Making Verbs from Loans

Egyptian can turn selected borrowed material into full verbs. فرمل / بيفرمل “braked / brakes,” برمج / بيبرمج “programmed / programs,” and digital شيّر / بيشيّر “shared / shares” all carry Egyptian aspect, person marking, negation, and clitics. Yet this does not mean any foreign noun can be dropped into a productive template.

Verbhood is demonstrated by a recurring Egyptian paradigm and stable usage, not by resemblance to English. Other loans remain nouns after a support verb—عمل داونلود “did a download”—or appear as short-lived code-switches in one community. The broader evidence test is developed under borrowed stems inside Arabic patterns.

Four integration strategies

StrategyOutput shapeExampleStatus
Integrated four-consonant verbperfect + b-imperfect + verbal nounفرمل / بيفرمل / فرملةordinary and established
Reshaped denominative familyverb, verbal noun, participant nounبرمج / برمجة / مبرمجtechnical, fully integrated
Recent pattern-like loan verbEgyptian verb morphology around a borrowed baseشيّر / بيشيّرinformal digital speech
Support verb + loan nounعمل + borrowed event nounعمل داونلودcommunity- and domain-sensitive

These strategies can coexist for one concept. A speaker may say نزّل الملف, عمل داونلود للملف, or use a more English-heavy insertion according to audience and workplace.

Diagnostic 1: require a recurring Egyptian family

The strongest evidence is a set with several conventional members. فرمل provides a clear family built around four consonants.

MemberFunctionMeaning
فرملperfect stembraked
بيفرملb-imperfectbrakes / is braking
فرملةfeminine verbal nounbraking
مفرملparticiple/result expressionstopped short; brakes applied

السواق فرمل قبل الإشارة بمترين.

is-sawwāʾ farmal ʾabl il-ʾishāra bi-mitrēn.

The driver braked two meters before the traffic light.

هو بيفرمل بدري لما الشارع يبقى زحمة.

huwwa biyifarmil badri lamma sh-shāriʿ yibʾa zaḥma.

He brakes early when the street is congested.

الفرملة المفاجئة خلت القهوة تتكب.

il-farmala l-mufāgʾa khallit il-ʾahwa titkabb.

The sudden braking made the coffee spill.

The verbal noun فرملة is feminine and takes المفاجئة. Its borrowed history does not suspend Egyptian agreement.

💡
One attested imperative or social-media spelling does not prove a whole paradigm. Look for a stable perfect–imperfect pair and additional family members before treating a base as an integrated verb.

Diagnostic 2: patterns describe a loan after integration

Digital شيّر has medial doubling and behaves like an Egyptian verb, but analyzing it as an inherited Form II automatically invents a historical root family speakers need not possess. The safest description is synchronic: the borrowed base has entered a pattern-like Cairene verb shape.

شير الصورة الأصلية من غير الفلتر.

shayyir iṣ-ṣūra l-ʾaṣliyya min ghēr il-filtir.

Share the original photo without the filter. (informal digital speech; to a man)

هي بتشير أخبار المعرض على صفحتها.

hiyya bitishayyir ʾakhbār il-maʿraḍ ʿala ṣafḥitha.

She shares news about the exhibition on her page.

ماشيرتش الفيديو عشان فيه معلومات شخصية.

mashayyartish il-fidyu ʿashān fīh maʿlūmāt shakhṣiyya.

I didn't share the video because it contains personal information.

The negative is one Egyptian word: ما + شيّرت + ش. English share supplies the lexical base, but Egyptian supplies subject marking and the negative envelope.

Unvocalized بيشير can also represent inherited بيشير “points/indicates,” related to أشار. Context and vowel shape distinguish the two; orthography alone need not.

المهندس بيشير للسهم الأحمر في الرسم.

il-muhandis biyishīr lis-sahm il-ʾaḥmar fi r-rasm.

The engineer is pointing to the red arrow in the diagram. (inherited verb, not digital ‘share’)

Diagnostic 3: family members can be productive unevenly

The technical family برمج، بيبرمج، برمجة، مبرمج is well integrated. The participant noun agrees for gender and number: مبرمج، مبرمجة، مبرمجين. Not every imaginable derivative is equally frequent, however.

الفريق برمج النظام عشان يبعت تنبيه تلقائي.

il-farīʾ barmag in-niẓām ʿashān yibʿat tanbīh tilʾāʾi.

The team programmed the system to send an automatic alert.

هي مبرمجة شاطرة وبتشرح الكود ببساطة.

hiyya mubarmiga shāṭra wi-bitishraḥ il-kōd bibasāṭa.

She's a skilled programmer and explains the code simply.

البرمجة محتاجة اختبار قبل ما النسخة تنزل.

il-barmaga miḥtāga ikhtibār ʾabl ma n-nuskha tinzil.

The programming needs testing before the version is released.

Mainstream Cairo pronounces ج as /g/: barmag, mubarmiga, barmaga. /dʒ/ can occur in formal reading, other regional systems, or professional performance (formal/regional/community).

Diagnostic 4: support verbs reveal incomplete integration

Many foreign event nouns enter a clause after عمل “do/make” rather than becoming independent verbs. This is a real Egyptian strategy, not grammatical laziness. It lets the support verb carry person, aspect, and negation while the loan names the event.

عملت داونلود للملف قبل ما النت يقطع.

ʿamilt dāwnlōd lil-malaff ʾabl ma n-nett yiʾṭaʿ.

