English requires a form of be in I am tired, Mona is a doctor, and the keys are on the table. Mainstream Cairene Egyptian does not insert a present-tense verb in these neutral statements. It simply places the subject before a noun, adjective, location phrase, or participle: أنا تعبان، منى دكتورة، المفاتيح على الترابيزة.
The common learner form هو يكون تعبان is therefore not a wordier version of هو تعبان. In ordinary current-time speech it is a calque. Forms of كان / يكون are real Egyptian verbs, but they contribute past time, recurrence, possibility, or another selected meaning; they are not empty translations of English am/is/are.
Diagnostic 1: is the predicate current identity, description, or location?
If the answer is yes, use no copular verb. The subject and predicate form a complete present clause. Time comes from context or an adverb such as دلوقتي “now” and النهارده “today.”
❌ أنا بكون تعبان قوي دلوقتي.
Incorrect for a simple current state—بكون adds a recurring or conditional meaning.
✅ أنا تعبان دلوقتي، فحنزل بدري.
ana taʿbān dilwaʾti, fa-ḥanzil badri.
I'm tired now, so I'll leave early.
❌ منى بتكون مهندسة في الشركة دي.
Incorrect for neutral present identity; English ‘is’ has been copied as بتكون.
✅ منى مهندسة في الشركة دي.
Mona mohandisa fish-sharika di.
Mona is an engineer at this company.
❌ المفاتيح بتكون على الترابيزة.
Incorrect if the speaker is simply reporting where the keys are now.
✅ المفاتيح على الترابيزة جنب الشنطة.
il-mafātīḥ ʿala t-tarābēza gamb ish-shanṭa.
The keys are on the table next to the bag.
English hides the shared structure because it inserts be in all three. Egyptian instead treats the noun مهندسة, adjective تعبان, and prepositional phrase على الترابيزة as predicates in their own right.
Diagnostic 2: does agreement belong on the predicate?
Deleting be does not delete agreement. A predicate adjective or participle still reflects the subject's gender and, with human plurals, number. English keeps ready unchanged; Egyptian contrasts جاهز، جاهزة، جاهزين.
❌ هي يكون جاهز للاجتماع.
Incorrect twice over: neutral present يكون is unnecessary, and the adjective fails to agree with هي.
✅ هي جاهزة للاجتماع، بس المدير لسه ماجاش.
hiyya gāhza lil-igtimāʿ, bass il-modīr lissa ma-gāsh.
She's ready for the meeting, but the manager hasn't arrived yet.
The subject pronoun remains because جاهزة does not by itself identify who is ready in a context-free sentence. Zero copula means “no linking verb,” not “delete the subject.” See pronouns in nominal sentences.
Diagnostic 3: is the clause negative?
Present nonverbal predicates normally take independent مش before the predicate. Do not create a form of be merely to carry English not.
❌ إحنا مابنكونش فاضيين النهارده.
Wrong for the intended simple state ‘we aren't free today’; verbal negation makes it habitual or conditional.
✅ إحنا مش فاضيين النهارده؛ ممكن نتقابل بكرة.
iḥna mish fāḍyīn in-nahārda; momkin nitʾābil bokra.
We aren't free today; we can meet tomorrow.
This contrasts with ما...ش around an ordinary finite verb: مابنشتغلش النهارده “we aren't working today.” Predicate type, not the English word not, chooses the negative pattern.
When يكون is genuinely needed
بيكون often presents a recurring state: “is usually,” “tends to be,” or “is the case when….” Bare يكون can follow a modal or another selecting expression. The form is legitimate when it adds this meaning.
لما بيسهر، بيكون تعبان في الشغل تاني يوم.
lamma biyishar, biyikūn taʿbān fish-shoghl tāni yōm.
When he stays up late, he tends to be tired at work the next day.
ممكن يكون الموبايل في العربية.
momkin yikūn il-mobāyl fil-ʿarabiyya.
The phone may be in the car.
