form the topic, the following verb treats them as a plural group. Mixed-gender groups use the general spoken plural form.
سارة وكريم وصلوا بدري عشان يجهزوا القاعة
sāra wi-karīm wiṣlu badri ʿashān yigahhizu l-ʾāʿa
Sara and Karim arrived early to prepare the room.
منى وداليا راجعوا الأرقام قبل ما يبعتوها
mona wi-dālya rāgʿu l-ʾarʾām ʾabl ma yibʿatūha
Mona and Dalia checked the figures before sending them.
Everyday Cairo uses the same general plural verb for an all-female human group (informal). Formal feminine-dual or feminine-plural morphology belongs to an MSA agreement system and should not be inserted into these colloquial clauses.
مين راجع العرض النهائي؟
mīn rāgeʿ il-ʿarḍ in-nihāʾi?
Who reviewed the final presentation?
سارة وكريم راجعوه سوا قبل الاجتماع
sāra wi-karīm rāgʿūh sawa ʾabl il-igtimāʿ
Sara and Karim reviewed it together before the meeting. (their identities answer the question, so the coordinated subject comes first)
Rule 2: coordinated pronouns resolve by person hierarchy
First person outranks second and third for agreement; second person outranks third. The order of the conjuncts can reflect politeness, contrast, or discourse, but it does not change the resolved person.
| Coordinated subject | Resolved agreement | Example predicate |
|---|---|---|
| أنا وإنت | 1st plural | حنراجع |
| أنا وهو | 1st plural | حنراجع |
| إنت وهو | 2nd plural | حتراجعوا |
| هي وهو | 3rd plural | حيراجعوا |
أنا وإنت حنقابل العميل بعد الضهر
ʾana wi-nta ḥaniʾābel il-ʿamīl baʿd iḍ-ḍohr
You and I will meet the client in the afternoon.
إنت وهو حتخلصوا الجزء الأول النهارده
inta wi-huwwa ḥatikhallaṣu l-gozʾ il-ʾawwil in-naharda
You and he will finish the first part today.
English speakers sometimes choose the verb from the nearest pronoun because English has little visible person agreement in the plural. Egyptian future and imperfect prefixes make the resolved group overt.
Rule 3: verb-first coordination has a special first-conjunct option
In event presentation, a singular verb can precede a coordinated human subject and agree in gender with the first conjunct. Reversing the conjuncts can therefore change that singular form. This is first-conjunct agreement: the verb relates locally to the first singular name while و adds another participant. It is not evidence that a singular verb is the ordinary Cairene form before a single plural phrase such as الولاد.
وصل كريم وسلمى بعد بداية العرض
wiṣil karīm wi-salma baʿd bidāyit il-ʿarḍ
Karim and Salma arrived after the presentation started. (masculine singular agreement with the first conjunct Karim)
وصلت سلمى وكريم بعد بداية العرض
wiṣlit salma wi-karīm baʿd bidāyit il-ʿarḍ
Salma and Karim arrived after the presentation started. (feminine singular agreement with the first conjunct Salma)
Full resolved plural before the coordination is also real Cairo, especially when both participants are jointly foregrounded or the verb has an integrated plural reading:
وصلوا سلمى وكريم مع بعض
wiṣlu salma wi-karīm maʿ baʿḍ
Salma and Karim arrived together. (full plural verb-first agreement, informal)
Speaker, verb, planning, and prosody affect the choice. A pause after وصلوا can instead yield an afterthought structure: “They arrived—Salma and Karim.” Without a pause, full resolved agreement can be integrated. Keep both analyses separate from ordinary human-plural agreement: mainstream Cairo uses plural agreement in وصلوا الولاد, while وصل كريم وسلمى is licensed by the internal coordination.
Rule 4: named nonhumans can behave differently from one lexical plural
A lexical nonhuman plural normally takes feminine-singular agreement: الأجهزة باظت. Coordination explicitly names separate entities and often individuates them enough to support plural agreement.
الطابعة والكمبيوتر باظوا في نفس الأسبوع
iṭ-ṭābʿa wi-l-kombyūtar bāẓu fi nafs il-ʾusbūʿ
The printer and the computer both broke in the same week. (two individuated objects)
الأجهزة باظت بعد قطع الكهربا
il-ʾag-hiza bāẓit baʿd ʾaṭʿ il-kahraba
The equipment broke after the power cut. (ordinary nonhuman set, feminine singular)
This is not a simple rule that و always creates masculine plural agreement. Coordinated mass expressions or items construed as one package can favor singular agreement, and speakers vary. The contrast is best understood through individuation: two separately tracked objects invite plural agreement more readily than one lexical set.
Rule 5: distinguish subject coordination from clause coordination
One و can join two noun phrases under one predicate, or two full clauses with separate predicates.
