بـ as the Imperfect Marker

The Egyptian verbal marker بـ joins an imperfect verb and presents the event as an ordinary assertion: something currently happening, regularly repeated, characteristic, or generally valid. It is not simply an Egyptian word for English am/is/are, do, or the simple present. Context, the verb's lexical meaning, time expressions, and discourse determine the best English translation.

This بـ is part of the verbal prefix stack. It comes before the person-marked imperfect and is written with it: بكتب، بتكتب، بيكتب، بنكتب. A different بـ is the preposition “with/by/in”; it attaches to a noun instead. The two share spelling but select different hosts.

Rule 1: join بـ outside the person prefix

The productive order is بـ + person marking + imperfect stem. Surface vowels make the cluster pronounceable, but the marker never becomes a separate word.

أنا بكتب ملخص الاجتماع دلوقتي.

ʾana baktib molakhkhaṣ il-igtimāʿ dilwaʾti.

I'm writing the meeting summary now.

هي بتكتب أسماء الحاضرين قبل كل محاضرة.

hiyya bitiktib ʾasmāʾ il-ḥāḍrīn ʾabl koll moḥāḍara.

She writes down the attendees' names before every lecture.

The same morphology translates as English progressive in the first example and simple present in the second. دلوقتي favors a current event; قبل كل محاضرة makes repetition explicit.

💡
Do not choose بـ by translating an English tense name. Ask whether the Egyptian clause presents the imperfect event as an ordinary current, repeated, or characteristic assertion.

Rule 2: بـ can support several aspectual readings

The b-imperfect has a unified grammatical job but several context-driven interpretations.

ReadingTypical supportExample frame
current activityدلوقتي، حاليا، visible situationبيصلح الجهاز دلوقتي
habitكل يوم، عادة، يوم الجمعةبيصلح الأجهزة كل يوم
characteristic/ability in practicegeneral subject or contextالجهاز ده بيشتغل بسرعة

الفني بيصلح الطابعة دلوقتي؛ استنى عشر دقايق.

il-fanni biyiṣlaḥ iṭ-ṭābiʿa dilwaʾti; istanna ʿashar daʾāyiʾ.

The technician is fixing the printer now; wait ten minutes.

الفني بيصلح طابعات الفرع كل يوم خميس.

il-fanni biyiṣlaḥ ṭābiʿāt il-farʿ koll yōm khamīs.

The technician repairs the branch's printers every Thursday.

This is a scope minimal pair: the verbal form is the same, while the time phrase changes the event from current to habitual. English subtitles may insert is in one and omit it in the other; Egyptian بـ has not changed identity.

البرنامج ده بيحفظ نسخة لوحده كل خمس دقايق.

il-barnāmig da byiḥfaẓ noskha liwaḥdo koll khams daʾāyiʾ.

This program saves a copy by itself every five minutes.

The b-imperfect presents a designed characteristic. It does not claim that a save is in progress at the moment of speaking.

Rule 3: licensed bare imperfects do not take بـ

After عايز، لازم، ممكن, purpose عشان, and many sequencing predicates, Egyptian uses a bare imperfect. The absence of بـ is grammatical, not optional casual deletion; positive commands instead use their own imperative forms.

أنا براجع العقد بعد الغدا كل يوم.

ʾana barāgiʿ il-ʿaʾd baʿd il-ghada koll yōm.

I review the contract after lunch every day.

أنا عايز أراجع العقد قبل الاجتماع.

ʾana ʿāyiz ʾarāgiʿ il-ʿaʾd ʾabl il-igtimāʿ.

I want to review the contract before the meeting.

لازم نراجع الأرقام مرة كمان.

lāzim nirāgiʿ il-ʾarʾām marra kamān.

We need to review the figures one more time.

The modal or purposive construction licenses the bare person-marked form. English uses an infinitive after want and a base form after must; Egyptian uses its own bare imperfect system. Review the larger contrast on imperfect usage.

Rule 4: future حـ replaces بـ rather than stacking with it

The projected future prefix attaches to the bare imperfect person form. Do not combine حـ + بـ into an invented double marker.

إحنا بنراجع الخطة يوم التلات عادة.

iḥna binirāgiʿ il-khoṭṭa yōm it-talāt ʿāda.

We usually review the plan on Tuesday.

إحنا حنراجع الخطة يوم التلات الجاي.

iḥna ḥa-nirāgiʿ il-khoṭṭa yōm it-talāt il-gāy.

We'll review the plan next Tuesday.

Both forms contain first-person plural نـ. The outer marker changes the viewpoint: بـ anchors an ordinary repeated assertion; حـ projects an event forward.

Rule 5: negation preserves the internal b-imperfect

Neutral event negation wraps the complete b-imperfect in ما...ش. Independent مش can instead place the following verbal predicate in current or corrective focus.

