مع كده maʿ kida and رغم كده raghm kida both mean “even so,” “despite that,” or “nevertheless.” They point back to a fact or stretch of discourse and announce that an expected conclusion does not follow. The weather was bad; مع كده they went out. The evidence was incomplete; رغم كده the committee made a decision.
They are discourse markers, not simply two-word translations of English however. كده refers anaphorically to the preceding situation. The marker acknowledges that situation and then reorients the argument. This differs from subordinate مع إن / رغم إن, which introduce the concessive fact inside one sentence; see concessive clauses.
Rule 1: establish the conceded fact before the marker
Because كده points back, the listener needs an accessible antecedent: a stated proposition, a visible circumstance, or shared knowledge. The marker then introduces the proposition that remains true despite it.
il-maṭar kān shadīd, wi-maʿ kida l-mātsh itlaʿib fi miʿādo
The rain was heavy; even so, the match was played on schedule.
il-ʾadilla mish kāmla, raghm kida l-lagna ʾarrarit tikammil it-taḥʾīʾ
The evidence is incomplete; nevertheless, the committee decided to continue the investigation.
The second proposition is not random contrast. Heavy rain normally threatens a match; incomplete evidence normally discourages a decision. Concession makes that defeated expectation part of the message.
Rule 2: مع كده is the more conversational default
In mainstream Cairo, مع كده is common in everyday problem-solving, disagreement, and narration (informal/neutral). It often sounds like a speaker accepts the other point but keeps their original conclusion.
fāhim ʾinn iṭ-ṭarīʾ ṭawīl, bass maʿ kida ʾafaḍḍal nirūḥ bil-ʿarabiyya
I understand the road is long, but even so, I’d rather go by car.
hiyya lissa gidīda fish-shoghl, wi-maʿ kida btitʿāmil maʿ il-ʿomala bi-thiʾa
She’s still new at the job, yet she deals with clients confidently.
The English translation may use yet or omit an explicit equivalent. Egyptian مع كده keeps the speaker’s acknowledgement audible and can make disagreement less abrupt.
Rule 3: رغم كده foregrounds the obstacle more strongly
رغم كده is also current Egyptian. It often sounds a little more deliberate, emphatic, or argumentative than مع كده, especially in careful professional speech and writing (neutral/semi-formal). The distinction is a tendency, not a rigid grammatical split.
it-tagriba fishlit marraten; raghm kida l-farīʾ garrab ṭarīʾa tālta
The experiment failed twice; despite that, the team tried a third method.
it-taḥzīrāt kānit wāḍḥa, wi-raghm kida nās ktīr shārikit bayānātha
The warnings were clear, and nevertheless many people shared their data.
In both examples, رغم كده treats the preceding obstacle as substantial. مع كده would remain grammatical but would sound slightly more conversational and less rhetorically weighted.
The same English subtitle: “Even so”
il-waʾt ḍayyaʾ, maʿ kida momkin nikhallaṣ law ʾassamna sh-shoghl
Time is short; even so, we can finish if we divide the work. (conversational encouragement)
il-waʾt ḍayyaʾ, raghm kida l-ʾidāra moṣirra ʿala nafs il-mīʿād
Time is short; even so, management insists on the same deadline. (more pointed evaluation)
The markers do not create the difference alone; proposition and intonation matter. Still, مع كده readily supports cooperative persistence, while رغم كده often highlights that the obstacle should have counted for more.
Rule 4: do not confuse discourse concession with subordinate concession
مع إن / رغم إن take a following proposition and package it as the conceded background. مع كده / رغم كده normally look backward to material already established.
maʿ ʾinn il-ʿarabiyya ʾadīma, lissa ḥālitha kuwayyisa
Although the car is old, it’s still in good condition. (subordinate concession)
il-ʿarabiyya ʾadīma. maʿ kida, lissa ḥālitha kuwayyisa
The car is old. Even so, it’s still in good condition. (discourse-level concession)
The truth conditions are close, but the information structure differs. The second version lets the first statement stand as its own move, then responds to it.
Rule 5: marker position shapes the turn
The usual position is at the start of the response or second clause, often after attached و. A parenthetical position is possible, but it gives the marker narrower prosodic space and can sound more reflective.
ʾana, maʿ kida, mish nadmān ʾinni garrabt
Even so, I don’t regret trying. (reflective parenthetical stance)
wi-raghm kida, l-ʾarār miḥtāg morāgʿa ʾānūniyya
Nevertheless, the decision needs legal review. (turn-initial argumentative move)
Strong stress on the marker can challenge the relevance of the previous objection. Softer, lower stress can acknowledge it cooperatively before moving on.
