换 (huàn) — change / exchange / swap

(huàn) means "to change / exchange / swap / replace." Its core image is two things trading places, or an old item making way for a new one: 换钱 (change money), 换衣服 (change clothes), 换工作 (change jobs), 换手机 (get a new phone). This is the crucial thing English speakers must hold onto: 换 is replacement — one item goes out, a different one comes in. It is not the same as modifying something in place (that's 改) or watching something transform by itself (that's 变). A new phone is 换手机; editing a document is 改文件; the weather turning is 天气变了.

Sense 1: replace / put a different one

The everyday sense: swap out the item you have for a different one.

wǒ xiǎng huàn ge dà diǎnr de fángzi

I'd like to move to (swap for) a bigger place.

Your clothes are wet — go change into a dry one.

zhège shǒujī tài jiù le, gāi huàn le

This phone is too old — it's time to replace it.

Sense 2: exchange money / trade one thing for another

For money it's 换钱 (change money), 换零钱 (get change / small notes). To name what you swap into, use 换成 (huànchéng) "change into," typically inside a 把-sentence.

qǐngwèn, zài nǎr kěyǐ huàn qián

Excuse me, where can I change money?

wǒ xiǎng bǎ zhèxiē Měiyuán huànchéng Rénmínbì

I'd like to change these US dollars into RMB.

Sense 3: transfer / change transport

换车 (change vehicles), 换乘 (transfer, on public transit), 换地铁 (switch to the metro).

zuò dào Rénmín Guǎngchǎng huàn èr hào xiàn

Ride to People's Square and transfer to Line 2.

换 vs 改 vs 变

This trio is the heart of the page. All three touch "change," but they act on different things:

  • (huàn) — replace X with a different Y. Two items; one leaves.
  • (gǎi) — alter / correct the same X, keeping it. 改名字 (change your name), 改计划 (revise the plan), 改作业 (mark/correct homework).
  • (biàn) — transform / become, often spontaneous and intransitive. 天气变了, 变成蝴蝶 (turn into a butterfly).

jìhuà gǎi le, wǒmen xià zhōu zài qù

The plan has changed — we'll go next week instead. (same plan, revised →

zhè jǐ nián tā biàn le hěn duō, chéngshú le bù shǎo

He's changed a lot these past few years — grown much more mature. (transformed on his own → 变)

The transforming sense of 变 belongs with the wider become-verbs family.

Grammar notes

换 takes for the completed swap and pairs readily with 把: 把 A 换成 B "change A into B." To swap with another person, mark them with 跟 / 和: 跟我换座位 "swap seats with me."

💡
Mental test: if only one thing stays and gets modified, it's 改; if something turns into something else by itself, it's 变; if you take out one item and put in another, it's 换 — "out with the old, in with the new."
For related transactions see 买/卖 (buy/sell) and, for the general "do/make" workhorse, 做 (zuò); for currency figures, money spoken and written.

Common Mistakes

1. Using 变 for a deliberate swap. You replace a phone on purpose — that's 换, not 变 (which is spontaneous transformation).

Incorrect — deliberately swapping is 换; 变 is 'transform on its own'.

wǒ xiǎng huàn yí ge xīn shǒujī

I want to get a new phone.

2. Dropping 成 in "change into." The A-into-B result needs 成.

Incomplete — 'change into' is 换成: 把美元换成人民币.

bǎ Měiyuán huànchéng Rénmínbì

Change US dollars into RMB.

3. Using 换 when you mean to revise the same thing. Editing/adjusting the same item is 改.

Misleading — 换计划 means scrap it for a different one; to tweak the same plan use 改.

wǒmen gǎi yíxià jìhuà ba, chūfā shíjiān zǎo yìdiǎn

Let's adjust the plan — make the departure a bit earlier.

4. Forgetting 跟/和 when swapping with a person. The other party is marked with a coverb.

Incorrect — swapping WITH someone needs

nǐ néng gēn wǒ huàn ge zuòwèi ma

Could you swap seats with me?

Key Takeaways

  • 换 (huàn) = replace / swap: one item out, a different one in (换手机, 换工作, 换钱).
  • "Change A into B" is the 换成 frame, usually with 把: 把美元换成人民币.
  • Keep the trio apart: replaces, revises the same thing, transforms on its own.
  • Swap with someone → mark them with 跟/和: 跟我换座位.

  • 做 / 作 (zuò) — do / make (and 干 gàn)HSK 1做 (zuò) is the all-purpose 'do / make / be (a role)' — 做饭, 做作业, 做生意, 做老师 — while 作 is its written twin locked into fixed compounds (工作, 作业) and 干 (gàn) is the blunt spoken alternative.
HSK 1Chinese money has two registers: you SPEAK 块/毛/分 (三块五) but WRITE 元/角/分 (三元五角). The trailing unit is dropped in speech (三块五 = ¥3.50), and 'two yuan' is 两块, never 二块.
