بحب versus عاجبني

Mainstream Cairene has two everyday ways to organize “liking.” In أنا بحب المكان, the experiencer “I” is the subject and the place is the direct object. In المكان عاجبني, the place is the grammatical subject and ـني marks the person pleased by it—literally, “the place is pleasing me.”

The two frames overlap, but their viewpoints differ. بحب readily presents a stable preference or enjoyed activity. Perfect عجبني gives a reaction to an encounter, while participial عاجبني presents a current evaluation. Fluent choice depends on participant roles and viewpoint, not on swapping two dictionary synonyms.

For their complete stem behavior, see the reference pages for حب and عجب. This page concentrates on choosing between their productive frames.

بحب المكتبة دي عشان هادية وبتقفل متأخر

baḥibb il-maktaba di ʿashān hādya wi-bitiʾfil motaʾakhkhar

I like this library because it is quiet and closes late. (speaker-centered preference)

المكتبة الجديدة عاجباني، بالذات مكان القراية

il-maktaba l-gidīda ʿagbāni, biz-zāt makān il-ʾirāya

I like the new library, especially the reading area. (the library currently appeals to me)

Neither English translation shows the reversal. In the second Egyptian sentence, feminine المكتبة controls عاجباني, while the experiencer remains first-person ـني.

بحب for preferences and enjoyed actions

Learn the finite verb as حب / بيحب. The b-imperfect presents an established or current preference. A liked noun is a direct object; an enjoyed activity is a person-marked bare imperfect with no second بـ.

أخويا بيحب الأفلام القديمة، وأنا بحب الوثائقيات

ʾakhūya biyiḥibb il-ʾaflām il-ʾadīma, wi-ʾana baḥibb il-wasāʾiʾiyyāt

My brother likes old films, while I like documentaries.

بنحب نمشي من الزمالك لوسط البلد لما الجو يبقى حلو

biniḥibb nimshi min iz-Zamālik li-Wusṭ il-Balad lamma l-gaww yibʾa ḥilw

We like walking from Zamalek to downtown when the weather is nice.

Finite negation wraps the verb: مابحبش، مابتحبش، مابيحبوش. This usually means absence of liking; context decides whether it implies active dislike.

مابحبش حد يكلمني وأنا بسوق

ma-baḥibbish ḥadd yikallimni wi-ʾana basūʾ

I don't like anyone talking to me while I'm driving.

💡
With بحب + action, the first verb carries the preference and بـ. The activity itself is bare: بحب أطبخ، بتحبي تطبخي، بنحب نطبخ.

عجبني for a bounded reaction

Perfect عجبني commonly evaluates something after the experiencer saw, tried, heard, or used it. Agreement follows the thing that produced the reaction: masculine عجبني, feminine عجبتني, human plural عجبوني, and a nonhuman plural set commonly feminine singular عجبتني.

المسلسل عجبني بعد أول حلقتين

il-mosalsal ʿagabni baʿd ʾawwil ḥalʾatēn

I liked the series after the first two episodes. (reaction after watching)

الوجبة عجبتهم فطلبوا نفس الطبق تاني

il-wagba ʿagabithom fa-ṭalabu nafs iṭ-ṭabaʾ tāni

They liked the meal, so they ordered the same dish again.

الممثلين الجدد عجبونا أكتر من أبطال الموسم اللي فات

il-momassilīn il-godod ʿagabūna ʾaktar min ʾabṭāl il-mōsim illi fāt

We liked the new actors more than last season's leads. (human plural subject)

The experiencer suffix is not introduced by a preposition: عجبني، عجبك، عجبها، عجبنا، عجبهم. Negation keeps that suffix inside ما...ش: ماعجبنيش.

عاجبني for a current evaluation

The agreeing active participle عاجب profiles an evaluation that holds now. Use masculine عاجبني, feminine عاجباني, and plural عاجبيني with human plural subjects. Nonhuman plurals are commonly treated as feminine singular sets.

التقسيمة الجديدة عاجباني عشان الأوض أوسع

it-taʾsīma l-gidīda ʿagbāni ʿashān il-ʾowaḍ ʾawsaʿ

I like the new layout because the rooms are larger.

الصور النهائية عاجبانا، بس محتاجين نغير العنوان

iṣ-ṣowar in-nihāʾiyya ʿagbāna, bass miḥtagīn nighayyar il-ʿonwān

We like the final pictures, but we need to change the title. (nonhuman plural as a feminine-singular set)

الموسيقى مش عاجباني في المشهد الأخير

il-mūsīʾa mish ʿagbāni fil-mashhad il-ʾakhīr

I don't like the music in the final scene. (current evaluation)

Independent مش negates the participial judgment. Compare الموسيقى ماعجبتنيش امبارح “I did not like the music yesterday” with الموسيقى مش عاجباني “the music does not appeal to me now.” The difference is viewpoint, not an arbitrary choice of negative.

Preference versus evaluation is a tendency, not a wall

Both بحب القميص ده and القميص ده عاجبني can be natural. The first starts from the speaker's liking; the second foregrounds the shirt as the source of a current judgment. The contrast is clearest with habitual activities, where بحب + bare verb is productive, and with visible options under evaluation, where عاجبني is especially natural.