Paragraph-level argument
it-taklifa ʾaʿla min il-motawaʾʾaʿ, wi-l-mīʿād itʾakhkhar ʾosbūʿ. maʿ kida, l-mashrūʿ ḥall moshkila ḥaʾīʾiyya ʿand il-ʿomala. wi-raghm kida, n-nagāḥ il-ʾawwalāni mish kifāya; lāzim niʾīs il-istikhdām li-modda ʾaṭwal ʾabl ma niwassaʿ il-khidma
Costs were higher than expected, and the deadline slipped by a week. Even so, the project solved a real customer problem. Nevertheless, the initial success is not enough; we need to measure use for longer before expanding the service.
The first concession reverses a negative evaluation. The second prevents the resulting positive evaluation from becoming overconfident. The markers manage the direction of the argument, not just relations between adjacent sentences.
A three-turn exchange
il-makān ghāli wi-baʿīd ʿan il-mitro
The place is expensive and far from the metro.
ṣaḥḥ, maʿ kida masāḥto monāsba li-ʿadad in-nās
True; even so, its size suits the number of people.
raghm kida ʾana shāyif ʾinnina nidawwar ʿala badīl kamān
Nevertheless, I think we should look for another option too.
Each speaker accepts part of the preceding turn while redirecting the decision. A bare بس could mark contrast, but these concessive markers explicitly preserve the acknowledged point.
Register and variation
Everyday Cairo strongly favors مع كده (informal/neutral). رغم كده is common across conversation, journalism, and professional discussion and often sounds more deliberate (neutral/semi-formal). Formal MSA-oriented discourse uses مع ذلك or رغم ذلك (formal).
kānat il-mawārid maḥdūda, wa-maʿa dhālika istamarra l-ʿamal
Resources were limited; nevertheless, the work continued. (formal MSA-oriented)
il-ʾimkāniyyāt kānit ʾalīla, wi-maʿ kida kammalna sh-shoghl
Resources were limited, but we kept the work going anyway. (ordinary Cairene)
The formal example is not an error; it belongs to a different code. Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, age, class, and community varieties differ in marker preference and pronunciation (regional/social). Political speech and scripted drama may stress رغم كده for rhetorical defiance (performance language); neutral conversation usually uses less theatrical delivery.
Common Mistakes
Using the marker with no recoverable antecedent
Infelicitous out of the blue—the listener has not been told what circumstance is being conceded.
il-ʾāʿa maḥgūza bokra, wi-maʿ kida ḥanilāʾi makān tāni lil-igtimāʿ
The hall is booked tomorrow; even so, we’ll find another place for the meeting.
Treating مع كده like a subordinate conjunction
Incorrect for ‘although it was cold’—مع كده looks backward and does not directly introduce the following conceded clause.
maʿ ʾinn il-gaww kān bard, kharagna nitmashsha
Although it was cold, we went out for a walk.
Using concession where there is only addition
Wrong without a context where clarity creates an expectation of length—the two properties are merely being added.
il-ʿarḍ wāḍiḥ wi-kamān ʾoṣayyar
The presentation is clear and short too.
Treating formal مع ذلك as a conversational error
maʿa dhālika, sanurāgiʿ il-iʾtirāḥ marra ʾukhra
Nevertheless, we will review the proposal again. (formal MSA-oriented; correct in that register)
maʿ kida, ḥanirāgiʿ il-iʾtirāḥ marra kamān
Even so, we’ll review the proposal once more. (ordinary Cairene)
Repeating the concessive marker where later relations are simple sequence
Overmarked—the distance creates a concessive relation with going, but ordering food and paying are ordinary later events.
il-makān kān baʿīd, wi-maʿ kida roḥna. ṭalabna ʾakl, wi-baʿden dafaʿna l-ḥisāb
The place was far away, but we went anyway. We ordered food and then paid the bill.
Key Takeaways
- Both markers point backward to an acknowledged circumstance and introduce an unexpected surviving conclusion.
- مع كده is the conversational default; رغم كده is often more deliberate or emphatic.
- Use مع إن / رغم إن to introduce a subordinate concessive clause; use ...كده to respond to established discourse.
- A clear antecedent and the defeated expectation are essential.
- Formal مع ذلك / رغم ذلك are valid register alternatives, not neutral Cairene defaults.
