Calques and Semantic Extension

A loanword imports a form; a calque reproduces a foreign expression with existing Arabic material. غسيل مخ literally “brain washing” is an established expression for “brainwashing,” while غسيل الأموال literally “washing of the money” is the conventional formal expression for “money laundering.” Semantic extension works inside one word: حساب already meant “account/calculation” and now routinely names an online account as well.

Modern Egyptian gets many such expressions through edited Arabic, journalism, translation, technology, and bilingual interaction. Some settle into ordinary Cairo speech; others remain institutional or deliberately formal. A transparent English translation is not enough: community use decides whether the new phrase or sense exists.

The last row is normal. Vocabulary can be formal in one shape and conversational in another without either being linguistically defective.

Diagnostic 1: a calque must be conventional, not merely translatable

غسيل مخ is established in Egyptian conversation (informal/neutral). غسيل الأموال is common in news, legal, and professional language (formal/institutional). Their grammar is Arabic, but the compound meanings cannot be recovered by translating each noun independently.

البرنامج ده غسيل مخ، وكل حلقة بتكرر نفس الكلام.

il-barnāmig da ghasīl mokhkh, wi-koll ḥalʾa bitkarrar nafs il-kalām.

That program is brainwashing; every episode repeats the same message. (literally: brain washing; informal)

النيابة بتحقق في قضية غسيل أموال كبيرة.

in-niyāba bitḥaʾʾaʾ fi ʾaḍiyyit ghasīl ʾamwāl kibīra.

The prosecution is investigating a major money-laundering case. (literally: money washing; news/legal register)

English breaking news does not license an invented كسر الأخبار. Established formal Arabic uses خبر عاجل “urgent news item,” while Egyptian broadcasters may also say عاجل as an on-screen label.

ظهر خبر عاجل عن إغلاق الطريق الدائري.

ẓahar khabar ʿāgil ʿan ʾighlāʾ iṭ-ṭarīʾ id-dāyri.

A breaking-news item appeared about the closure of the Ring Road. (literally: an urgent news item; media register)

💡
A good calque sounds established to speakers in a definable domain. Being easy to translate back into English is not evidence that Egyptian uses it.

Diagnostic 2: semantic extension preserves Egyptian morphology

When حساب means an online account, it remains masculine and keeps the plural حسابات. منصة extends from a physical platform to a digital platform while remaining feminine with plural منصات. The new sense does not import English plural or agreement.

عملت حساب جديد عشان أتابع الطلبات.

ʿamilt ḥisāb gidīd ʿashān ʾatābiʿ iṭ-ṭalabāt.

I created a new account so I could track the orders.

الحسابات القديمة مقفولة من أول السنة.

il-ḥisābāt il-ʾadīma maʾfūla min ʾawwil is-sana.

The old accounts have been closed since the start of the year.

المنصة الجديدة سهلة، بس لسه فيها مشاكل تقنية.

il-manaṣṣa l-gidīda sahla, bass lissa fīha mashākil tiʾniyya.

The new platform is easy to use, but it still has technical problems.

The nonhuman plural الحسابات triggers feminine singular agreement القديمة مقفولة. English plurality does not override Egyptian agreement.

A word family extended by digital use

The inherited family تابع / بيتابع / متابعة / متابع developed ordinary media and digital senses. The morphology was already Arabic; the domain expanded.

MemberTraditional/general rangeContemporary extension
تابع / بيتابعfollow, monitor, keep up withfollow a page, series, or online account
متابعةfollowing, monitoring, follow-upengagement/following; continued tracking
متابعone who follows or monitorsfollower
متابعينhuman plural followers/observersonline followers

بتابع الصفحة عشان بتنزل مواعيد الحفلات بدري.

batābiʿ iṣ-ṣafḥa ʿashān bitinazzil mawāʿīd il-ḥafalāt badri.

I follow the page because it posts the concert dates early.

الصفحة كسبت متابعين كتير بعد الفيديو الأخير.

iṣ-ṣafḥa kisbit mutābʿīn kitīr baʿd il-fidyu l-ʾakhīr.

The page gained many followers after the latest video.

محتاجين متابعة يومية للطلبات المتأخرة.

miḥtagīn mutābaʿa yomiyya liṭ-ṭalabāt il-mitʾakhkhara.

We need daily follow-up on the delayed orders. (professional conversation)

The digital meaning did not create a new productive suffix. It selected existing family members and gave them a domain-specific conventional use.

Diagnostic 3: formal calques often enter speech as complete chunks

Expressions such as الذكاء الاصطناعي “artificial intelligence,” حقوق الإنسان “human rights,” and وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي “social-media channels” are built from Arabic material and are prominent in edited Arabic (formal/media/academic). Cairene speakers may place those complete phrases inside an otherwise Egyptian sentence.

الشركة بدأت تستخدم الذكاء الاصطناعي في خدمة العملاء.

ish-shirka badaʾit tistakhdim iz-zakāʾ il-iṣṭināʿi fi khidmit il-ʿomalāʾ.

The company has started using artificial intelligence in customer service. (formal technical term inside Egyptian syntax)

التقرير بيتكلم عن حقوق الإنسان في أماكن الشغل.

it-taʾrīr biyitkallim ʿan ḥuʾūʾ il-ʾinsān fi ʾamākin ish-shoghl.

