وصل is the ordinary mainstream Cairene verb “arrive, reach”: وصل wiṣil, يوصل yiwṣal. Its initial و remains in writing, but the surrounding vowels change across the perfect and imperfect. Learn the pair rather than deriving the imperfect from an MSA citation form; the wider class is mapped on the assimilated-verb overview.
The base verb is normally intransitive: the traveler or thing arriving is its subject. Doubled وصّل waṣṣal is a separate causative verb, “deliver, drive someone, get something to a destination.” A third use presents news or a message as the thing that reaches a recipient. These participant frames explain more than the English gloss alone.
Complete practical paradigm
| Person | Perfect | Bare imperfect | b-imperfect | ḥa-future |
|---|---|---|---|---|
The perfect locates a completed arrival. The b-imperfect presents a habit, schedule, or arrival in progress. Bare forms follow modals and future-time linkers; حـ joins the bare form for an independent future. Informal writing also uses هـ, so هيوصل is a spelling variant of حيوصل, not another tense.
العربية وصلت الجراج قبل المطر.
il-ʿarabiyya wiṣlit il-garāg ʾabl il-maṭar.
The car reached the garage before the rain.
أنا باوصل الشغل بدري يوم الحد.
ʾana bawṣal ish-shoghl badri yōm il-ḥadd.
I get to work early on Sundays.
Destination: direct noun or لـ
With familiar destinations, colloquial Egyptian often places the destination directly after وصل: وصل البيت، وصل الشغل. لـ is also common when the endpoint is being measured, contrasted, or newly specified. English arrive at/in does not require Egyptian في.
لازم نوصل المينا قبل الضلمة.
lāzim niwṣal il-mīna ʾabl iḍ-ḍolma.
We have to reach the port before dark.
المشوار بيوصل لحد أول الكوبري.
il-mishwār biyiwṣal laḥadd ʾawwil il-kōbri.
The route goes as far as the start of the bridge.
Commands, negation, and the participle
Positive commands are اوصل iwṣal, اوصلي iwṣali, and اوصلوا iwṣalu. Negative commands use ماتـ...ش around the second-person imperfect: ماتِوْصَلْش ma-tiwṣalsh. A command meaning “arrive early” is grammatical, though speakers often choose a more specific action such as leaving early.
اوصل بدري عشان نراجع العرض سوا.
iwṣal badri ʿashān nirāgiʿ il-ʿarḍ sawa.
Get there early so we can review the presentation together. (to one man)
الشحنة ماوصلتش المخزن لحد دلوقتي.
ish-shiḥna ma-wiṣlitsh il-makhzan laḥadd dilwaʾti.
The shipment hasn't reached the storeroom yet.
The active participle واصل، واصلة، واصلين occurs, but it is not a mechanical present tense. In travel updates أنا واصل كمان خمس دقايق presents arrival as imminent; with extents it can mean “reaching/continuing as far as.” For a plain completed fact, وصلت is safer and more frequent. A theoretical passive participle of the base is not part of the everyday arrival paradigm.
أنا واصل كمان خمس دقايق؛ اطلب القهوة.
ʾana wāṣil kamān khams daʾāyiʾ; oṭlob il-ʾahwa.
I'll be there in another five minutes; order the coffee. (informal, male speaker)
Causative delivery and communication
Doubled وصّل / بيوصّل waṣṣal / biywaṣṣal adds a causer and licenses a direct object. It covers driving a person somewhere, delivering an item, or making something reach an endpoint. An object suffix therefore naturally attaches to the causative. The shadda is invisible in ordinary unvocalized text but audible in speech.
السواق وصلنا لحد باب العمارة.
is-sawwāʾ waṣṣalna laḥadd bāb il-ʿimāra.
The driver dropped us right at the building entrance.
المندوب ماوصلليش الطلب في المعاد.
il-mandūb ma-waṣṣallīsh iṭ-ṭalab fi l-mīʿād.
The courier didn't deliver the order to me on time.
With information, the message can be the grammatical subject and the recipient appears with لـ: وصلتلي “reached me.” English makes the person the subject in I got the message; Egyptian often organizes the same event around the message.
الرسالة وصلتلي وأنا في المترو.
ir-risāla wiṣlitli wi-ʾana fi l-mitro.
The message reached me while I was on the metro; naturally, ‘I got the message on the metro.’
The endpoint can also be abstract in established collocations such as وصل لحل “reach a solution” and وصل لاتفاق “reach an agreement.” This extension keeps the same intransitive endpoint structure; it is not causative delivery.
بعد نقاش طويل وصلنا لحل يرضي الطرفين.
baʿd niʾāsh ṭawīl wiṣilna li-ḥall yirḍi ṭ-ṭarafēn.
After a long discussion, we reached a solution that satisfies both sides.
A short dialogue
إنتوا قربتوا توصلوا ولا لسه بعيد؟
ʾintu ʾarrabtu tiwṣalu walla lissa baʿīd?
Are you close to arriving, or are you still far away?
فاضل عشر دقايق، وحكلمك أول ما نوصل.
fāḍil ʿashar daʾāyiʾ, wi-ḥakallimak ʾawwil ma niwṣal.
Ten minutes left; I'll call you as soon as we arrive.
Register and variation
وصل / يوصل and وصّل / بيوصّل are neutral everyday Cairo (informal/neutral). MSA وَصَلَ / يَصِلُ has a different imperfect stem and formal endings (formal/MSA); inserting it into an otherwise Cairene sentence is code-switching, not the baseline paradigm. Vowels and destination preferences vary across Alexandria, the Delta, Upper Egypt, Bedouin communities, age groups, and individual speakers (regional/social). Media and stage dialogue may heighten or mix forms (performance language). These variants do not change the crucial base-versus-causative participant contrast.
Common Mistakes
1. Importing the MSA imperfect.
❌ هو بيصل المكتب الساعة تسعة.
Incorrect for mainstream Cairo—the imperfect is بيوصل, not an MSA-derived form.
✅ هو بيوصل المكتب حوالي تسعة كل يوم.
huwwa biyiwṣal il-maktab ḥawāli tisʿa kull yōm.
He gets to the office around nine every day.
2. Copying English arrive in.
❌ وصلنا في البيت بعد العشا.
Incorrect destination frame for ordinary ‘got home’; do not insert في from English.
✅ وصلنا البيت بعد العشا على طول.
wiṣilna l-bēt baʿd il-ʿasha ʿala ṭūl.
We got home right after dinner.
3. Using the intransitive base for delivery.
وصلني السواق المحطة.
waṣṣalni s-sawwāʾ il-maḥaṭṭa.
wiṣilni s-sawwāʾ il-maḥaṭṭa
Pronunciation error—the intended ‘the driver took me to the station’ requires doubled وصّل.
4. Putting the recipient in the wrong role.
❌ أنا وصلت الرسالة الصبح.
Wrong participant structure for ‘I received the message’; make الرسالة the subject or use a reception verb.
✅ الرسالة وصلتلي الصبح قبل الاجتماع.
ir-risāla wiṣlitli ṣ-ṣobḥ ʾabl il-igtimāʿ.
I received the message in the morning before the meeting.
Key Takeaways
- Store وصل / يوصل together; the initial weak verb keeps written و but has its own Cairene vowels.
- The traveler is subject of base وصل; وصّل adds a causer and can take a direct-object clitic.
- Use a direct destination or لـ according to endpoint framing, not English at/in automatically.
- Message-reception frames often make the message subject and mark the recipient with لـ.