The first is habitual, not a report about one current moment. In the second, ممكن licenses bare يكون and the clause expresses uncertainty. Compare the certain current statement الموبايل في العربية “the phone is in the car.”
Likewise, first-person أكون is correct after a selecting expression:
عايز أكون جاهز قبل الساعة تمانية.
ʿāyiz akūn gāhiz ʾabl is-sāʿa tamānya.
I want to be ready before eight o'clock. (male speaker)
Here “being ready” is the wanted situation. Removing أكون would change the syntax and meaning; this is not the rejected English calque.
Past and explicit future are different
Zero copula is the neutral present pattern. Past states normally use agreeing كان. An explicitly projected future state commonly uses حـ + بقى/يبقى in everyday Cairo.
سلمى كانت تعبانة امبارح، بس النهارده أحسن.
Salma kānit taʿbāna mbāriḥ, bass in-nahārda aḥsan.
Salma was tired yesterday, but she's better today.
إحنا حنبقى جاهزين بعد الضهر.
iḥna ḥanibʾa gāhzīn baʿd iḍ-ḍohr.
We'll be ready in the afternoon.
Do not generalize “Arabic has no be.” Egyptian has several copular strategies; it simply lacks an obligatory empty present copula in these predicates.
The linking pronoun is not a general present copula
Between two definite phrases, هو، هي، هم can separate subject from predicate and often add identification or focus. It is useful, but inserting it into every sentence because English has is produces unwanted emphasis.
أحمد هو مهندس.
Aḥmad huwwa mohandis.
Ahmed—he is an engineer. (grammatical with identifying focus, but heavy for a neutral statement of profession)
✅ أحمد مهندس، وأخته دكتورة.
Aḥmad mohandis, wi-okhto doktōra.
Ahmed is an engineer, and his sister is a doctor.
By contrast, المشكلة هي المواعيد “the problem is the schedule” naturally uses هي to mark the boundary between two definite noun phrases. This is information structure, not English-style conjugation.
Register and variation
The zero-copula pattern is mainstream Cairene (informal/neutral) and broadly Egyptian. Formal MSA also has zero copula in many present nominal sentences, though its vocabulary and agreement may differ (formal). Code-switched professional speech can place an English technical predicate after an Arabic subject without changing the basic syntax (professional/code-switched). Regional and community varieties may differ in pronouns, vowels, or future strategies, but none should be dismissed as “broken” because it differs from Cairo. The correction here targets one specific English transfer: using a present form of كان as a meaningless link.
Common Mistakes
Final mixed correction set
1. Current location
❌ المدير بيكون في مكتبه دلوقتي.
Incorrect for a direct report about the manager's location now.
✅ المدير في مكتبه دلوقتي، استناه هنا.
il-modīr fi maktabo dilwaʾti, istannāh hina.
The manager is in his office now; wait for him here.
2. Present question
❌ إنتي بتكوني مستعجلة؟
Incorrect for the neutral question ‘Are you in a hurry?’; بتكوني suggests a recurring situation.
✅ إنتي مستعجلة ولا عندك وقت؟
inti mostaʿgila walla ʿandik waʾt?
Are you in a hurry, or do you have time? (to one woman)
3. A real habitual يكون
يوم الجمعة هو في البيت عادة.
yōm il-gomʿa huwwa fil-bēt ʿāda.
On Fridays, he is at home as a rule. (understandable; the following habitual version packages the recurring schedule more explicitly)
✅ يوم الجمعة بيكون في البيت عادة.
yōm il-gomʿa biyikūn fil-bēt ʿāda.
On Fridays, he's usually at home.
Key Takeaways
- Use subject + predicate with no verb for neutral present identity, description, and location.
- Keep agreement on adjectives and participles even though there is no copular verb.
- Negate these predicates with مش.
- Use بيكون only when it contributes recurrence or another real meaning; bare يكون appears after selectors such as ممكن.
- Past كان, future حنبقى, and linking هو/هي/هم each do specific work and are not empty equivalents of English be.