The report discusses human rights in workplaces. (formal/institutional term, conversational frame)

وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي غيرت طريقة إعلان الشركات.

wasāyil it-tawāṣul il-igtimāʿi ghayyarit ṭarīʾit ʾiʿlān ish-sharikāt.

Social media changed how companies advertise. (literally: means of social communication; formal/media wording)

Their internal definiteness and adjective placement remain Arabic. English word order does not produce اجتماعي تواصل وسائل.

Diagnostic 4: loans and calques can coexist

Conversational urban speakers often use السوشيال ميديا beside formal وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي, and إيه آي beside الذكاء الاصطناعي. The choice can index age, professional community, audience, or the surrounding discourse.

بننزل الإعلان على السوشيال ميديا قبل التلفزيون.

bininazzil il-ʾiʿlān ʿala s-soshyāl mīdya ʾabl it-tilifizyōn.

We put the advertisement on social media before television. (informal workplace speech)

في النسخة الرسمية حنكتب وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي.

fi n-nuskha r-rasmiyya ḥanktib wasāyil it-tawāṣul il-igtimāʿi.

In the official version, we'll write وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي. (formal editorial choice)

💡
Choose the form by domain and audience. A loan may be the unmarked conversational choice while a calque is expected in an official document.

A contemporary media example

المنصة أعلنت إن عدد المتابعين زاد بعد إطلاق الخدمة الجديدة.

il-manaṣṣa ʾaʿlanit inn ʿadad il-mutābʿīn zād baʿd ʾiṭlāʾ il-khidma l-gidīda.

The platform announced that its follower count rose after the new service launched. (contemporary media/business register)

This original media-style sentence uses extended منصة and متابعين, but its clause frame أعلنت إن is compatible with educated Egyptian speech. A sustained MSA bulletin would adjust more than the vocabulary.

Productivity and borrowing

Semantic extension remains productive because speakers repeatedly apply familiar words to new domains. It is not unlimited: an individual metaphor becomes vocabulary only when a community conventionalizes it. Phrase calques are even less safely generated word for word; translators, institutions, and media communities stabilize particular versions. Established loans can be equally native to a domain. See how borrowed stems enter Egyptian morphology in borrowed-root families.

Register and variation

The production baseline is mainstream urban Cairo. Edited الذكاء الاصطناعي، حقوق الإنسان، وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي are (formal/media/academic); السوشيال ميديا is widespread (informal/professional). Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, class-, age-, and community-linked speakers may differ in their balance of inherited terms, formal calques, and English or French loans (regional/social). Comedians and advertisers can exaggerate translationese or code-switching for effect (performance/advertising).

Common Mistakes

Translating an English compound before checking usage

❌ المذيع قال كسر الأخبار.

Incorrect: كسر الأخبار is a word-for-word invention, not the conventional expression for breaking news.

✅ المذيع أعلن خبر عاجل في نص البرنامج.

il-muzīʿ ʾaʿlan khabar ʿāgil fi noṣṣ il-barnāmig.

The presenter announced breaking news halfway through the program.

Copying English word order

❌ الشركة نشرت اجتماعي تواصل وسائل جديدة.

Incorrect: the established Arabic expression has noun–idafa–adjective order.

✅ الشركة اختارت وسائل تواصل اجتماعي جديدة.

ish-shirka ikhtārit wasāyil tawāṣul igtimāʿi gidīda.

The company chose new social-media channels.

Adding an English plural ending to an extended noun

❌ عندي تلات حسابس للشغل.

Incorrect: online حساب keeps the established Arabic plural حسابات.

✅ عندي تلات حسابات للشغل وكل واحد ليه كلمة سر.

ʿandi talāt ḥisābāt lish-shoghl wi-koll wāḥid līh kilmit sirr.

I have three work accounts, each with its own password.

Assuming every familiar word can take any new sense

❌ أي شبكة ينفع معناها إنترنت في كل سياق.

Incorrect: شبكة has several conventional senses, and context does not make every use digital.

✅ شبكة المكتب وقعت، لكن شبكة الصياد سليمة.

shabakit il-maktab waʾaʿit, lākin shabakit iṣ-ṣayyād salīma.

The office network went down, but the fisherman's net is intact.

Treating an established loan as failed Arabic

❌ السوشيال ميديا غلط لمجرد إنها مستعارة.

Incorrect: origin alone does not determine grammaticality or appropriateness.

✅ السوشيال ميديا عادية في كلام فرق التسويق.

is-soshyāl mīdya ʿādiyya fi kalām firaʾ it-taswīʾ.

السوشيال ميديا is ordinary in the speech of marketing teams. (informal/professional)

Key Takeaways

  • Calques reproduce an established expression with Arabic material; semantic extension gives an existing word a conventional new sense.
  • New senses retain Egyptian gender, plural, agreement, and clitic behavior.
  • Formal calques can enter Egyptian clauses as complete technical or institutional chunks.
  • Loans and calques often coexist because they serve different audiences and registers.
  • Never create a calque solely because its English components are individually translatable.
