كام: How Many and How Much

كام kām asks for a numerical value: “how many?” and, in established expressions, “how much?” It combines directly with a singular counted noun—كام تذكرة، كام يوم، كام جنيه—and the entire quantity phrase normally stays where the answer would occur.

English speakers face two traps. English puts how many first and uses a plural noun; Cairene usually leaves كام + singular noun in situ. English how much also covers mass quantity broadly, while Egyptian often prefers قد إيه for an unmeasured mass or degree. The Egyptian number system explains how the noun changes again once an actual numeral is supplied.

Rule 1: Replace a Number Phrase with كام + Singular Noun

Compare the statement and question:

إنت حجزت تلات تذاكر للعرض.

inta ḥagazt talāt tazākir lil-ʿarḍ.

You booked three tickets for the show.

إنت حجزت كام تذكرة للعرض؟

inta ḥagazt kām tazkara lil-ʿarḍ?

How many tickets did you book for the show?

The answer تلات تذاكر uses the plural pattern required after three. The question uses singular تذكرة after كام. This asymmetry is genuine; there is no single English-like plural rule that covers both.

الفريق محتاج كام عربية بكرة؟

il-farīʾ meḥtāg kām ʿarabiyya bukra?

How many cars does the team need tomorrow?

قعدتوا كام يوم في أسوان؟

ʾaʿadtu kām yōm fi ʾAswān?

How many days did you stay in Aswan?

💡
Memorize كام + singular noun as one quantity phrase. The noun form in the answer depends on the actual numeral, so do not predict the answer's noun number from the question.

Rule 2: Keep the Quantity Phrase in Its Grammatical Slot

As an object, كام + noun normally follows the verb. English fronting and auxiliary insertion do not apply.

الشركة وظفت كام مهندس السنة دي؟

ish-sharika waẓẓafit kām mohandis is-sana di?

How many engineers did the company hire this year?

As the subject, the quantity phrase occupies subject position. When the number is unknown, a masculine-singular verb is a common unmarked pattern with a human count noun:

وصل كام واحد قبل المعاد؟

wiṣil kām wāḥid ʾabl il-mīʿād?

How many people arrived before the appointment?

If the question explicitly selects women, feminine agreement is natural:

وصلت كام واحدة من فريق المبيعات؟

wiṣlit kām waḥda min farīʾ il-mabīʿāt?

How many women from the sales team arrived?

This is semantic agreement with the specified set, not a rule that كام itself has gender. كام is invariant.

Rule 3: Price Uses بكام or a Price Predicate

With an item as topic, بكام؟ is the compact everyday price question.

الشنطة الجلد دي بكام؟

ish-shanṭa l-gild di bi-kām?

How much is this leather bag?

الكيلو بكام النهارده؟

il-kīlo bi-kām in-nahārda?

How much is a kilo today?

When asking about a completed transaction, كام can be a price predicate after the item:

الحساب طلع كام بعد الخصم؟

il-ḥisāb ṭiliʿ kām baʿd il-khaṣm?

How much did the bill come to after the discount?

دفعت كام في التصليح كله؟

dafaʿt kām fi t-taṣlīḥ kullu?

How much did you pay for the whole repair?

In careful contexts, the answer supplies the currency: خمسمية جنيه “five hundred pounds.” A bare number is natural when both speakers know the currency.

Rule 4: Age and Duration Use Conventional Measure Nouns

Age is expressed with possession plus كام سنة:

بنتك عندها كام سنة دلوقتي؟

bintak ʿandaha kām sana dilwaʾti?

How old is your daughter now?

The literal structure is “your daughter has how many years?” There is no adjective corresponding exactly to English old in this pattern.

Duration also uses كام + singular unit:

الاجتماع أخد كام ساعة؟

il-igtimāʿ ʾakhad kām sāʿa?

How many hours did the meeting take?

فاضل كام دقيقة على القطر؟

fāḍil kām daʾīʾa ʿala l-ʾaṭr?

How many minutes are left until the train?

English may translate the second naturally as “How long until the train?” Egyptian names the unit being counted.

Rule 5: كام Is Not the Default for Every Mass or Degree

Use كام when the answer is a number or conventional numerical value. For an uncounted amount or degree, قد إيه is often more natural.

عايز كام إزازة مية للاجتماع؟

ʿāyiz kām ʾizāza mayya lil-igtimāʿ?

How many bottles of water do you want for the meeting?

عايز مية قد إيه في الخزان؟

ʿāyiz mayya ʾadd ʾēh fi l-khazzān?

