جه gih — come

جه gih is the everyday Cairene verb “come.” It is highly irregular: its practical family includes perfect جه / جيت, imperfect ييجي, participle جاي, and the suppletive command تعالى. These forms belong together because speakers use them as one lexeme, not because one transparent rule derives them all.

The motion is normally toward the speaker, listener, meeting point, or current center of attention. English speakers must also avoid importing English come to someone as a direct-object pattern: the person is introduced with لـ, as in جيتلك “I came to you.” For the larger motion system, see going and coming.

Core Practical Paradigm

The table gives the mainstream Cairo production forms (informal/neutral). Learn each column as a stored stem family.

Bare imperfect appears after modals, purpose expressions, and similar triggers. The b-imperfect presents an actual recurring event; حـ presents a future assertion.

ممكن تيجي الفرع الجديد بكرة قبل الضهر؟

momken tīgi l-farʿ il-gidīd bukra ʾabl iḍ-ḍohr

Can you come to the new branch tomorrow before noon?

المندوب بييجي هنا كل اتنين يستلم الطلبات.

il-mandūb biyīgi hina kull itnēn yistilim iṭ-ṭalabāt

The courier comes here every Monday to collect the orders.

إحنا حنيجي بدري عشان نجهز القاعة.

ʾiḥna ḥanīgi badri ʿashān nigahhiz il-ʾāʿa

We'll come early so we can prepare the room.

💡
Do not build this verb from جه by analogy. Memorize the four anchors جه، جيت، ييجي، جاي and the separate command تعالى.

Perfect Forms Report Arrival

Perfect جه presents arrival as complete. Notice that first and second person use جيـ, feminine third person uses جات, and third plural uses جم. Those alternations are lexical facts, not a general template for every weak verb.

سلمى جات المكتب بعد ما الاجتماع خلص.

Salma gāt il-maktab baʿd ma l-igtimāʿ khalaṣ

Salma came to the office after the meeting had ended.

الضيوف جم بدري، فلقوا الباب لسه مقفول.

iḍ-ḍuyūf gum badri, fa-laʾu l-bāb lissa maʾfūl

The guests arrived early, so they found the door still locked.

The Command Is تعالى, Not a Form of ييجي

The positive command is supplied by a different historical verb: masculine تعالى taʿāla, feminine تعالي taʿāli, and plural تعالوا taʿālu. Negative commands return to the second-person imperfect inside ما...ش: ماتجيش، ماتجيش، ماتجوش.

تعالى اقعد معانا لحد ما العربية توصل.

taʿāla oʾʿod maʿāna laḥadd ma l-ʿarabiyya tiwṣal

Come sit with us until the car arrives. (to a man)

ماتجوش من الطريق القديم؛ فيه تحويلة كبيرة.

ma-tigūsh min iṭ-ṭarīʾ il-ʾadīm; fīh taḥwīla kibīra

Don't come by the old road; there's a major diversion. (to a group)

جاي Describes an Oriented Trip or Plan

The active participle agrees: جاي masculine, جاية feminine, جايين plural. It commonly presents someone as on the way or committed to coming. Negate it with independent مش, not verbal ما...ش.

ندى جاية في المترو ومفروض توصل كمان ربع ساعة.

Nada gayya fi l-metro wi-mafrūḍ tiwṣal kamān robʿ sāʿa

Nada is coming on the metro and should arrive in another fifteen minutes.

أنا مش جاي الحفلة لو المكان بعيد بالشكل ده.

ʾana mish gāy il-ḥafla law il-makān baʿīd bish-shakl da

I'm not coming to the party if the place is that far away.

The b-imperfect more readily describes a repeated route or occurrence, while جاي profiles current orientation or a settled plan. This is a discourse contrast, not simply “present” versus “continuous.”

Destinations, Sources, and Attached لـ

Familiar destinations can follow directly: جه البيت، جه المكتب. A source uses من. A person or personal endpoint commonly uses لـ, and its pronoun attaches: جيتلك “I came to you.” This is a prepositional suffix, not a direct object.

