English learners see a future time phrase and often add Egyptian حـ automatically. But حـ + imperfect presents a future event as a prediction, intention, or projection; it is not required every time English uses will or a future date. Mainstream Cairo also uses b-imperfect schedules, movement participles for settled arrangements, and bare verbs inside time clauses and modal complements.
The best diagnostic is: Where is the future meaning located? If the main clause projects an event, حـ is a strong choice. If a timetable, an arrangement, or a higher word such as عايز already organizes the event, another form may be required.
See scheduled future forms for the full timetable-versus-prediction system.
The choice map
| Future viewpoint | Main form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| prediction or intention | ḥa-imperfect | حيمطر ḥa-yimṭar |
| published schedule | b-imperfect + time | القطر بيطلع بكرة |
| settled movement arrangement | active participle + time | أنا مسافر بكرة |
| when/before clause | bare imperfect | لما أوصل |
| after desire, necessity, possibility | bare imperfect | عايز أروح |
الجو حيسخن آخر الأسبوع حسب التوقعات.
il-gaww ḥa-yiskhan ʾākhir il-ʾusbūʿ ḥasab it-tawaʾʾoʿāt.
The weather will get warmer at the end of the week, according to the forecast.
This is a genuine prediction, so حـ is exactly right. The problem is overuse, not the marker itself.
Common Mistakes
These six diagnoses separate true structural errors from grammatical choices that merely change viewpoint.
Timetable versus prediction: both can be grammatical
For a published departure, the b-imperfect presents the time as part of the current schedule. حيطلع is grammatical, but it sounds more like a prediction or statement about what will happen.
✅ الأتوبيس حيطلع بكرة الساعة ستة لو الطريق فتح.
il-ʾotobīs ḥa-yiṭlaʿ bukra s-sāʿa sitta law iṭ-ṭarīʾ fitiḥ.
The bus will leave tomorrow at six if the road opens. (valid projection)
✅ الأتوبيس بيطلع بكرة الساعة ستة حسب الجدول.
il-ʾotobīs biyiṭlaʿ bukra s-sāʿa sitta ḥasab il-gadwal.
The bus leaves tomorrow at six according to the timetable.
Settled arrangement versus intention: both can be grammatical
Movement participles often present a planned trip as already arranged. A future verb can be valid, but it shifts toward intention or prediction.
✅ أنا حسافر اسكندرية بكرة لو خلصت الشغل.
ʾana ḥasāfir Iskandariyya bukra law khallaṣt ish-shoghl.
I'll travel to Alexandria tomorrow if I finish the work. (valid intention under a condition)
✅ أنا مسافر اسكندرية بكرة الصبح والتذكرة معايا.
ʾana mosāfir Iskandariyya bukra ṣ-ṣobḥ wit-tazkara maʿāya.
I'm traveling to Alexandria tomorrow morning, and I have the ticket. (settled arrangement; male speaker)
3. Adding ḥa- inside a لما time clause
In the mainstream open-future pattern, لما takes a bare imperfect. The main clause can carry حـ.
❌ لما حتوصل البيت، حكلمك.
Incorrect in the neutral Cairo future-time pattern—the لما clause should be bare.
✅ لما توصل البيت، حكلمك بعد العشا.
lamma tōṣal il-bēt, ḥakallimak baʿd il-ʿasha.
When you get home, I'll call you after dinner. (to one man)
4. Adding ḥa- after عايز
عايز already marks desire about the following action, so the complement is bare. English want to go later does not require a future marker on go.
❌ هي عايزة حتغير الشغل الشهر الجاي.
Incorrect—the desired action after عايزة must be bare.
✅ هي عايزة تغير الشغل الشهر الجاي.
hiyya ʿāyza tighayyar ish-shoghl ish-shahr il-gāy.
She wants to change jobs next month.
5. Adding ḥa- after لازم or ممكن
Necessity and possibility license bare complements. Future time can come from بكرة or the wider context.
❌ لازم حنسلم الورق بكرة.
Incorrect—لازم selects bare نسلم, even though the deadline is future.