بحب أشتغل في هدوء، بس المكتب المفتوح ده مش عاجبني

baḥibb ʾashtaghal fi hodūʾ, bass il-maktab il-maftūḥ da mish ʿāgibni

I like working quietly, but I don't like this open-plan office.

This sentence uses the subject-centered frame for a recurring activity and the reversed frame for a specific object being judged.

Social meaning with people

With a person, بحبك can express family affection, friendship, or romantic love; relationship and context supply the strength (intimate). إنت عاجبني says that the person appeals to the speaker and can signal attraction or personal approval. It is not a neutral substitute for “I like your work,” so use شغلك عاجبني when the work is what you mean.

شغلك عاجبني، بالذات طريقة عرض الأرقام

shoghlak ʿāgibni, biz-zāt ṭarīʾit ʿarḍ il-ʾarʾām

I like your work, especially the way you present the figures. (to a man; professional praise)

Also note that English polite please is not translated by عجب. In requests, use expressions such as لو سمحت or ممكن. عجب means “please” only in the lexical sense “appeal to someone.”

Three everyday situations

After a film, عجبني reports the reaction. While choosing furniture, عاجبني evaluates an option in front of the speakers. When discussing a routine, بحب presents an established preference.

الفيلم عجبني، بس النهاية كانت سريعة أوي

il-fīlm ʿagabni, bass in-nihāya kānit sarīʿa ʾawi

I liked the film, but the ending was much too quick.

الكنبة الرمادي عاجباني أكتر من الزرقا

il-kanaba r-ramādi ʿagbāni ʾaktar min iz-zarʾa

I like the gray sofa more than the blue one.

بحب أفطر بدري قبل ما البيت يصحى

baḥibb ʾafṭar badri ʾabl ma l-bēt yiṣḥa

I like having breakfast early before the household wakes up.

A dialogue that makes a choice

أ: أنهي تصميم عاجبك أكتر للمطبخ؟

A: ʾanhi taṣmīm ʿāgibak ʾaktar lil-maṭbakh?

A: Which design do you like better for the kitchen? (to a man)

ب: بحب الخشب الغامق عادة، بس التصميم الفاتح عجبني هنا

B: baḥibb il-khashab il-ghāmiʾ ʿāda, bass it-taṣmīm il-fātiḥ ʿagabni hina

B: I usually like dark wood, but I liked the light design here.

The question requests a current evaluation. The reply contrasts a general preference with a reaction to this specific design.

Register and variation

بحب، عجبني، عاجبني are mainstream urban Cairo (informal/neutral). Formal أحبّ and أعجبني appear in edited prose, speeches, and MSA-oriented code-switching (formal/MSA). Regional, class-, age-, and community-linked speech may differ in vowels and preferred evaluation verbs (regional/social). Screen dialogue may exaggerate مش عاجبني into confrontation (performance language), but ordinary tone can make it a mild design preference.

Common Mistakes

Copying the English subject structure into عجب

❌ أنا عجبت الجاكيت

Incorrect for ‘I liked the jacket’; this structure makes ‘I’ the person who pleased the jacket.

✅ الجاكيت عجبني لما جربته

il-gakēt ʿagabni lamma garrabtu

I liked the jacket when I tried it on.

Agreeing with the experiencer instead of the liked item

❌ الشنطة عاجبني

Incorrect in the target frame; feminine الشنطة controls feminine عاجباني.

✅ الشنطة عاجباني، بس سعرها عالي

ish-shanṭa ʿagbāni, bass siʿrha ʿāli

I like the bag, but its price is high.

Using verbal negation on the participle

❌ الدهان ماعاجبنيش دلوقتي

Incorrect in the mainstream baseline for the current participial judgment; use independent مش.

✅ الدهان مش عاجبني مع لون الأرضية

id-dihān mish ʿāgibni maʿa lōn il-ʾarḍiyya

I don't like the paint with the color of the floor.

Using عاجبني as a frame for a habitual activity

❌ عاجبني أتمشى بعد العشا كل يوم

Mismatched for an established enjoyed routine; بحب naturally takes the activity as a bare complement.

✅ بحب أتمشى بعد العشا لما الشوارع تهدى

baḥibb ʾatmashsha baʿd il-ʿasha lamma sh-shawāriʿ tihda

I like taking a walk after dinner when the streets quiet down.

Praising work with a socially loaded person judgment

❌ إنت عاجبني في إعداد التقرير

Pragmatically risky for intended professional praise; it can sound like personal attraction or evaluation of the person.

✅ طريقة شغلك في التقرير عاجباني

ṭarīʾit shoghlak fit-taʾrīr ʿagbāni

I like the way you worked on the report. (to a man)

Key Takeaways

  • In بحب X, the experiencer is the subject; in X عجبني / عاجبني, the liked thing is the subject and the experiencer is a suffix.
  • Use بحب readily for stable preferences and activities, عجبني for a bounded reaction, and عاجبني for a current evaluation.
  • Agreement follows the liked subject, while negation follows the finite-versus-participial distinction.
  • With people, the choice can carry intimacy, attraction, or evaluation; name the work or behavior when that is what you intend to praise.
