读 / 念 (dú / niàn) — to read (aloud), study

(dú) and its close partner (niàn) both cover two ideas English keeps under one word "read": reading text out loud, and studying at a school. 读书 is "read / study," 读大学 is "go to university," 念课文 is "read the passage aloud." The trap for English speakers is that neither word is the default for silent reading. When you curl up with a novel or skim the news, Chinese reaches for (kàn) — 看书, 看报 — because 读 and 念 carry an undertone of vocalizing or formal study. Sort out that 读/念-vs-看 split and you'll pick the right verb every time.

Sense 1: read aloud

For reading text out loud — in class, to a child, or checking pronunciation — use 读 or 念. 念 is especially tied to voicing, and 怎么念 is the standard "how is this pronounced?" A "once through" is counted with 一遍 (see 遍 as a frequency measure).

请把这段课文读一遍。

qǐng bǎ zhè duàn kèwén dú yí biàn

Please read this passage aloud once. — 读一遍 'read through once'.

妈妈每天晚上给孩子念故事。

māma měitiān wǎnshang gěi háizi niàn gùshi

Every night Mom reads stories to the kids. — 念给…听 'read aloud to'.

老师,这个字怎么念?

lǎoshī, zhège zì zěnme niàn

Teacher, how do you read this character? — 念 = pronounce/say aloud.

Sense 2: study / attend school

读 (and colloquially 念) means to study a subject or be enrolled at a school or level: 读大学 "attend university," 读研(究生) "do a master's," 读三年级 "be in third grade," 读文科 "study humanities." Here 读 takes the institution, level, or field as its object.

他在北京大学读研究生。

tā zài Běijīng Dàxué dú yánjiūshēng

He's doing a master's at Peking University.

我女儿今年读三年级了。

wǒ nǚ'ér jīnnián dú sān niánjí le

My daughter is in third grade this year.

你打算读文科还是理科?

nǐ dǎsuàn dú wénkē háishì lǐkē

Are you planning to study humanities or sciences?

The idiom 读书 (dúshū) is broad: literally "read books," it means "study" in general and "be at school."

他从小就爱读书,成绩很好。

tā cóngxiǎo jiù ài dúshū, chéngjì hěn hǎo

He's loved studying since he was little; his grades are great.

Sense 3: 读/念 vs 看 — aloud/study vs silent

This is the distinction to internalize. is the eyes-only, for-content verb: 看书 "read a book (silently, for pleasure or information)," 看报 "read the paper," 看短信 "read a text." 读/念 imply your voice is involved, or that it's structured study. Compare the pair with the full 看 entry.

我喜欢睡前看一会儿书。

wǒ xǐhuan shuì qián kàn yíhuìr shū

I like to read for a bit before bed. — silent, for pleasure → 看书.

他每天早上一边喝咖啡一边读报。

tā měitiān zǎoshang yìbiān hē kāfēi yìbiān dú bào

Every morning he reads the paper over coffee. — 读报 as a habitual 'reading' routine.

Grammar notes

"Read it to me" uses 念/读 + 给…听. The listener is introduced by 给, and the sentence often ends in 听: 念给我听 / 读给我听 "read it aloud to me."

"Read once through" takes a frequency complement. The count 一遍 follows the verb: 读一遍, 念两遍. 遍 stresses a full pass from start to finish (versus 次, a plain occurrence).

Don't confuse 读 with 学. 读 is "read aloud" or "attend a school/be in a field"; 学 / 学习 is "learn a subject or skill." You 学英语 (learn English) but 读英语 would mean read English aloud.

Common Mistakes

1. Using 读 for casual, silent, for-fun reading. A novel for pleasure is 看.

❌ 我昨天读了一本小说,很好看。

Off — silent leisure reading is 看; 读 implies aloud/study.

✅ 我昨天看了一本小说,很好看。

wǒ zuótiān kàn le yì běn xiǎoshuō, hěn hǎokàn

I read a novel yesterday; it was great.

2. Using 学习 for the school itself. "Attend university" is 读/上大学.

❌ 他在美国学习大学。

Wrong — you don't 学习 a school; 'attend university' is 读大学 / 上大学.

✅ 他在美国读大学。

tā zài Měiguó dú dàxué

He's at university in the US.

3. Using 看 for "how do you pronounce this?" Pronouncing needs 念/读.

❌ 这个字怎么看?

Wrong — that asks 'how does it look?'; to pronounce, use 怎么念 / 怎么读.

✅ 这个字怎么读?

zhège zì zěnme dú

How do you read this character?

4. Using 读 to mean 'learn a subject.' Learning a skill/subject is 学.

❌ 我在读英语,想考雅思。

Off — that says 'read English aloud'; to learn it, use 学英语.

✅ 我在学英语,想考雅思。

wǒ zài xué Yīngyǔ, xiǎng kǎo Yǎsī

I'm learning English; I want to take the IELTS.

Key Takeaways

  • 读 / 念 = read aloud and study at a school (读大学, 念课文); 读 is the general/written word, 念 leans toward vocalizing.
  • For silent, for-content reading (a book, the news, a text), use : 看书, 看报 — not 读/念.
  • "Read it to me" = 念/读 + 给…听; "read once through" = 读一遍 (frequency complement).
  • Don't swap 读 for — 读 is read-aloud / attend-school, 学 is learn-a-subject.

  • 写 (xiě) — to writeHSK 1写 (xiě) is to write — put characters, letters, and text on the page (写字, 写信, 写作业) and to compose or author (写小说, 写歌). It wants an object or a result complement (写完, 写好, 写错, 写下来) — bare 写 sounds unfinished. Keep it apart from 画 (draw).