الموظف مابيردش على مكالمات بعد الساعة خمسة.

il-muwaẓẓaf ma-biyiroddish ʿala mokālamāt baʿd is-sāʿa khamsa.

The employee doesn't answer calls after five.

الموظف مش بيرد دلوقتي؛ هو مع عميل.

il-muwaẓẓaf mish biyirodd dilwaʾti; huwwa maʿ ʿamīl.

The employee isn't answering right now; he's with a customer.

The common habit/current contrast is a tendency supported by these contexts, not an absolute tense equation. In both structures, verbal بـ remains joined to يرد.

Rule 6: distinguish verbal بـ from prepositional بـ

Ask what follows. Verbal بـ selects a person-marked imperfect; prepositional بـ selects a noun, pronoun suffix, or nominal expression and contributes meanings such as instrument, manner, or association.

منى بتكتب الملاحظات بالقلم الأحمر.

Mona bitiktib il-molāḥaẓāt bil-ʾalam il-ʾaḥmar.

Mona writes the notes with the red pen.

The first بـ marks the imperfect verb بتكتب; the second is the preposition in بالقلم “with the pen.” Both are attached in writing, but only the verbal one participates in the b-/bare/future contrast.

A natural turn and prosody

إنت بتعمل إيه؟ ـ بجهز الأرقام للعرض، وبعدها حبعت الملف.

ʾinta bitiʿmil ʾēh? — bagahhaz il-ʾarʾām lil-ʿarḍ, wi-baʿdaha ḥa-bʿat il-malaf.

What are you doing? — I'm preparing the figures for the presentation, and then I'll send the file.

Verbal بـ is prosodically bound and normally unstressed. Contrastive emphasis falls on the verb, object, or time phrase: “preparing the figures,” not on بـ alone. Performance speech may stretch the word, but the prefix does not become an independent turn-management particle.

Register and variation

Verbal بـ is central to mainstream Cairene (informal/neutral). Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, age, class, and community varieties may differ in prefix vowels, imperfect stems, and distribution (regional/social). Formal MSA has its own imperfect system without this colloquial بـ (formal). News interviews and professional speech may combine formal vocabulary with an Egyptian b-imperfect; that is structured code-switching, not grammatical failure.

Common Mistakes

1. Writing the bound marker separately.

❌ هو ب يراجع الطلبات كل صباح.

Incorrect house spelling — verbal بـ joins the person-marked imperfect.

✅ هو بيراجع الطلبات كل صباح قبل ما يفتح المكتب.

huwwa biyirāgiʿ iṭ-ṭalabāt koll ṣabāḥ ʾabl ma yiftaḥ il-maktab.

He reviews the requests every morning before opening the office.

2. Adding بـ after a modal licenser.

❌ أنا عايز براجع العقد النهارده.

Incorrect — عايز licenses the bare imperfect أراجع.

✅ أنا عايز أراجع العقد قبل ما المحامي يمشي.

ʾana ʿāyiz ʾarāgiʿ il-ʿaʾd ʾabl ma l-moḥāmi yimshi.

I want to review the contract before the lawyer leaves.

3. Stacking future حـ on a b-imperfect.

❌ إحنا حبنراجع الخطة بكرة.

Incorrect — future حـ selects the bare person-marked imperfect, not بـ plus imperfect.

✅ إحنا حنراجع الخطة بكرة بعد الاجتماع.

iḥna ḥa-nirāgiʿ il-khoṭṭa bokra baʿd il-igtimāʿ.

We'll review the plan tomorrow after the meeting.

4. Translating every b-imperfect as progressive.

❌ الشركة بتقفل الساعة خمسة يعني بتقفل دلوقتي.

Incorrect inference — a schedule can use the b-imperfect without describing an event underway now.

✅ الشركة بتقفل الساعة خمسة كل يوم ماعدا الجمعة.

ish-shirka bitiʾfil is-sāʿa khamsa koll yōm maʿada l-gomʿa.

The company closes at five every day except Friday.

5. Using a bare MSA-looking imperfect as neutral Cairo.

يكتب الموظف التقرير كل أسبوع.

yaktubu l-muwaẓẓafu t-taqrīra kulla ʾusbūʿin.

The employee writes the report every week. (formal MSA)

✅ الموظف بيكتب التقرير الأسبوعي يوم الخميس.

il-muwaẓẓaf biyiktib it-taʾrīr il-ʾosbūʿi yōm il-khamīs.

The employee writes the weekly report on Thursday. (neutral Cairene)

The first is a different register, not meaningless Arabic. The second is the target system of this page.

Key Takeaways

  • Join verbal بـ to the person-marked imperfect.
  • Let context distinguish current, habitual, characteristic, and general readings; بـ has no single English translation.
  • Remove بـ in licensed bare environments and replace it with joined حـ for an independently projected future.
  • Preserve the b-imperfect inside ما...ش or after contrastive/current مش.
  • Distinguish verbal بـ + imperfect from prepositional بـ + noun by the host it selects.
