إزاي: How

إزاي izzāy is the mainstream Cairene word for “how.” It asks about manner or procedure, evaluates how a situation is going, and—when fronted with emphatic intonation—can express disbelief: “How could that happen?” Egyptian does not add English do or invert a subject and auxiliary.

The position of إزاي is construction-sensitive. Final إزاي often asks neutrally for a method or state; initial إزاي naturally frames a procedure, but it becomes especially common in incredulous questions. The words alone do not distinguish neutral curiosity from protest—intonation and context do. See the broader question word-order guide for the in-situ system.

Rule 1: Replace a Manner Phrase with إزاي

Start with a statement containing a method, then replace the method with إزاي:

إنت فتحت الملف بالباسورد القديم.

inta fataḥt il-malaf bil-bāswōrd il-ʾadīm.

You opened the file with the old password.

إنت فتحت الملف إزاي؟

inta fataḥt il-malaf izzāy?

How did you open the file?

The answer can name an instrument, a sequence of steps, or another method:

فتحته من اللينك اللي بعتتهولي.

fataḥto min il-līnk illi baʿattihūli.

I opened it from the link you sent me.

The object suffix in فتحته stays attached. The interrogative does not alter ordinary verb or clitic order.

إنتوا نظمتوا الرحلة إزاي في يومين بس؟

intu naẓẓamtu r-riḥla izzāy fi yōmēn bass?

How did you organize the trip in only two days?

💡
For a neutral manner question, put إزاي where the answer method would go. A natural answer may begin with بـ “with/by,” عن طريق “by way of,” or a whole sequence of actions.

Rule 2: Initial إزاي Can Frame a Procedure

Initial placement is ordinary when the speaker asks for instructions or sets “how” as the topic.

إزاي أغير اللغة في التطبيق؟

izzāy ʾaghayyar il-lugha fi t-taṭbīʾ?

How do I change the language in the app?

إزاي نوصل للمحطة من هنا؟

izzāy niwṣal lil-maḥaṭṭa min hina?

How do we get to the station from here?

These are not English fronting copied blindly; they are established Egyptian procedure questions. Final placement is also possible and often sounds more like asking about the method used in a particular event:

وصلتوا للمحطة إزاي بعد ما الطريق اتقفل؟

wiṣiltu lil-maḥaṭṭa izzāy baʿd ma ṭ-ṭarīʾ itʾafal?

How did you get to the station after the road was closed?

Initial إزاي tends toward a procedure to follow; final إزاي comfortably asks how an actual result was achieved. This is a discourse tendency, not an absolute tense rule.

Rule 3: State Questions Ask How Something Is Going

With a noun topic or an ongoing situation, إزاي asks about condition, progress, or quality.

الشغل في الفرع الجديد ماشي إزاي؟

ish-shoghl fi l-farʿ il-gidīd māshi izzāy?

How is work going at the new branch?

الجو كان إزاي في إسكندرية الأسبوع اللي فات؟

il-gaww kān izzāy fi Skandariyya l-ʾusbūʿ illi fāt?

What was the weather like in Alexandria last week?

Natural English may translate state إزاي as “what ... like,” not literal “how.” The Egyptian construction still asks for an evaluative description.

The greeting إزيك؟ is historically and semantically related but behaves like a conventional person-marked formula. Its spelling and pronunciation are contracted:

AddresseeGreetingRomanization
one manإزيك؟izzayyak?
one womanإزيك؟izzayyik?
several peopleإزيكم؟izzayyukum?

إزيك يا نادر؟ الشغل الجديد عامل معاك إيه؟

izzayyak ya Nādir? ish-shoghl il-gidīd ʿāmil maʿāk ʾēh?

How are you, Nader? How is the new job treating you?

Do not generate إزيك mechanically in every manner question. It is a greeting formula with an addressee suffix, while إزاي is the free interrogative.

Rule 4: Initial إزاي Often Expresses Incredulity

When the proposition clashes with the speaker's expectations, initial إزاي plus emphatic stress means “How could...?”

إزاي وافقت على العقد من غير ما تقراه؟

izzāy wāfiʾt ʿala l-ʿaʾd min ghēr ma tiʾrāh?

How could you agree to the contract without reading it?

إزاي النتيجة اتغيرت بعد ما اتنشرت؟

izzāy in-natīga itghayyarit baʿd ma itnasharit?

How could the result change after it was published?

