不 vs 没 with a Completed Action (*昨天我不去 → 没去)

You learn 不 (bù) first, as "not," and it works so well — 不好, 不是, 不去 — that it becomes your default for every negative. Then you try to say "I didn't go yesterday" and out comes 昨天我去. Wrong. Even worse, it isn't just unnatural: 我不去 means "I won't go / I refuse to go," a present decision, not a past non-event. Chinese negates a completed or experienced action with 没(有) (méi yǒu), never with 不. "I didn't go" is 我去. The reason isn't tense — Chinese doesn't work in tenses — it's that 没 lives in the world of realized events (did it happen or not?), while 不 lives in the world of habits, plans, and qualities. The full split is at the two-negators overview; this page fixes the specific 不-for-past error.

The error, and the fix

❌ 昨天我不去。

Wrong for 'didn't go' — 不去 means 'I refuse/won't go'; a past non-event takes 没: 昨天我没去。

✅ 昨天我没去,太累了。

zuótiān wǒ méi qù, tài lèi le

I didn't go yesterday, I was too tired. (informal) — 没 negates the realization of 去.

❌ 我不吃饭。

Means 'I don't eat / won't eat' (habit/refusal); for 'I haven't eaten' use 没: 我还没吃饭。

✅ 我还没吃饭,饿死了。

wǒ hái méi chī fàn, è sǐ le

I haven't eaten yet, I'm starving. (informal) — 还没 = 'not yet', the action hasn't been realized.

The dividing line: realized event vs habit/plan/quality

Ask one question: are you saying a specific action did not happen (or hasn't yet), or are you saying something isn't so in general — a habit, an intention, a trait? The first is 没; the second is 不.

Use 不 for…ExampleUse 没 for…Example
habit ("don't as a rule")喝酒completed action ("didn't")喝酒
future / decision明天我experience ("haven't ever")去过
willingness想去existence / 有有钱
quality / adjective(没 can't negate an adjective)

The same verb flips meaning with the two negators — this pair is worth memorising:

我不喝咖啡,喝了睡不着。

wǒ bù hē kāfēi, hē le shuì bu zháo

I don't drink coffee — it keeps me up. (informal) — 不 = a standing habit.

我没喝咖啡,喝的是茶。

wǒ méi hē kāfēi, hē de shì chá

I didn't drink coffee — it was tea. (informal) — 没 = this specific act didn't happen.

💡
One question settles it: "did a particular event fail to happen?" If yes → 没. If you instead mean "as a rule / by choice / by nature it isn't so" → 不. Note 没 is blind to time: 我没去 covers both "I didn't go" and "I haven't gone," because 没 negates the event, and the time word supplies the when. More at choosing 不 vs 没.

The 了 trap: 没 already cancels the completion

Here's the error that survives even after learners master 没. Since the affirmative "I went" is 我去 (with completion 了), they negate it as 我没去. Wrong. 没 negates the realization of the action — so there's no completion left to mark, and the 了 must drop. The negative of 我去了 is simply 我没去.

❌ 我没去了。

Wrong — 没 already cancels the completion; delete 了: 我没去。

✅ 我给他打了电话,可是他没接。

wǒ gěi tā dǎ le diànhuà, kěshì tā méi jiē

I called him, but he didn't pick up. (informal) — 打了 keeps 了 (it happened); 没接 drops it (it didn't).

The one aspect marker that stays under 没 is experiential 过: "I've never been to Beijing" keeps 过 — 我没去北京.

我还没去过北京,一直想去。

wǒ hái méi qù guo Běijīng, yìzhí xiǎng qù

I've never been to Beijing — I've always wanted to go. (informal) — 没…过 keeps 过, drops any 了.

Where 没 can't go: adjectives and modals

The flip side keeps you from over-using 没. Adjectives and modal verbs are negated by 不, and 没 cannot touch them. 没高 and 没会 are ungrammatical.

❌ 我没会游泳。

Wrong — modals take 不: 我不会游泳。

✅ 我不会游泳,也不高。

wǒ bú huì yóuyǒng, yě bù gāo

I can't swim, and I'm not tall either. (informal) — 不会 (modal), 不高 (adjective) — never 没.

(Exception to note: 有 is negated by 没, not 不 — 没有钱, never 不有钱.)

Common Mistakes

1. 不 for a one-time past event. Realized non-events take 没.

✅ 昨天下雨,所以我们没去公园。

zuótiān xià yǔ, suǒyǐ wǒmen méi qù gōngyuán

It rained yesterday, so we didn't go to the park. (neutral) — a specific event that didn't happen.

2. Keeping 了 after 没. Delete it.

✅ 这部电影我没看,不知道好不好。

zhè bù diànyǐng wǒ méi kàn, bù zhīdào hǎo bu hǎo

I haven't seen this film, so I don't know if it's good. (informal) — 没看, no 了.

3. 没 on an intention or refusal. A choice about the future is 不.

✅ 我今天不想出门。

wǒ jīntiān bù xiǎng chūmén

I don't feel like going out today. (informal) — willingness → 不, not 没.

Key Takeaways

  • A completed or experienced action is negated with 没(有), never 不: 昨天我没去, not 不去.
  • The split isn't tense — it's realized event (没) vs habit / plan / willingness / quality (不).
  • Under 没, the completion 了 drops: the negative of 我去了 is 我没去, never 我没去了.
  • Experiential 过 stays under 没: 我没去过北京.
  • owns adjectives and modals (不高, 不会), where 没 can't appear; but 有 is negated by 没 (没有钱).

  • Two Negators: 不 (bù) vs 没 (méi)HSK 1Mandarin has exactly two everyday negators. 不 (bù) negates the habitual, willed, future, and all adjectives and modal verbs; 没(有) (méi yǒu) negates the verb 有 and any completed or experienced action. The split is NOT about tense — it's habit/intention/quality (不) vs completion/existence (没).
  • 不 vs 没 — Two NegatorsHSK 1Mandarin's two negators split by ONE question: did the event already fail to happen, or not? 没(有) (méi) negates a completed/experienced action and the verb 有 — 'didn't, haven't, don't have.' 不 (bù) negates everything else — habits, plans, willingness, qualities, and modals ('don't, won't, isn't'). It is NOT a past-vs-present split; it's realized-non-event (没) vs general/intended (不).
  • Using 了 as a Past Tense (*我昨天是学生了)HSK 2Told that 了 (le) 'signals completion', learners stamp it on every past sentence — 我昨天是学生了 for 'I was a student yesterday'. But 了 marks completion or change of state, not tense: states and habits take no 了, so the right form is 我以前是学生.
