做 (zuò) is the general-purpose "do / make / produce / be" verb — the one you reach for to cook (做饭), do homework (做作业), run a business (做生意), or work as a teacher (做老师). It has a near-homophone twin, 作 (also pronounced zuò), that means almost the same thing but belongs to a more formal, bookish register and is mostly frozen inside fixed compounds: 作业 (homework), 工作 (work), 作文 (composition), 作为 (as / in the capacity of). Because they sound identical, the challenge for a learner is not choosing between them freely — it's spelling the set words correctly. This page gives you a working rule and the fixed forms you have to know cold.
The one practical rule
Historically 作 is the older character and 做 a later, more colloquial spin-off; over the centuries they have drifted into a rough division of labor. You will be right the overwhelming majority of the time if you follow one rule: default to 做 for concrete, everyday "do/make," and treat 作 as something that mostly appears already welded inside set vocabulary. 做 pairs with tangible things you produce or physical activities you carry out; 作 leans abstract, literary, and institutional.
| Use 做 (concrete, everyday) | Use 作 (formal / fixed compound) |
|---|---|
| 做饭 (zuò fàn) — cook | 作业 (zuòyè) — homework |
| 做菜 (zuò cài) — make a dish | 工作 (gōngzuò) — work, job |
| 做作业 (zuò zuòyè) — do homework | 作文 (zuòwén) — essay, composition |
| 做生意 (zuò shēngyi) — do business | 作为 (zuòwéi) — as / serve as |
| 做老师 (zuò lǎoshī) — be a teacher | 作家 (zuòjiā) — writer |
| 做梦 (zuò mèng) — dream | 作品 (zuòpǐn) — a work (of art) |
| 做事 (zuò shì) — get things done | 合作 (hézuò) — cooperate |
| 做朋友 (zuò péngyou) — be friends | 作用 (zuòyòng) — effect, function |
今天晚上我来做饭。
jīntiān wǎnshang wǒ lái zuò fàn
I'll cook tonight. (informal) — cooking is concrete and physical, so 做饭.
写完作业才能看电视。
xiě wán zuòyè cái néng kàn diànshì
You can watch TV only after you finish your homework. (neutral) — 作业 is a fixed compound spelled with 作.
他辞了工作,自己做生意。
tā cí le gōngzuò, zìjǐ zuò shēngyi
He quit his job and went into business for himself. (neutral) — 工作 with 作, 做生意 with 做, side by side.
做 as "do," "make," and "be"
The reason 做 feels like a light verb is that it spans three English verbs at once. It's "make" when something concrete results (做饭, 做蛋糕), "do" for an activity (做作业, 做运动, 做家务), and "be / work as" when it takes a role or identity (做老师, 做医生, 做朋友). This last one overlaps with 当 (dāng) — see the become / be-a-role verbs page — with 做 leaning slightly toward "do the work of the role" and 当 toward "hold the position."
我妈妈做了三十年老师。
wǒ māma zuò le sānshí nián lǎoshī
My mom was a teacher for thirty years. (neutral) — 做 + role = 'work as'.
别做梦了,快去学习。
bié zuò mèng le, kuài qù xuéxí
Stop daydreaming and go study. (informal) — 做梦 literally 'make a dream'.
咱们做个朋友吧。
zánmen zuò ge péngyou ba
Let's be friends. (informal) — 做朋友 = be / become friends.
做人要诚实。
zuò rén yào chéngshí
You have to be honest as a person / in life. (neutral, slightly proverbial) — 做人 = conduct oneself, 'be a (decent) person'.
Where 作 shows up on its own
Outside frozen compounds, 作 still surfaces as a productive verb in formal and written contexts, especially with abstract objects: 作决定 (make a decision), 作报告 (give a report/presentation), 作调查 (conduct an investigation), 作介绍 (make an introduction). In everyday speech people usually swap these to 做 (做决定) or a plain verb, but you'll meet the 作 versions constantly in news, notices, and formal writing.
作为班长,他很负责任。
zuòwéi bānzhǎng, tā hěn fù zérèn
As class monitor, he's very responsible. (neutral) — 作为 = 'as / in the capacity of', always 作.
经理明天要作报告。
jīnglǐ míngtiān yào zuò bàogào
The manager is giving a presentation tomorrow. (formal) — 作报告 is the register-appropriate form; casual speech may say 做报告.
老师让我们写一篇作文。
lǎoshī ràng wǒmen xiě yì piān zuòwén
The teacher had us write a composition. (neutral) — 作文 is a set noun with 作.
Honest note: the 做/作 boundary is genuinely fuzzy, and even native writers and dictionaries disagree on a handful of words (做/作报告, 做/作贡献). Mainland style guides have nudged more of the concrete cases toward 做 over recent decades. Don't expect perfect logic — memorize the high-frequency fixed forms below and let the "concrete → 做" rule handle the rest.
Common Mistakes
1. Spelling 做饭 / 做生意 with 作. These are concrete everyday actions — they take 做.
❌ 我妈妈在家作饭。
Incorrect — cooking is concrete: it should be 做饭.
✅ 我妈妈在家做饭。
wǒ māma zài jiā zuò fàn
My mom is cooking at home. — 做饭.
2. Writing 作业 or 作文 with 做. As standalone nouns these are frozen with 作, even though you do homework with 做 (做作业).
❌ 老师留了很多做业。
Incorrect — the noun 'homework' is 作业, spelled with 作.
✅ 老师留了很多作业。
lǎoshī liú le hěn duō zuòyè
The teacher assigned a lot of homework. — 作业 with 作.
3. Writing 作为 as 做为. The formal "as / in the capacity of" is standardized as 作为.
❌ 做为学生,应该好好学习。
Nonstandard — the accepted form is 作为, with 作.
✅ 作为学生,应该好好学习。
zuòwéi xuésheng, yīnggāi hǎohǎo xuéxí
As a student, you should study hard. — 作为.
4. Over-using 作 in casual speech. In conversation, concrete "make a decision" is normally 做决定; 作决定 sounds stiff.
❌ 我很难作这个决定。
In casual chat this is overly formal — everyday Chinese says 做这个决定.
✅ 我很难做这个决定。
wǒ hěn nán zuò zhège juédìng
I find it hard to make this decision. — 做 in ordinary speech.
Key Takeaways
- 做 and 作 are both zuò and mean roughly "do / make"; the task is spelling, not choosing meaning.
- Rule of thumb: concrete, everyday → 做 (做饭, 做作业, 做生意, 做老师); abstract / formal / fixed compound → 作 (作业, 工作, 作文, 作为).
- 做 spans English "do," "make," and "be a role" — 做梦, 做菜, 做朋友, 做老师.
- Memorize the frozen 作 words (作业, 工作, 作文, 作为, 作家, 合作, 作用) — their spelling is fixed by convention.
- The boundary is genuinely fuzzy for a few words (做/作报告); even native writers vary, so lean on the concrete-vs-abstract test and learn the exceptions.