جيتلك مخصوص عشان أشرحلك اللي حصل.

gētlak makhṣūṣ ʿashān ʾashraḥlak illi ḥaṣal

I came especially to see you so I could explain what happened. (to a man)

هو جاي من طنطا وحيغير القطر في بنها.

huwwa gāy min Ṭanṭa wi-ḥayighayyar il-ʾaṭr fi Banha

He's coming from Tanta and will change trains in Banha.

Some extensions are lexicalized. جه في بالي means “occurred to me,” while جيت في وقتك can mean “you came at just the right time.” Learn them as collocations rather than predicting them from physical motion.

Negation and a Short Dialogue

Finite forms take ما...ش: ماجاش، مابيجيش. Future normally uses مش + حـ: مش حييجي. Participial جاي takes مش.

سامح ماجاش امبارح ومش حييجي النهارده كمان.

Sāmiḥ ma-gāsh imbāriḥ wi-mish ḥayīgi n-naharda kamān

Sameh didn't come yesterday, and he won't come today either.

ـ إنتوا جايين بالعربية؟ ـ لأ، حنيجي بالمترو ونكلمك لما نوصل.

— ʾintu gayyīn bil-ʿarabiyya? — laʾ, ḥanīgi bil-metro wi-nikallimak lamma niwṣal

‘Are you coming by car?’ ‘No, we'll come by metro and call you when we arrive.’

Register and Variation

These are mainstream urban Cairene forms (informal/neutral), with ج pronounced /g/. Formal MSA uses جاء / يجيء (formal) and normally pronounces ج /dʒ/; substituting that full paradigm in ordinary Cairo is a register shift. إجا occurs in some rural, Delta, and other regional speech (regional: parts of Egypt), and performance language may select forms for character or rhyme. Such variants are real, but they are not mixed into the production table.

Common Mistakes

1. Regularizing the imperfect from the perfect

❌ هو بيجه هنا كل أسبوع.

Incorrect in mainstream Cairo: the habitual imperfect is بييجي.

✅ هو بييجي يستلم الدوا كل خميس.

huwwa biyīgi yistilim id-dawa kull khamīs

He comes to pick up the medicine every Thursday.

2. Building a command from تيجي

❌ ييجي هنا يا كريم.

Incorrect as a direct command to Karim; use تعالى.

✅ تعالى هنا يا كريم عشان أوريك الخريطة.

taʿāla hina ya Karīm ʿashān ʾawarrīk il-kharīṭa

Come here, Karim, so I can show you the map.

3. Treating a person as a direct object

❌ جيتك عشان نتكلم.

Incorrect for ‘I came to you’ if ك is treated as a direct object; the goal relation needs لـ.

✅ جيتلك بعد الشغل عشان نتكلم بهدوء.

gētlak baʿd ish-shoghl ʿashān nitkallim bihodūʾ

I came to you after work so we could talk calmly.

4. Negating the participle as a finite verb

❌ أنا ماجايش الاجتماع.

Incorrect in the neutral baseline: جاي is a participle and normally takes مش.

✅ أنا مش جاي الاجتماع عشان عندي كشف.

ʾana mish gāy il-igtimāʿ ʿashān ʿandi kashf

I'm not coming to the meeting because I have a medical appointment.

5. Substituting the MSA citation form in a Cairene sentence

❌ هو جاء بدري وقعد مستنينا.

Register mismatch: جاء is formal MSA inside an otherwise ordinary Cairene sentence.

✅ هو جه بدري وقعد مستنينا عند الباب.

huwwa gih badri wi-ʾaʿad mistannīna ʿand il-bāb

He came early and waited for us by the door.

Key Takeaways

  • Memorize جه / جيت / ييجي / جاي / تعالى as one irregular lexical family.
  • Use bare imperfect after triggers, b-imperfect for actual or habitual coming, and حـ for future assertion.
  • Use جاي، جاية، جايين for current orientation or a settled plan, and negate them with مش.
  • Personal endpoints take لـ: جيتلك is literally “I came to you,” not a direct-object form.
