玩 (wán) — play / have fun (and 逛 guàng stroll)

(wán) — very often 玩儿 (wánr) with the northern erhua — is the verb of enjoying yourself: goofing around, hanging out, larking about, going somewhere for fun. English "play" is a false friend here. English "play" reaches across instruments, sports, and games alike; Chinese splits that field. 玩 covers leisure, toys, video games, and pleasure trips, but the moment you "play" an instrument it becomes (tán) or (chuī), and a ball sport becomes or (tī). Learn 玩 as "have fun / hang out," not as a one-to-one swap for "play," and you'll dodge the classic 玩篮球 / 玩钢琴 mistakes.

Sense 1: play / have fun / mess around

The core sense — enjoy yourself, with a toy, a game, a gadget, or nothing in particular. 出去玩 "go out and have fun," 玩游戏 "play games," 玩手机 "mess about on the phone."

周末咱们出去玩儿吧,别老待在家里。

zhōumò zánmen chūqu wánr ba, bié lǎo dāi zài jiā lǐ

Let's go out and have some fun this weekend — don't just stay home all the time. (informal)

孩子们在小区的院子里玩得很开心。

háizimen zài xiǎoqū de yuànzi lǐ wán de hěn kāixīn

The kids are having a great time playing in the compound's courtyard.

别整天玩手机,眼睛都看坏了。

bié zhěng tiān wán shǒujī, yǎnjing dōu kàn huài le

Stop being on your phone all day — you'll ruin your eyes. (informal)

Sense 2: hang out (with people)

跟 someone 玩 is "hang out / socialise with" them — no toy required. 跟朋友玩 "hang out with friends," 一起玩 "spend time together."

他最近老跟一群大学同学一起玩。

tā zuìjìn lǎo gēn yì qún dàxué tóngxué yìqǐ wán

Lately he's always hanging out with a bunch of his uni friends. (informal)

我们俩从小玩到大,关系特别好。

wǒmen liǎ cóng xiǎo wán dào dà, guānxi tèbié hǎo

The two of us have been close since we were kids — really tight. (informal)

Sense 3: visit somewhere for pleasure

Tacked after a destination, 玩 turns a trip into a fun trip: 去北京玩 "go to Beijing for fun," 来我家玩 "come over to my place." It's the casual cousin of 旅游 "travel / tour."

暑假我打算去云南玩几天。

shǔjià wǒ dǎsuàn qù Yúnnán wán jǐ tiān

Over the summer I'm planning to spend a few days in Yunnan. (informal)

有空来上海玩,我带你到处逛逛。

yǒu kòng lái Shànghǎi wán, wǒ dài nǐ dàochù guàngguang

Come visit Shanghai when you're free — I'll take you around. (informal)

The neighbour: 逛 (guàng) — stroll / browse

(guàng) is a close relative worth learning alongside 玩: it means to stroll, wander, or browse shops with no fixed goal. 逛街 "go window-shopping / stroll the streets," 逛商店 "browse shops," 逛公园 "wander round a park." Where 玩 is broad "have fun," 逛 is specifically that unhurried, on-foot browsing.

周末我最喜欢一个人逛街,什么也不买。

zhōumò wǒ zuì xǐhuan yí ge rén guàng jiē, shénme yě bù mǎi

On weekends I love wandering the shops alone, not buying anything. (informal)

时间还早,我们去商场逛逛吧。

shíjiān hái zǎo, wǒmen qù shāngchǎng guàngguang ba

It's still early — let's go browse around the mall. (informal)

Grammar notes

玩 takes complements freely: 玩开心 "have fun" (degree), 玩一会儿 "play for a while," 好玩儿 "fun (adjective)." In the trip sense, note the word order — the place is reached with 去 / 来 and 玩 comes after it: 去北京玩, never *玩北京.

The border you must not cross is the "play" of skills. Ball games with the hands are (打篮球, 打乒乓球); with the feet, (踢足球). Musical instruments split by how you play them: strings and keyboards are (弹钢琴, 弹吉他), wind instruments are (吹笛子). 玩钢琴 isn't "play the piano" — at best it means idly fiddling with one. The one overlap is games: 玩游戏 and 打游戏 are both fine. For "watching" entertainment (films, TV) you want , not 玩.

Common Mistakes

1. Calquing "play basketball / football" with 玩. Ball sports are 打 (hands) or 踢 (feet).

❌ 他们下午去玩篮球。

Incorrect — basketball is 打篮球; soccer is 踢足球. 玩 doesn't cover ball sports.

✅ 他们下午去打篮球。

tāmen xiàwǔ qù dǎ lánqiú

They're going to play basketball this afternoon.

2. Calquing "play an instrument" with 玩. Piano/guitar are 弹; flute is 吹.

❌ 我妹妹会玩钢琴。

Incorrect — playing the piano is 弹钢琴 (弹, 'pluck/press'), not 玩钢琴.

✅ 我妹妹会弹钢琴。

wǒ mèimei huì tán gāngqín

My little sister can play the piano.

3. Putting the place after 玩 in a trip. The destination takes 去/来; 玩 follows it.

❌ 我想玩北京。

Incorrect — 'visit Beijing for fun' is 去北京玩, place before 玩.

✅ 我想去北京玩几天。

wǒ xiǎng qù Běijīng wán jǐ tiān

I want to go to Beijing for a few days of fun.

4. Using 玩 for browsing shops. Strolling/browsing is 逛, not 玩.

❌ 我们去玩街吧。

Incorrect — 'go window-shopping' is 逛街, not 玩街.

✅ 我们去逛街吧。

wǒmen qù guàng jiē ba

Let's go window-shopping.

Key Takeaways

  • 玩 (玩儿) = have fun / hang out / visit for pleasure — toys, games, gadgets, outings, people.
  • It is not English "play" across the board: instruments are 弹/吹, ball sports are 打/踢.
  • Only games overlap: 玩游戏 = 打游戏; but 玩篮球 and 玩钢琴 are both wrong.
  • Trip word order: destination + 去/来 first, then 玩 — 去云南玩, not *玩云南.
  • 逛 (guàng) is the specific "stroll / browse shops" verb: 逛街, 逛商场.

  • 打 (dǎ) — hit / play / a light verbHSK 1打 (dǎ) literally means 'hit / strike', but its real power is as a light verb: 打电话 (make a call), 打篮球 (play basketball), 打车 (hail a cab), 打扫 (clean) — the object, not 打, carries the meaning.
  • 看 (kàn) — look / watch / read / see (a doctor)HSK 1看 (kàn) is directed attention with the eyes or the mind: look at, watch, read silently (看书, 看电视), visit or see a doctor (看朋友, 看医生), reckon (我看…), and depend on (看情况). English splits watch / read / look / see — Chinese keeps one verb.
  • 去 (qù) — to goHSK 1去 (qù) is 'go, away from where the speaker is': the destination attaches directly (去北京, no 'to'), it frames purpose in serial verbs (去买东西), and it works as a directional complement (回去, 拿去) — the mirror image of 来 (lái).