✅ لازم نسلم الورق بكرة قبل الضهر.
lāzim nisallim il-waraʾ bukra ʾabl iḍ-ḍohr.
We have to submit the paperwork tomorrow before noon.
❌ ممكن حييجوا يوم الجمعة.
Incorrect after ممكن in the intended possibility construction—the following verb is bare.
✅ ممكن ييجوا يوم الجمعة لو خلصوا بدري.
momkin yīgu yōm il-gomʿa law khallaṣu badri.
They might come on Friday if they finish early.
6. Attaching ḥa- directly to an adjective
Future nominal predicates need a verbal host, commonly يبقى. حـ cannot simply prefix جاهز or فاضية.
❌ النسخة حجاهزة بعد ساعة.
Incorrect—an adjective cannot host the future prefix.
✅ النسخة حتبقى جاهزة بعد ساعة.
in-noskha ḥa-tibʾa gāhza baʿd sāʿa.
The copy will be ready in an hour.
7. Stacking حـ on top of the b-imperfect
The future prefix replaces the outer بـ; the two markers do not stack.
❌ هو حبيكتب التقرير بكرة.
Incorrect marker stack—future حـ combines with the imperfect without بـ.
✅ هو حيكتب التقرير بكرة بعد الاجتماع.
huwwa ḥa-yiktib it-taʾrīr bukra baʿd il-igtimāʿ.
He'll write the report tomorrow after the meeting.
8. Adding حـ after قبل ما
Like لما, future قبل ما normally selects a bare imperfect in the subordinate clause.
❌ اقفل الكمبيوتر قبل ما حتمشي.
Incorrect in the mainstream future-time pattern—the verb after قبل ما is bare.
✅ اقفل الكمبيوتر قبل ما تمشي من المكتب.
iʾfil il-kombyūtar ʾabl ma timshi min il-maktab.
Turn off the computer before you leave the office. (to one man)
ḥa- is grammatical when viewpoint changes
Do not “correct” every future حـ beside a calendar time. Compare:
المحل بيفتح بكرة الساعة عشرة.
il-maḥall biyiftaḥ bukra s-sāʿa ʿashara.
The shop opens tomorrow at ten. (published schedule)
المحل حيفتح بكرة لو الكهربا رجعت.
il-maḥall ḥa-yiftaḥ bukra law il-kahraba rigʿit.
The shop will open tomorrow if the power comes back. (projection under a condition)
The time is future in both. The first treats opening as a timetable fact; the second predicts an outcome. This distinction is discourse, not certainty measured by a clock.
Formal Arabic may use سـ، سوف or other constructions (formal/MSA). They are legitimate in formal writing and prepared speech, not errors to stigmatize. Regional Egyptian, age, class, and community varieties may favor هـ spelling or distribute participial futures differently (regional/social). The guide’s production baseline keeps joined حـ in ordinary examples.
Final mixed correction set
❌ قبل ما حنمشي، لازم حنقفل الشبابيك.
Incorrect twice—قبل ما and لازم both license bare verbs.
✅ قبل ما نمشي، لازم نقفل الشبابيك كويس.
ʾabl ma nimshi, lāzim niʾfil ish-shabābīk kowayyis.
Before we leave, we have to close the windows properly.
✅ المحاضرة حتبدأ كل اتنين الساعة تسعة حسب البرنامج.
il-moḥāḍara ḥa-tibdaʾ koll itnēn is-sāʿa tisʿa ḥasab il-barnāmig.
The lecture will start every Monday at nine according to the program. (grammatical projection, but less congruent with a fixed schedule)
✅ المحاضرة بتبدأ كل اتنين الساعة تسعة حسب البرنامج.
il-moḥāḍara bitibdaʾ koll itnēn is-sāʿa tisʿa ḥasab il-barnāmig.
The lecture starts every Monday at nine according to the program.
❌ إحنا مخططين حنزور المتحف بعد الامتحان.
Incorrect in the compact complement frame—مخططين already selects the planned action.
✅ إحنا مخططين نزور المتحف بعد الامتحان.
iḥna mokhaṭṭiṭīn nizūr il-matḥaf baʿd il-imtiḥān.
We're planning to visit the museum after the exam.
