A2 Learner Path

The A2 goal is dependable participation in familiar daily tasks: describe routines, report a completed event, say what is not true, attach common pronouns, identify people and things, and repair a short interaction. Mainstream urban Egyptian with a Cairene baseline is the production target. MSA and regional forms enter as labeled recognition branches, not substitutes for the Egyptian system.

This path is ordered. Do not treat it as a list to click through: each module ends in production, listening, reading, and a review loop that exposes weak links.

Prerequisite gate

Begin only when you can read joined Arabic letters slowly, distinguish short from long vowels in familiar words, introduce yourself with a zero copula, and form basic questions. Review unvocalized reading, subject pronouns, and nominal sentences if these are not stable.

أنا اسمي ندى، وساكنة في الجيزة.

ʾana ismi Nadā, wi-sākna fil-Gīza.

My name is Nada, and I live in Giza. (female speaker)

You are ready when you can read this without inserting an Arabic equivalent of English am, identify ـي as “my,” and hear feminine ساكنة.

Module 1: daily time with the b-imperfect

Study the basic imperfect, present-time uses, and the b- particle in that order. Build complete person forms for five high-frequency verbs, then use them in routines, current activities, and general facts. Learn the verb's perfect and imperfect together rather than deriving one mechanically from MSA.

بتروحي الشغل إزاي؟ ـ باخد المترو وبمشي عشر دقايق.

bitrūḥi sh-shoghl ʾizzāy? — bākhod il-mitro wi-bamshi ʿashar daʾāyiʾ.

How do you get to work? — I take the metro and walk for ten minutes. (female addressee)

Milestone: record a sixty-second account of a weekday. On playback, audit every subject prefix and every gender-marked form. Recognition work should include faster connected speech, but production should remain clear Cairene rather than imitating reductions you cannot yet control.

Module 2: completed events and practical future

Move to the basic perfect, past-time interpretation, and future حـ on the ḥa- particle page. Contrast completed event, routine, and planned future in the same topic.

امبارح اشتريت الدوا، والنهارده باخده بعد الفطار، وبكرة حروح للدكتور.

imbāriḥ ishtarēt id-dawa, win-nahārda bākhdu baʿd il-fiṭār, wi-bokra ḥarūḥ lid-duktōr.

Yesterday I bought the medicine, today I take it after breakfast, and tomorrow I'll go to the doctor.

Do not map perfect, b-imperfect, and future mechanically onto three English tense names. Ask what discourse function each form performs. The example packages a completed purchase, a current routine, and a plan.

Milestone: tell what you did yesterday and what you will do tomorrow, using at least four different verbs and one time expression per segment.

Module 3: build a negation decision system

Read the negation overview, then contrast ما...ش with perfect verbs, ما...ش with imperfect verbs, مش with predicates, and مفيش. Build the decision from syntax, not from one English word not.

ماكلمتوش امبارح؛ هو مش زعلان، بس مفيش وقت للكلام دلوقتي.

makallimtūsh imbāriḥ; huwwa mish zaʿlān, bass mafīsh waʾt lil-kalām dilwaʾti.

I didn't call him yesterday; he isn't upset, but there is no time to talk now.

This sentence is an A2 diagnostic. You should explain why attached ما...ش, independent مش, and existential مفيش cannot simply replace one another.

Module 4: clitics before complexity

Study the suffix inventory, then object suffixes, preposition suffixes, and possessive suffixes. Practice one host at a time: noun, preposition, then verb. Read and write the clitic joined.

الصور عندي؛ حبعتهالك بعد ما أوصل البيت.

iṣ-ṣowar ʿandi; ḥa-bʿat-hā-lik baʿd ma ʾawṣal il-bēt.

I have the photos; I'll send them to you after I get home. (female addressee)

The form حبعتهالك combines future, verb, object, and recipient. At A2 you need reliable high-frequency combinations, not every possible stack. If you still separate ها or لك as independent pronouns, pause here.

Module 5: noun phrases that identify the right referent

Sequence the definite article, adjective position, gender agreement, and demonstrative order. Add common plural patterns only with vocabulary you actually use.

عايزة الكوباية الزرقا دي، مش الكوباية الكبيرة.

ʿāyza l-kubāya z-zarʾa di, mish il-kubāya l-kibīra.

I want this blue cup, not the large cup. (female speaker)

Milestone: point to five objects and distinguish them by article, adjective, demonstrative, color, or possessor without copying English demonstrative-before-noun order.