I downloaded the file before the internet dropped. (literally: did a download; informal technical speech)

في الشرح الرسمي حنقول نزل الملف على الجهاز.

fi sh-sharḥ ir-rasmi ḥanʾūl nazzil il-malaff ʿala l-gihāz.

In the formal instructions, we'll say ‘download the file to the device.’ (using an established Arabic verb)

Younger technical teams may use a more directly verbalized English base (informal/professional/age-linked). Other speakers prefer عمل داونلود or native نزّل. Record the choice for the community rather than inventing an unlabeled universal paradigm.

Diagnostic 5: lexical government comes with the new verb

An integrated verb needs an attested complement frame. Borrowed شيّر normally takes the shared item directly and may add على + platform/page. You cannot copy English share with mechanically into every Egyptian context.

شيرت الإعلان على جروب السكان امبارح.

shayyart il-ʾiʿlān ʿala grūb is-sukkān imbāriḥ.

I shared the announcement in the residents' group yesterday.

شيرته معاها بعد ما خدت موافقة صاحبه.

shayyartu maʿāha baʿd ma khadit muwāfaʾit ṣāḥbu.

I shared it with her after getting its owner's permission.

Here direct object ـه attaches to the verb, while معاها introduces the recipient. Loan origin does not license English spacing or clitic order.

Native and borrowed options are not exact duplicates

Digital شيّر اللينك is concise and socially ordinary among many urban speakers (informal/digital). شارك الرابط belongs more readily to instructions, interface localization, and formal professional language (formal/technical). Everyday ابعت اللينك “send the link” may be the most natural choice when the action is transfer rather than public sharing.

في البوست حنكتب شير اللينك مع أصحابك.

fi l-bōst ḥanktib shayyir il-līnk maʿ ʾaṣḥābak.

In the post we'll write, ‘Share the link with your friends.’ (informal digital call to action)

في واجهة الموقع مكتوب شارك الرابط.

fi wāghit il-mawʾiʿ maktūb shārik ir-rābiṭ.

The website interface says ‘Share the link.’ (formal-neutral localization)

💡
A native alternative can differ in register or event structure. Do not assume شيّر، شارك، ابعت are freely interchangeable just because English may translate each with share.

A contemporary media example

الصفحة شيرت الفيديو، وبعد ساعة مسحته من غير توضيح.

iṣ-ṣafḥa shayyarit il-fidyu, wi-baʿd sāʿa masaḥitu min ghēr tawḍīḥ.

The page shared the video, then deleted it an hour later without explanation. (contemporary digital-media language)

Feminine subject الصفحة triggers perfect شيّرت. This is Egyptian agreement around a borrowed stem, not an English verb left unchanged.

Register and variation

فرمل is broadly established (informal/neutral); برمج is integrated technical vocabulary (professional/academic); شيّر is conspicuous digital borrowing (informal, age- and community-sensitive). Older تلفن “phoned” is recognized by many speakers but competes with everyday كلم and may sound age- or speaker-specific. Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, class-, and community-linked varieties differ in which recent bases they verbalize. Advertising and comedy may heighten English-heavy verbs for persona (performance).

Common Mistakes

Verbalizing every loan mechanically

❌ موبلت صاحبي عشان أتأكد من المعاد.

Incorrect: موبايل does not automatically license an everyday verb موبل for ‘called.’

✅ كلمت صاحبي على الموبايل عشان أتأكد من المعاد.

kallimt ṣāḥbi ʿala l-mobāyl ʿashān ʾatʾakkad min il-maʿād.

I called my friend on the phone to confirm the appointment.

Treating a borrowed shape as proof of an inherited root

❌ شير لازم تكون من الصيغة التانية لجذر ش-ي-ر قديم.

Incorrect: current pattern-like behavior does not prove an inherited triliteral family.

✅ شير فعل مستعار داخل في تصريف مصري.

shayyar fiʿl mustaʿār dākhil fi taṣrīf maṣri.

شيّر is a borrowed verb integrated into Egyptian inflection. (analytical statement)

Leaving an integrated imperfect unmarked

❌ هو شير الأخبار كل يوم.

Incorrect for a habitual Egyptian clause: the integrated imperfect needs b-.

✅ هو بيشير أخبار الفريق كل يوم على الجروب.

huwwa biyishayyir ʾakhbār il-farīʾ koll yōm ʿala l-grūb.

He shares the team's news in the group every day.

Pasting an English past ending into Arabic

❌ أنا شيريد الصورة امبارح.

Incorrect: an integrated loan verb takes Egyptian perfect morphology, not English -ed.

✅ أنا شيرت الصورة امبارح بعد ما سألت صاحبتها.

ʾana shayyart iṣ-ṣūra imbāriḥ baʿd ma saʾalt ṣāḥbitha.

I shared the photo yesterday after asking its owner.

Rejecting an established loan verb on origin alone

❌ فرمل فعل غلط لأن أصله مستعار.

Incorrect: borrowed history does not prevent full Egyptian verbal integration.

✅ السواق فرمل بهدوء ونزلنا قدام الباب.

is-sawwāʾ farmal bi-hudūʾ wi-nizilna ʾuddām il-bāb.

The driver braked gently, and we got out in front of the door.

Key Takeaways

  • A recurring Egyptian family, not resemblance to English, establishes an integrated loan verb.
  • Borrowed stems can take b-imperfect, person marking, ما...ش, clitics, verbal nouns, and participles.
  • Pattern labels describe synchronic shapes but do not prove inherited roots or predictable meanings.
  • Support عمل + loan noun remains productive when a base has not stabilized as a verb.
  • Register, age, profession, and community determine whether a native verb, integrated loan, or code-switch is natural.