سارة وكريم راجعوا العقد
sāra wi-karīm rāgʿu l-ʿaʾd
Sara and Karim reviewed the contract. (one coordinated subject)
سارة راجعت العقد وكريم كلم المحامي
sāra rāgʿit il-ʿaʾd wi-karīm kallim il-muḥāmi
Sara reviewed the contract, and Karim called the lawyer. (two coordinated clauses)
The second كريم controls its own predicate. A pause or comma may help readers, but the repeated predicate structure—not punctuation alone—distinguishes clause coordination.
Rule 6: a fronted coordinated object still needs resumption
Fronted coordination is not automatically a subject. If the coordinated phrase is the object topic, a plural suffix normally resumes it.
العقد والفاتورة، راجعتهم امبارح قبل ما أمشي
il-ʿaʾd wi-l-fātūra, rāgeʿtuhum imbāriḥ ʾabl ma ʾamshi
The contract and the invoice—I reviewed them yesterday before leaving.
The suffix ـهم carries the object role. With nonhuman lexical plurals, feminine singular ـها is often neutral; here the coordination presents two separately named objects and plural resumption is coherent.
Coordination, negation, and scope
A single negated plural predicate normally scopes over the whole coordinated subject. If one conjunct is corrected or contrasted, repeat enough structure to make the intended split clear.
سارة وكريم ماحضروش الاجتماع
sāra wi-karīm ma-ḥaḍarūsh il-igtimāʿ
Sara and Karim didn’t attend the meeting. (negation over the coordinated subject)
سارة ماحضرتش، إنما كريم وصل في النص
sāra ma-ḥaḍaritsh, ʾinnama karīm wiṣil fi n-noṣṣ
Sara didn’t attend, but Karim arrived halfway through.
English and under negation can be logically ambiguous. Egyptian speakers use prosody, repetition, and contrast particles to prevent the wrong grouping.
Register and variation
Formal MSA has prescriptive patterns for agreement before and after coordinated subjects (formal). Cairene retains a coordination-specific first-conjunct option but also permits full resolved plural verb-first forms and colloquial person resolution (informal). Unlike MSA, it does not productively generalize masculine- or feminine-singular verb-first agreement to ordinary human-plural noun phrases. Newsreading, sermons, scripted drama, and school performance may shift toward that broader formal pattern (formal/performance).
Full-resolved versus first-conjunct rates and nonhuman resolution vary across Cairo communities, age, class, education, and speech planning, as well as Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, and Bedouin varieties (regional/social). These are distributional differences, not evidence that coordination is ungrammatical in one variety.
Common Mistakes
1. Using singular agreement after a preverbal human coordination.
❌ سارة وكريم وصل بدري
Incorrect as a neutral subject-first clause—the coordinated human topic requires plural وصلوا.
✅ سارة وكريم وصلوا قبل باقي الفريق
sāra wi-karīm wiṣlu ʾabl bāʾi l-farīʾ
Sara and Karim arrived before the rest of the team.
2. Agreeing only with the nearest pronoun.
❌ أنا وهو حيراجعوا العرض
Incorrect—coordination containing أنا requires first-person plural agreement.
✅ أنا وهو حنراجع العرض بعد الغدا
ʾana wi-huwwa ḥanirāgeʿ il-ʿarḍ baʿd il-ghada
He and I will review the presentation after lunch.
3. Extending individuated plural agreement to every nonhuman plural.
❌ الأجهزة باظوا بعد العاصفة
Non-baseline for the ordinary set reading—lexical nonhuman plural الأجهزة normally takes feminine singular.
✅ الأجهزة باظت بعد العاصفة بالليل
il-ʾag-hiza bāẓit baʿd il-ʿāṣfa bi-l-lel
The equipment broke after the storm at night.
4. Fronting coordinated objects without a clitic.
❌ العقد والفاتورة، راجعت امبارح
Incorrect for the intended object-topic reading—the verb needs a plural resumptive suffix.
✅ العقد والفاتورة، راجعتهم قبل الاجتماع
il-ʿaʾd wi-l-fātūra, rāgeʿtuhum ʾabl il-igtimāʿ
The contract and invoice—I reviewed them before the meeting.
5. Generalizing first-conjunct agreement to an ordinary plural subject.
❌ وصل الولاد بدري
Not the mainstream Cairo production baseline for one human-plural subject; this imports formal partial agreement.
✅ وصلوا الولاد بدري
wiṣlu l-wilād badri
The boys arrived early. (ordinary Cairo full agreement before a human plural)
Key Takeaways
- Preverbal human coordinations normally trigger plural agreement.
- Person resolves across the whole group: first person outranks second, and second outranks third.
- Verb-first coordinations permit first-conjunct or full resolved agreement; the singular option is specific to coordination.
- Named nonhumans may take plural agreement when coordination individuates them; lexical nonhuman plurals retain the feminine-singular baseline.
- Fronted coordinated objects require resumption.
