Back-Formation and Reanalysis

Back-formation runs derivation in an unexpected direction: speakers analyze an established word as though it contained a reusable base, then build a new verb or family from that analysis. In Arabic’s root-and-pattern environment, a borrowed noun can be reinterpreted as a set of consonants and yield a quadriliteral verb. برنامج “program” and the modern family برمج، برمجة، مبرمج provide the clearest technical example.

The label describes a historical or synchronic relationship; it is not an instruction for inventing words. Most loans never yield a productive verb family, and plausible consonants are not enough.

The برنامج family

برنامج is an established noun of non-Arabic origin. Modern Arabic extracted ب-ر-م-ج and built a productive technical family. Mainstream Cairo pronounces ج as g: barnāmag, barmag, barmaga, mobarmig.

المبرمجة خلصت برمجة الجزء الخاص بالدفع.

il-mobarmiga khallaṣit barmagit il-gozʾ il-khāṣṣ bid-dafʿ.

The programmer finished programming the payment section.

البرامج الجديدة محتاجة اختبار قبل النشر.

il-barāmig il-gidīda moḥtāga ikhtibār ʾabl in-nashr.

The new programs need testing before release.

الشركة بتبيع برمجيات لإدارة المخازن.

ish-shirka bitbīʿ barmagiyyāt li-ʾidārit il-makhāzin.

The company sells warehouse-management software. (professional)

Gender and number belong to the output word: برمجة is feminine; مبرمجة names a woman; nonhuman برمجيات جديدة takes feminine singular adjective agreement. The history of برنامج does not suspend Egyptian agreement.

💡
A back-formed family becomes real through repeated attested use across several members. One borrowed noun plus an imaginable consonant sequence is not enough.

Reanalysis can create several output shapes

Technical Arabic contains other noun-to-family relationships. أرشيف “archive” supports أرشف / أرشفة / مؤرشف (professional/formal). Egyptian computing speech also uses فورمات “format” beside integrated فرمت / فرمتة (informal technical). Their vowel patterns and meanings are lexical facts.

Input nounReanalyzed outputRegister
أرشيفأرشف، أرشفة، مؤرشفprofessional/formal
فورماتفرمت، فرمتةinformal technical
برنامجبرمج، برمجة، مبرمجbroad technical

الفريق خلص أرشفة العقود القديمة الأسبوع ده.

il-farīʾ khallaṣ ʾarshafit il-ʿoʾūd il-ʾadīma l-ʾosbūʿ da.

The team finished archiving the old contracts this week. (professional)

فرمت اللابتوب بعد ما نقل كل الملفات.

farmit il-lābtob baʿd ma naʾal koll il-malafāt.

He formatted the laptop after moving all the files. (informal technical)

فرمت may be analyzed by speakers through both the English verb format and the Egyptian noun فورمات. Real contact morphology often permits more than one historical account; the attested Egyptian forms matter more for learners than a falsely certain origin story.

Reanalysis is not simple letter deletion

Back-formation does not mean removing any apparent prefix or suffix. برنامج did not yield a verb by merely chopping off a visible ending. Speakers mapped a conventional meaning onto a quadriliteral shape that fits existing Arabic morphology. The output then developed its own vowels and derivatives.

المبرمج غير البرنامج من غير ما يغير قاعدة البيانات.

il-mobarmig ghayyar il-barnāmag min gher ma yighayyar ʾāʿdit il-bayānāt.

The programmer changed the program without changing the database.

The coexistence of مبرمج and برنامج shows the relationship; their surface vowels are not identical. Similarly, initial أ in أرشيف is not simply retained in every output cell.

Borrowed input versus native-base coinage

Compare أرشفة from borrowed أرشيف with learned رقمنة from inherited رقم “number.” Both are modern quadriliteral-looking process nouns, but only the first depends on a borrowed lexical input. The second extends native material analogically.

بدأنا رقمنة الصور وبعدها أرشفة النسخ الأصلية.

badaʾna raʾmanit iṣ-ṣowar wi-baʿdaha ʾarshafit in-nosakh il-ʾaṣliyya.

We began digitizing the photographs and then archiving the originals. (professional)

Calling both words “Pattern I from a normal inherited root” would erase the difference in input history. Calling both foreign would erase the Arabic derivational work.

Productivity has a lexical gate

An established loan may take a plural or possessive suffix without yielding any verb at all. كمبيوتر / كمبيوترات / كمبيوتري is fully integrated as a noun, but ordinary Cairo has no general verb كمتر. In contrast, فرمل has a complete everyday verb family. See Borrowed Stems inside Arabic Patterns for that integration scale.

كمبيوتري قديم، بس لسه بيشغل البرامج الجديدة.

kombyūtari ʾadīm, bass lissa biyishaghghal il-barāmig il-gidīda.

My computer is old, but it still runs the new programs.

No missing verb is implied. Egyptian can express the event with شغّل، استخدم، اشتغل على or another attested frame.

💡
Test a proposed reanalysis against a family: verb, action noun, agent/result noun, actual meanings, and community use. If only one guessed form exists, do not teach it as productive.

A contemporary media example

الإعلان بيقول إن الشركة بتدور على مبرمج عنده خبرة في برمجة التطبيقات.

il-ʾiʿlān biyʾūl inn ish-shirka bitdawwar ʿala mobarmig ʿandu khibra fi barmagit it-taṭbīʾāt.

The ad says the company is looking for a programmer with experience in app development.

This natural job-ad summary contains three members of the family without requiring a full verb paradigm.

Register and variation

برمجة is widely shared across Egyptian technical communities. أرشفة is more institutional, and فرمتة more conversational. Formal media may pronounce ج in learned items as /dʒ/, but mainstream Cairo normally has /g/ (formal-performance contrast). Age, sector, education, and degree of English contact affect which family members speakers use (age/class/community); regional speakers may share the terms with different phonetic realization.

Common Mistakes

Treating back-formation as mechanical subtraction

❌ نشيل الباء من برنامج ويطلع فعل رنامج.

Incorrect—back-formation does not remove arbitrary letters; the established verb is برمج.

✅ برنامج مرتبط بالفعل برمج وبالاسم برمجة.

barnāmag mortabiṭ bil-fiʿl barmag wi-bil-ism barmaga.

برنامج is connected with the verb برمج and the noun برمجة.

Inventing a verb from every loan noun

❌ هو كمتر الملف قبل ما يبعته.

Incorrect invented verb—كمبيوتر does not license كمتر.

✅ هو فتح الملف على الكمبيوتر قبل ما يبعته.

huwwa fataḥ il-malaf ʿala l-kombyūtar ʾabl ma yibʿatu.

He opened the file on the computer before sending it.

Using masculine agreement with برمجيات

❌ البرمجيات الجديد غالي.

Incorrect—nonhuman plural برمجيات takes feminine singular adjective agreement.

✅ البرمجيات الجديدة غالية.

il-barmagiyyāt il-gidīda ghālya.

The new software is expensive.

Reading Cairene ج as formal /dʒ/ by default

المبرمج شاطر وبيشرح بهدوء.

il-mobarmig shāṭir wi-biyishraḥ bi-hodūʾ.

il-mobarmij shāṭir wi-biyishraḥ bi-hodūʾ

Pronunciation/register mismatch—mainstream Cairene technical conversation normally has g; /dʒ/ may be a formal performance choice.

Key Takeaways

Back-formation and reanalysis can turn an established noun into a new Arabic-shaped family, as in برنامج / برمج / برمجة / مبرمج. Comparable families around أرشيف and فورمات have their own registers. The process is lexically gated: integration of a noun does not guarantee that any imagined verb exists.
