Plain Egyptian is not childish Egyptian. It is prose whose agents, actions, sequence, and practical consequence are easy to recover on the first reading. Good editing often shortens an overloaded sentence, replaces abstract support nouns with established verbs, restores small particles that guide the listener, and moves heavy new information to a position where it can be processed.
This page targets careful mainstream Cairo writing for messages, instructions, explanations, dialogue, and public-facing copy. Formal documents can require different conventions, but obscurity is not a marker of education.
Use this page together with Avoiding English Translationese, which identifies the source-language patterns that often produce dense drafts.
Diagnostic 1: give one clause one main job
If a sentence reports a problem, its cause, a decision, and a deadline in one chain, readers must hold too much before reaching the point. Egyptian readily uses short coordinated clauses and particles such as فـ، بس، وبعدين، عشان.
النظام وقف، فكلمنا الدعم، وقالوا المشكلة حتتحل بالليل.
in-niẓām wiʾif, fa-kallimna d-daʿm, wi-ʾālu l-moshkila ḥatitḥall bil-lēl.
The system stopped, so we called support, and they said the problem would be fixed tonight. (clear professional Egyptian)
الطلب ناقص صورة البطاقة، فابعتها ونكمل الإجراءات.
iṭ-ṭalab nāʾiṣ ṣūrit il-biṭāʾa, fa-bʿatha wi-nikammil il-ʾigrāʾāt.
The application is missing a copy of the ID, so send it and we'll complete the process. (careful instruction to a man)
Each sentence makes the consequence explicit without a long nominal frame.
Diagnostic 2: restore Egyptian collocations
Plain style uses combinations speakers already retrieve as units. English-based synonyms can be comprehensible yet wrong for the noun or situation.
| Communicative job | Natural Egyptian collocation | Literal structure |
|---|---|---|
| make a decision | ياخد قرار | take a decision |
| ask a question | يسأل سؤال | ask a question |
| pay attention | ياخد باله | take his attention |
| solve a problem | يحل مشكلة | solve a problem |
| submit an application | يقدم طلب | present an application |
خدنا قرار نغير المعاد قبل ما نكلم الناس.
khadna ʾarār nghayyar il-miʿād ʾabl ma nkallim in-nās.
We decided to change the time before contacting people. (careful Egyptian)
خلي بالك من الرقم الأخير عشان بيتغير كل شهر.
khalli bālak min ir-raʾam il-akhīr ʿashān biyitghayyar koll shahr.
Pay attention to the last number because it changes every month. (informal instruction to a man)
Diagnostic 3: use particles as navigation
Particles such as يعني، خلاص، لسه، بقى، بس organize stance and timing. Removing all of them in pursuit of “clean” prose can make dialogue sound translated or emotionally blank. Adding several to every line has the opposite problem.
خلاص، اتفقنا على السعر؛ لسه بس نحدد يوم التسليم.
khalāṣ, ittafaʾna ʿala s-siʿr; lissa bass nḥaddid yōm it-taslīm.
Okay, we've agreed on the price; we only still need to set the delivery day. (professional Egyptian)
يعني المطلوب إننا نراجع النسخة ونبعتها تاني.
yaʿni l-maṭlūb innina nirāgiʿ in-noskha wi-nibʿatha tāni.
So what we need to do is review the copy and send it again. (reformulation; careful Egyptian)
The first خلاص closes one stage; لسه بس identifies what remains. The second يعني reformulates, rather than serving as verbal filler.
Diagnostic 4: place context before the requested action
For instructions, give the reader enough context to interpret the action, then put the action where it is easy to find. If the request is urgent, lead with it and follow with the reason.
لو الملف عندك، ابعتهولي قبل الاجتماع عشان ألحق أراجعه.
law il-malaf ʿandak, ibʿat-hūli ʾabl il-igtimāʿ ʿashān ʾalḥaʾ ʾarāgiʿu.