How much water do you want in the tank?

الامتحان كان صعب قد إيه؟

il-imtiḥān kān ṣaʿb ʾadd ʾēh?

How difficult was the exam?

The first قد إيه example asks for an unbounded amount; the second asks for a degree rather than a count. Price, age, clock-related duration, and measurements are conventional numerical domains where كام remains natural.

Rule 6: Questions Presuppose a Countable Set or Scale

كام تذكرة؟ presupposes that tickets are relevant; it asks only for their number. If their existence is uncertain, establish that first.

حجزتوا تذاكر ولا لأ؟ ولو حجزتوا، حجزتوا كام تذكرة؟

ḥagaztu tazākir walla laʾ? wi-law ḥagaztu, ḥagaztu kām tazkara?

Did you book tickets at all? And if so, how many?

By contrast, a proposed number creates confirmation bias:

الحساب طلع تمنمية جنيه، صح؟

il-ḥisāb ṭiliʿ tamanmiyya ginēh, ṣaḥḥ?

The bill came to eight hundred pounds, right?

لأ، طلع سبعمية وخمسين بعد الخصم.

laʾ, ṭiliʿ sabʿumiyya wi-khamsīn baʿd il-khaṣm.

No, it came to seven hundred and fifty after the discount.

Open الحساب طلع كام؟ requests a value; the tagged version asks the listener to confirm or correct an offered value.

Rule 7: Embedded كام Stays in Situ

Embedded numerical questions retain Egyptian order:

مش فاكر دفعنا كام جنيه في الفندق.

mish fākir dafaʿna kām ginēh fi l-fondoʾ.

I don't remember how many pounds we paid at the hotel.

قوللي محتاجين كام كرسي قبل ما أطلبهم.

ʾulli meḥtāgīn kām kursi ʾabl ma ʾaṭlobhom.

Tell me how many chairs they need before I order them.

There is no embedded inversion. كام كرسي fills the complement of محتاجين, and هم on أطلبهم independently refers back to the chairs in the later clause. It is not a resumptive pronoun required by كام.

Register and Variation

كام is mainstream Cairene (informal/neutral) and widespread in Egyptian varieties. Formal كم with formal syntax belongs to MSA writing and speeches (formal). Regional, class, age, and community repertoires vary in numeral pronunciation and price formulas (regional/social); the singular counted noun after كام is the production baseline here. Market speech may shorten answers or omit the currency because the setting supplies it (informal).

Common Mistakes

1. Using a plural noun after كام

❌ إنت حجزت كام تذاكر؟

Incorrect in the mainstream production pattern — the counted noun after كام is singular.

✅ إنت حجزت كام تذكرة للماتش؟

inta ḥagazt kām tazkara lil-mātsh?

How many tickets did you book for the match?

2. Fronting every كام phrase like English

❌ كام تذكرة إنت حجزت للعرض؟

Marked as contrastive rather than neutral — ordinary object كام stays after the verb.

✅ إنت حجزت كام تذكرة للعرض الجديد؟

inta ḥagazt kām tazkara lil-ʿarḍ il-gidīd?

How many tickets did you book for the new show?

3. Adding English do-support

❌ عمل إنت دفعت كام؟

Incorrect — Egyptian does not insert a word corresponding to English ‘did.’

✅ إنت دفعت كام في الكشف؟

inta dafaʿt kām fi l-kashf?

How much did you pay for the appointment?

4. Copying English “how much” for an unmeasured mass

❌ عايز كام مية في الخزان؟

Awkward for an unmeasured amount of water — كام normally asks for a count or conventional numeric scale.

✅ عايز مية قد إيه في الخزان الكبير؟

ʿāyiz mayya ʾadd ʾēh fi l-khazzān il-kibīr?

How much water do you want in the large tank?

5. Using formal كم as casual Cairo

❌ كم كتابا اشتريت امبارح؟

Register mismatch — this uses formal كم and an MSA case ending inside a conversational setting.

✅ إنت اشتريت كام كتاب امبارح؟

inta ishtarēt kām kitāb imbāriḥ?

How many books did you buy yesterday?

Key Takeaways

  • Use invariant كام + singular noun for an unknown numerical count.
  • Keep an object quantity phrase after its verb; a subject quantity phrase occupies subject position.
  • بكام؟ asks price, while كام سنة/ساعة/دقيقة asks age or duration.
  • Use قد إيه rather than كام for many unmeasured mass or degree questions.
  • Embedded كام keeps Egyptian order, and a proposed number plus a tag asks for confirmation rather than information.
