懂 (dǒng) means to understand or comprehend — to actually grasp the content of a language, a subject, or a situation, not just to be aware of it. You'll meet it two ways: as a stand-alone verb (我懂了 "I get it," 你懂中文吗 "do you understand Chinese?"), and — extremely commonly — as a resultative complement stuck onto a perception verb: 听懂 "understand what you hear," 看懂 "understand what you read." The key English-speaker adjustment is that Chinese folds ability to understand into a potential complement (听得懂 / 听不懂) rather than using a separate "can." 懂 also sits at the center of a cluster of "know/understand" verbs — 明白, 知道, 认识 — that English blurs together, so the second half of this page untangles them.
Sense 1: understand (the main verb)
As a main verb, 懂 takes the thing understood as its object — a language, a subject, a point. 懂了 is the standard "got it."
我懂了,谢谢你的解释。
wǒ dǒng le, xièxie nǐ de jiěshì
I get it now, thanks for explaining.
你懂日语吗?能帮我翻译一下吗?
nǐ dǒng Rìyǔ ma? néng bāng wǒ fānyì yíxià ma
Do you understand Japanese? Can you translate this for me?
他懂很多电脑方面的知识。
tā dǒng hěnduō diànnǎo fāngmiàn de zhīshi
He knows a lot about computers. — 懂 = have real command of a field.
There's also the fixed 懂事 (dǒngshì) "sensible, mature" — literally "understands things."
这孩子很懂事,从来不让父母操心。
zhè háizi hěn dǒngshì, cónglái bú ràng fùmǔ cāoxīn
This kid is very sensible; he never makes his parents worry.
Sense 2: understand-by-… (the resultative complement)
Attach 懂 to a perception verb and it says the perceiving succeeded in producing comprehension: 听懂 = listen + understand, 看懂 = look/read + understand. The potential form inserts 得/不: 听得懂 "can understand (by ear)," 听不懂 "can't understand." This is how Chinese normally expresses "(can't) understand" — see the potential complement with resultatives and the wider potential overview.
老师说得太快,我没听懂。
lǎoshī shuō de tài kuài, wǒ méi tīngdǒng
The teacher spoke too fast, I didn't catch it. — 没 negates the achieved result.
这封信是法语写的,我看不懂。
zhè fēng xìn shì Fǎyǔ xiě de, wǒ kàn bu dǒng
This letter is in French, I can't read it. — potential 看不懂 'unable to understand by reading'.
你慢点讲,这次我完全听得懂。
nǐ màn diǎn jiǎng, zhè cì wǒ wánquán tīng de dǒng
Speak slowly, this time I can fully understand. — potential 听得懂 'able to understand'.
The complement 懂 has its own detailed page: resultative 懂 (comprehension).
懂 vs 明白 vs 知道 vs 认识
These four are the classic "understand/know" tangle. The distinction is what kind of knowing:
| Verb | Core sense | Typical object |
|---|---|---|
| 懂 dǒng | grasp the content / have command of | a language, a subject, a meaning |
| 明白 míngbai | become clear about, "the penny drops" | a point, a reason, what's going on |
| 知道 zhīdào | know a fact, be aware of | a piece of information, that-clause |
| 认识 rènshi | be acquainted with, recognize | a person, a character, a place |
我知道他的名字,但是不认识他。
wǒ zhīdào tā de míngzi, dànshì bú rènshi tā
I know his name, but I don't know him personally. — 知道 fact vs 认识 acquaintance.
你解释了半天,我才明白是怎么回事。
nǐ jiěshì le bàntiān, wǒ cái míngbai shì zěnme huí shì
After you explained for ages, I finally understood what was going on. — 明白 = it became clear.

Grammar notes
Ability lives in the potential complement, not in 能. "I can't understand it" is 听不懂 / 看不懂, not ✗我不能懂. The result verb is where the (in)ability shows up. You can, however, say 我不懂 "I don't understand it" for the plain state.
Negation splits by meaning. A one-off failure to understand is 没懂 / 没听懂 ("didn't get it"). A general inability is the potential 听不懂 / 看不懂 ("can't get it"). The flat state is 不懂 ("don't understand it / know nothing about it").
Common Mistakes
1. Building "can't understand" with 不能懂. Ability goes into the potential complement.
❌ 我不能懂中文。
Wrong — use 我听不懂 / 我看不懂 / 我不懂 (中文).
✅ 老师说得太快,我听不懂。
lǎoshī shuō de tài kuài, wǒ tīng bu dǒng
The teacher speaks too fast; I can't follow.
2. Using 懂 for a known fact. Awareness of a fact is 知道.
❌ 我懂他明天来。
Wrong — a fact you're aware of is 知道, not 懂.
✅ 我知道他明天来。
wǒ zhīdào tā míngtiān lái
I know he's coming tomorrow.
3. Using 懂 for recognizing a character or person. Recognition is 认识.
❌ 这个汉字我不懂,不会念。
Wrong — not recognizing a character is 不认识, not 不懂.
✅ 这个汉字我不认识,不会念。
zhège Hànzì wǒ bú rènshi, bú huì niàn
I don't recognize this character; I can't read it.
4. Negating the complement with 不 for a past failure. A failed result uses 没.
❌ 刚才广播说什么,我不听懂。
Wrong — a one-off failure to understand is 没听懂 (or ability 听不懂).
✅ 刚才广播说什么,我没听懂。
gāngcái guǎngbō shuō shénme, wǒ méi tīngdǒng
I didn't catch what the announcement just said.
Key Takeaways
- 懂 = grasp the content of a language, subject, or situation — as a main verb (我懂了) and as a complement (听懂 / 看懂).
- Put ability inside the potential complement: 听得懂 / 听不懂, not 不能懂.
- Negate by meaning: 没听懂 (didn't get it once) vs 听不懂 (can't, in general) vs 不懂 (the flat state).
- Keep the cluster straight: 懂 grasp content · 明白 it becomes clear · 知道 know a fact · 认识 be acquainted / recognize.