If you have the file, send it to me before the meeting so I have time to review it. (request to a man)
ابعتلي العنوان دلوقتي؛ السواق قرب يوصل.
ibʿatli l-ʿonwān dilwaʾti; is-sawwāʾ ʾarrab yōṣal.
Send me the address now; the driver is almost there. (urgent informal request to a man)
Information flow serves the task, not a universal word-order formula.
The same message in three settings
The message is “Send the revised file today so we can print it tomorrow.”
ابعت النسخة المعدلة النهارده عشان نطبعها بكرة.
ibʿat in-noskha l-muʿaddala n-nahārda ʿashān niṭbaʿha bokra.
Send the revised copy today so we can print it tomorrow. (informal; to a man)
ياريت تبعت النسخة بعد التعديل النهارده عشان نلحق نطبعها بكرة.
yārēt tibʿat in-noskha baʿd it-taʿdīl in-nahārda ʿashān nilḥaʾ niṭbaʿha bokra.
Please send the revised copy today so we have time to print it tomorrow. (careful professional Egyptian)
يرجى إرسال النسخة المعدلة اليوم لطباعتها غدا.
yurjā ʾirsālu n-noskhati l-muʿaddalati l-yawma li-ṭibāʿatihā ghadan.
Please send the revised copy today for printing tomorrow. (formal written Arabic)
The careful Egyptian version adds consideration through ياريت and نلحق. It is clear without becoming formal MSA.
An annotated switch
العنوان الرسمي هو إخطار بتعديل الموعد، بس في الرسالة حنقول إن المعاد اتغير.
il-ʿonwān ir-rasmi huwwa ʾikhṭār bitaʿdīl il-mawʿid, bass fi r-risāla ḥaniʾūl inn il-miʿād itghayyar.
The official title is ‘Notice of a Change of Appointment,’ but in the message we'll say that the time changed. (formal title inside Egyptian editorial discussion)
The dense noun phrase is justified as a title. The explanation switches back to a short Egyptian event clause.
Common Mistakes
1. Keeping every idea inside one sentence
❌ بسبب المشكلة اللي حصلت والاتصال بالدعم اللي قال إن الإصلاح بالليل حنستنى.
Overloaded packaging — cause, contact, report, and decision compete inside one clause.
✅ حصلت مشكلة، فكلمنا الدعم، وحنستنى لحد ما يصلحوها بالليل.
ḥaṣalit moshkila, fa-kallimna d-daʿm, wi-ḥanistanna laḥadd ma yiṣallaḥūha bil-lēl.
A problem occurred, so we called support, and we'll wait until they fix it tonight. (clear Egyptian)
2. Removing every discourse particle
❌ اتفقنا على السعر. نحدد التسليم.
Too abrupt for the intended collaborative update — the relationship between stages is missing.
✅ خلاص اتفقنا على السعر، ولسه حنحدد التسليم.
khalāṣ ittafaʾna ʿala s-siʿr, wi-lissa ḥaniḥaddid it-taslīm.
We've settled the price, and we still need to set the delivery. (professional Egyptian)
3. Replacing a natural collocation word by word
❌ اعمل انتباه للرقم الأخير.
English-shaped collocation — Egyptian uses خد بالك for this instruction.
✅ خد بالك من الرقم الأخير.
khod bālak min ir-raʾam il-akhīr.
Pay attention to the last number. (informal; to a man)
4. Treating plain Egyptian as unsuitable for serious work
❌ الكلام الواضح مينفعش في رسالة شغل.
False claim — audience-appropriate Egyptian can be precise and professional.
✅ كتبنا المطلوب بوضوح، وسبنا المصطلح الرسمي زي ما هو.
katabna l-maṭlūb biwuḍūḥ, wi-sibna l-muṣṭalaḥ ir-rasmi zayy ma huwwa.
We wrote the requirement clearly and left the official term unchanged. (professional Egyptian)
Key Takeaways
- Split overloaded prose where cause, action, report, and result perform different jobs.
- Prefer established Egyptian verb–noun collocations over word-for-word English combinations.
- Use particles selectively to mark closure, continuation, contrast, and reformulation.
