Once a question is on the table, you rarely want to repeat the whole thing to redirect it at someone else — English shortcuts this with "and you?" or "what about…?" Chinese does exactly the same with a single toneless particle: 呢 (ne). Attach 呢 to a noun or pronoun and it echoes the current question onto that new item: 我很好,你呢? = "I'm fine, and you?" With no prior question in the air, a bare Noun + 呢 asks "where is it?": 我的书呢? = "where's my book?" Both uses lean on context — 呢 is the particle of "given what we're already talking about, what about this?"
The "what about…?" echo
This is the everyday workhorse use. Someone asks or states something; you reply, then flip the same question back with [topic] + 呢. You don't repeat the verb or the question word — 呢 carries all of it over from context.
——你叫什么名字?——我叫李明,你呢?
— nǐ jiào shénme míngzi — wǒ jiào Lǐ Míng, nǐ ne
'What's your name?' 'I'm Li Ming — and you?' (informal) — 你呢 re-asks the whole name question.
我要一杯咖啡,你呢?
wǒ yào yì bēi kāfēi, nǐ ne
I'll have a coffee — what about you? (informal) — 呢 bounces the order onto the other person.
北京很冷,上海呢?
Běijīng hěn lěng, Shànghǎi ne
Beijing is cold — what about Shanghai? (neutral) — the topic switches from one city to another via 呢.
The "where is…?" 呢
With no preceding question and just a noun phrase, Noun + 呢 means "where is Noun?" It's the sound of looking for something — patting your pockets, scanning the room.
我的手机呢?刚才还在这儿。
wǒ de shǒujī ne, gāngcái hái zài zhèr
Where's my phone? It was right here a second ago. (informal) — bare 手机呢 = 'where's my phone?'
孩子们呢?怎么这么安静?
háizimen ne, zěnme zhème ānjìng
Where are the kids? Why's it so quiet? (informal) — 孩子们呢 asks their whereabouts.
——妈,我的钥匙呢?——在门口。
— mā, wǒ de yàoshi ne — zài ménkǒu
'Mom, where are my keys?' 'By the door.' (informal) — the answer gives a location, confirming 呢 asked 'where'.
Note the economy: 我的手机在哪儿? and 我的手机呢? both ask where the phone is, but the 呢 version is shorter and warmer — the go-to when the thing has just gone missing from a shared context.
呢 softening a wh-question
呢 also attaches to a full question word question to soften it — adding a musing, curious, "so…?/well…?" tone rather than a blunt demand. Unlike 吗, which is banned after a question word, 呢 is perfectly at home there.
你在哪儿呢?我到了。
nǐ zài nǎr ne, wǒ dào le
So where are you? I've arrived. (informal) — 呢 softens 你在哪儿 into a gentler, seeking tone.
这道题到底怎么做呢?
zhè dào tí dàodǐ zěnme zuò ne
So how on earth do you do this problem? (informal) — 呢 adds a pondering mood to the 怎么 question.
| Pattern | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Pronoun/noun + 呢 (after a question) | 你呢? | "and you? / what about you?" |
| Noun + 呢 (no prior question) | 我的书呢? | "where's my book?" |
| Wh-question + 呢 | 你在哪儿呢? | softened "so where are you?" |
呢 has yet more jobs — marking an action in progress (他睡觉呢 "he's sleeping") and other softening roles — which are covered on the progressive and softening 呢 page. Here we've stayed with its question uses.
Common Mistakes
1. Using 吗 for a "what about you?" follow-up. The follow-up particle is 呢, never 吗.
❌ 我很好,你吗?
Incorrect — for 'and you?' use 呢: 我很好,你呢? 你吗 isn't a follow-up.
✅ 我很好,你呢?
wǒ hěn hǎo, nǐ ne
I'm fine, and you? (neutral) — 呢 carries the 'how are you' over to 你.
2. Stacking 呢 and 吗 together. They're different moods; one clause takes one, not both.
❌ 你呢吗?
Incorrect — 呢 and 吗 can't combine. Say 你呢? for a follow-up, or 你好吗? for a yes/no.
✅ 你呢?昨天玩得怎么样?
nǐ ne, zuótiān wán de zěnmeyàng
What about you — how was yesterday? (informal) — 呢 alone does the follow-up.
3. Adding a whole verb where 呢 alone is enough. The point of 呢 is that context supplies the verb; re-saying it is redundant.
❌ 我喝咖啡,你呢喝什么?
Redundant and clumsy — 你呢 already carries 'what will you have'; just say 我喝咖啡,你呢?
✅ 我喝咖啡,你呢?
wǒ hē kāfēi, nǐ ne
I'll have coffee — what about you? (informal) — 呢 alone is complete.
4. Using 在哪儿 when 呢 is the natural 'where is it?' For a missing object in shared context, Noun + 呢 is idiomatic.
❌ 我的伞在哪儿在?
Malformed — to ask where your umbrella is, either 我的伞在哪儿? or, more naturally in context, 我的伞呢?
✅ 我的伞呢?外面下雨了。
wǒ de sǎn ne, wàimiàn xià yǔ le
Where's my umbrella? It's raining outside. (informal) — 伞呢 = 'where's the umbrella?'
Key Takeaways
- [Topic] + 呢 after a question means "and…? / what about…?" — it recycles the whole question onto a new item without repeating a word.
- Noun + 呢 with no prior question asks "where is Noun?" (我的书呢?) — the sound of hunting for something.
- Wh-question + 呢 softens the question into a musing "so…?/well…?" tone — and unlike 吗, 呢 is allowed after a question word.
- 呢 replaces a whole clause via context; don't re-add the verb, and don't reach for 吗.
- 呢 has further progressive and softening uses covered on its own page — these are its core question roles.