These questions may ask for a causal explanation, but they also signal disbelief. Compare neutral final placement:

النتيجة اتغيرت إزاي بعد المراجعة؟

in-natīga itghayyarit izzāy baʿd il-morāgʿa?

How did the result change after the review?

The neutral question requests the mechanism; the initial version more readily challenges the plausibility of the event.

Rule 5: Confirmation and Method Are Different Questions

An إزاي question asks for a method. A proposed method plus a tag asks whether that method is correct.

إنت دخلت على الحساب من اللينك، صح؟

inta dakhalt ʿala l-ḥisāb min il-līnk, ṣaḥḥ?

You accessed the account through the link, right?

لأ، دخلت من التطبيق؛ اللينك ماكانش شغال.

laʾ, dakhalt min it-taṭbīʾ; il-līnk ma-kānsh shaghghāl.

No, I used the app; the link wasn't working.

The confirmation check expects “yes” or a correction. Open دخلت إزاي؟ expects a manner answer and does not propose one.

Rule 6: Embedded إزاي Stays with Its Clause

Embedded manner questions follow verbs such as “know,” “show,” “understand,” and “remember.” Egyptian keeps its clause order; it does not add inversion.

وريني البرنامج ده بيشتغل إزاي.

warrīni l-barnāmig da biyishtaghal izzāy.

Show me how this program works.

مش فاكرة هما حلوا المشكلة إزاي.

mish fākra humma ḥallu l-moshkila izzāy.

I don't remember how they solved the problem. (female speaker)

إزاي is a manner adjunct, so it does not leave a noun or prepositional position that needs a resumptive pronoun. A suffixed pronoun may occur elsewhere for independent reasons, as in وريني “show me.”

Register and Variation

إزاي and greeting إزيك are mainstream Cairo (informal/neutral). Formal كيف belongs to MSA writing, speeches, and deliberate formal code-switching (formal). Alexandria, the Delta, Upper Egypt, Bedouin communities, and different age and class networks vary in vowel quality, greeting forms, and contour (regional/social). Performers often exaggerate initial إزاي؟! for comic disbelief (performance); that is not the default melody of a neutral procedure question.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding English do-support

❌ عمل إنت فتحت الملف إزاي؟

Incorrect — Egyptian does not insert a lexical equivalent of English ‘did.’

✅ إنت فتحت الملف إزاي من غير الباسورد؟

inta fataḥt il-malaf izzāy min ghēr il-bāswōrd?

How did you open the file without the password?

2. Inverting subject and verb mechanically

❌ وصلوا هما للمحطة إزاي؟

Mismatched as a neutral subject-first question — the order unnecessarily re-presents the subject after the verb.

✅ هما وصلوا للمحطة إزاي في الزحمة؟

humma wiṣilu lil-maḥaṭṭa izzāy fi z-zaḥma?

How did they get to the station in the traffic?

3. Using formal كيف as casual Cairo

❌ كيف فتحت التطبيق دلوقتي؟

Register mismatch — كيف belongs to formal Arabic, while دلوقتي is conversational Egyptian.

✅ فتحت التطبيق إزاي دلوقتي والنت فاصل؟

fataḥt it-taṭbīʾ izzāy dilwaʾti wi-n-nitt fāṣil?

How did you open the app now when the internet is down?

4. Using هل before an إزاي question

❌ هل إنت عملت ده إزاي؟

Incorrect mixture — هل is a formal polar particle and does not introduce an everyday manner question.

✅ إنت عملت التصميم ده إزاي لوحدك؟

inta ʿamilt it-taṣmīm da izzāy liwaḥdak?

How did you make this design by yourself?

5. Treating greeting إزيك as free إزاي

❌ إزيك فتحت الباب؟

Incorrect — إزيك is the person-marked greeting ‘how are you?’, not the manner interrogative.

✅ إزاي فتحت الباب والمفتاح جوه؟

izzāy fataḥt il-bāb wi-l-miftāḥ guwwa?

How did you open the door when the key was inside?

Key Takeaways

  • Final إزاي is a strong neutral method pattern; initial إزاي is natural for procedures and especially for incredulity.
  • State إزاي often translates naturally as “what ... like” or “how ... going.”
  • إزيك؟ is a conventional suffixed greeting, not a substitute for free إزاي.
  • Intonation distinguishes neutral method questions from surprised “How could...?” challenges.
  • Embedded إزاي keeps Egyptian order and requires no resumptive suffix.