Module 6: turn grammar into daily interaction

Work through meeting a new neighbor, ordering at a café, and asking for directions. For each dialogue, do four passes: read, shadow audio, replace details, then perform without the text.

لو سمحت، الحساب كام؟ وعايز كوباية مية كمان.

law samaḥt, il-ḥisāb kām? wi-ʿāyiz kubāyit mayya kamān.

Please, how much is the bill? And I'd like another glass of water.

معلش، المحطة بعد البنك ولا قبله؟

maʿlēsh, il-maḥaṭṭa baʿd il-bank walla ʾablu?

Sorry, is the station after the bank or before it?

These are task completions, not recitation tests. Success includes clarification, an appropriate response formula, and recovery after a missed word.

The weekly review loop

Use a four-day loop: produce without notes, compare with the page, listen and mark missed clitics or negation, then reuse the construction in a new situation. Keep an error log organized by decision—verb time, negator, clitic host, agreement—not by isolated sentence.

Production and recognition are deliberately unequal. Produce mainstream Cairene consistently. Recognize common spelling variation, careful MSA-oriented speech, and labeled regional features without copying them indiscriminately.

💡
Advance when the old form survives a new task. Recognition on a page is not control until you can select it during an unscripted exchange.

Optional diglossia branch

After the core modules, read Egyptian and MSA and the diglossia map. Learn to label a formal form, not to replace every Egyptian form with it. News headlines and official notices are recognition goals; daily Cairo interaction remains the production baseline.

A2 capstone

Plan and perform a two-minute “busy day” exchange. Introduce where you are going, describe a routine, report one completed problem, negate one claim, arrange a future action, use two clitics, and close politely. Then write the exchange in ordinary unvocalized Egyptian and annotate the spoken vowels separately.

الصبح بروح الجامعة، بس امبارح مارحتش عشان كنت تعبان.

iṣ-ṣobḥ barūḥ il-gāmʿa, bass imbāriḥ maroḥtish ʿashān kont taʿbān.

I go to university in the morning, but yesterday I didn't go because I was tired.

حكلمك بالليل وأقولك المعاد الجديد.

ḥakallimak bil-lēl wi-ʾaʾūlak il-mīʿād ig-gidīd.

I'll call you tonight and tell you the new time. (male addressee)

Exit when you can produce the capstone twice with different details, understand a partner's follow-up questions, and explain your negation and clitic choices.

Common Mistakes

1. Skipping script and relying on romanization

❌ هتعلم الكلام باللاتيني وبعدين أبقى أشوف العربي.

Path error — delaying Arabic script prevents reliable recognition of clitics, roots, and ordinary messages.

✅ حقرا العربي كل يوم، وأستخدم الرومنة عشان أراجع النطق.

ḥaʾra l-ʿarabi koll yōm, wi-ʾastakhdim ir-rawmana ʿashān ʾarāgiʿ in-noṭʾ.

I'll read Arabic every day and use romanization to check pronunciation.

2. Substituting an MSA paradigm for Egyptian use

❌ أنا أذهب إلى العمل كل يوم هي الجملة المصرية المطلوبة.

Register mismatch — this is MSA-oriented wording, not the taught daily Cairene production.

✅ أنا بروح الشغل كل يوم ماعدا الجمعة.

ʾana barūḥ ish-shoghl koll yōm maʿada l-gomʿa.

I go to work every day except Friday.

3. Advancing with unstable negation

❌ مفيش تعبان وما روحت مش.

Incorrect mixing — existential, predicate, and verbal negation have been combined without syntax.

✅ مش تعبان، بس مارحتش عشان مفيش مواصلات.

mish taʿbān, bass maroḥtish ʿashān mafīsh muwāṣalāt.

I'm not tired, but I didn't go because there was no transportation.

4. Detaching clitics like English pronouns

❌ بعت ها ل ك امبارح.

Incorrect segmentation — Egyptian joins the object and recipient to the verb.

✅ الرسالة وصلتني، وبعتهالك بعدها بدقيقة.

ir-risāla wiṣlitni, wi-baʿatt-hā-lik baʿdaha bidiʾīʾa.

The message reached me, and I sent it to you a minute later. (female addressee)

  • Select ما...ش، مش، مفيش by construction.
  • Complete café, directions, and neighbor interactions with clarification and closure.
  • Write a short dialogue whose spelling and spoken form correspond exactly.
